22. Marfaen - AC up to 16 because of Mage Armor; 21. Graxx, Neya, Rag; 20. Lightning; 18. Surruk, Buhrell; 16.Will-o'-Wisp#1, Will-o'-Wisp#2 (cumulative damage: 14); 08. Drazzim; 06. Andmarir; 03. Utar.
Marfaen: With Rag's help, you are able to finally conjure a ball of energy of your own. However, as you launch it, the sphere of coldness passes a few inches away from the Will-o'-Wisp... If only it stay put.
(OOC @Grx: Graxx is a strong fellow, he can certainly carry both of the weapons for 15 feet. It won't require an action either).
Graxx picks up both of the intended weapons and helps arm his dwarf companion. Almost at the same time as the glaive hits the floor, Graxx's Moon-touched Sword, Greatsword swipes at the Will-o'-Wisp with fantastic speed. Surprisingly, the floating ball of light seems to react even faster, and it moves out of harm's way.
Rag will continue to take advantage of the fact that the enemy is engaged with his companions and that he is currently unseen by the Wisp.
-> Shortbow (ranged weapon attack with advantage and Sneak Attack) vs. Will of Wisp#2: Attack: 15 Damage: 12 piercing.
-> Although he was sure this was going to hit, the halfling's arrow travels past the target and out through a broken window. Rag will then move to the next table over, and attempt to hide with the help of both his magical cloak and cover from the furniture (giving him advantage on the check. Stealth: 24).
Neya prepares both the magical fang and the safflower necklace and bravely approaches Andmarir and the crackling blue energy. The monk braces herself for impact (Neya takes 3 lightning damage from grabbing the magic fang).
Lightning: The lightning leaves Andmarir and flies towards Neya. It hits the flowers first, but to Neya's surprise she feels no pain. Initially concentrated on the flowers, the lightning begins to get pulled by the fang. It whirls around it a few times, and then gets drawn into the tooth, vibrating wildly in the monk's hand. It would appear that the Lightning has been trapped with a combination of the right lure, the appropriate vessel, and a sprinkle of proximity to the danger area..
Surruk: The scout is focused on attacking the Will-o'-Wisp. She ponders using the glaive that Graxx just brought closer to them, but decides against it as she would have no idea how to work such an unwieldy weapon:
-> Pole of Angling (improvised melee weapon attack) vs Will-o'-Wisp#2: Attack: 13 Damage: 3 bludgeoning.
-> She clumsily misses her swing.
Buhrell: Getting a hint from Neya, the half-orc rushes back towards the bar, grabs a large mason jar (including a glass lid) and dashes towards the monk while opening the jar and kicking chairs and tables out of the way.
Will-o'-Wisp: Its light flickering a bit, the spirit will once again become invisible and reappear a few feet away, this time atop Drazzim's brawling partner. The unconscious rat-looking halfling has no idea what is about to hit him.
Rat-looking halfling's CON saving throw: 16.
-> The Will-o'-Wisp seems to be struggling to consume the rat-looking halfling's life.
UPDATED MAP (Buhrell is the pink mo-hawk circular token next to Neya)
(Drazzim, Andmarir, and Utar are up next. Marfaen, Graxx, Neya, and Rag can also post for the next round).
Andmarir feels the lightning leave him and is relieved that he is still breathing. Now that the lightning got caught in the tooth, he focuses back to shooting the white glow ball.
To hit 27
Damage 7
Will only shoot if the ball is above not in the rat looking fellow.
Utar looks to the Will'o whisp and points his warhammer at it, his other hand reaching for his amulet. Invoking Torm, he casts command, his voice booming, louder and deeper than normal. "HALT."
DC 12 wisdom check for the wisp. If it fails it spends it's turn holding still but still floating.
"Oh no you don't" Drazzim says, launching himself from the chair over towards the will-o'-wisp. He swings with a horizontal strike, so it he misses he doesn't have a chance of catching the unconscious ratfolk.
Greataxe vs. Will-o'-Wisp:11 vs. AC. Hit:14 slashing damage.
Marfaen can sense that his best chance there was to use the last resorts of magic he had ready, and hope he could end that there, so he takes the diamond again, and repeats the casting of Chromatic Orb, this time the light coming out of it is more red in color, and has the Fire damage type.
As he finishes it, he hurls the sphere of energy across the room to hit the spirit that was haunting the Tea Kettle.
(OOC: She's having a hard time with her bow in this encounter, isn't she...?)
(OOC: Marfaen, on the other hand, is having a blast. Seriously, look at those rolls, I'm going crazy over them, because it's the best sequence of rolls I had so far in my entire career playing DnD. Because I'm not very experienced, if it was hard to tell.)
Drazzim swings his ax once more but is perhaps a bit too cautious not to hit the unconscious halfling brawler. He misses both targets.
Andmarir waits for the foul glowing ball to dodge Drazzim's attack to release his arrow. The tactic works, and the arrow passes right through the middle of the Will-o'-Wisp's essence (cumulative damage to Will-o'-Wisp#2: 17).
Utar: The cleric utters his Command in a grave tone, but sees no reaction from the spirit. Initially baffled, Utar remembers that he has seen this sort of complete ignoring of this spell before. The half-orc is able to then conclude that the enemy is either an undead creature, is not able to understand Common, or it would somehow take damage simply from not being able to temporarily move. One or more of these factors must be true!
22. Marfaen - AC up to 16 because of Mage Armor; 21. Graxx, Neya, Rag - Rag is hidden from view from everyone else at the moment; 20. Lightning; 18. Surruk, Buhrell; 16. Will-o'-Wisp#1, Will-o'-Wisp#2 (cumulative damage: 17); 08. Drazzim; 06. Andmarir; 03. Utar.
(OOC: I did some research on this and there are people on both sides of the argument. I however, am finding it hard to convince myself that the swing of a Moon-touched Sword, can be considered a 'magical attack' just because the weapon shines a bit. I'm open for a discussion if anyone would like to make a case).
Graxx swings his bright weapon with characteristic recklessness, and Lightbreaker is finally able to taste some combat. Unlike that of the barbarian's weapon of choice, the Will-o'Wisp's light in now quite faint (cumulative damage to Will-o'-Wisp#2: 21).
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Neya places the electrified fang in the jar, but not before feeling another slight jolt from the enigmatic item (she takes an additional 4 lightning damage). Buhrell will use her reaction to close the glass lid tightly and even tie some twine around the sealed jar (good thing she carries some!) As far as you can tell, the dangerous item is now secured.
(OOC @Pertuie: Now that's a critical roll!)
Marfaen: The crimson-orange sphere flies towards the Will-o'-Wisp as if it had a will of its own and completely overtakes. For a moment, it looks like the magical sphere has replaced the spiritual one atop the rat-looking halfling's unconscious body. If energy could catch on fire, this is what it would look like. The flames lick the air around it. Reds and oranges and yellows mix quickly in mid-air with a slight hint of greenish-blue. The enemy's flickering light can still be momentarily seen from within the fire sphere. The temperature around the immediate surrounding gets warm quickly. It almost feels cozy for a moment. Then, the sphere is suddenly gone, and so is the Will-o'-Wisp (cumulative damage to Will-o'-Wisp#2: 37->DEFEATED).
Graxx looks around the room at the dead bodies. Specifically those whom he knocked unconscious. The normally merry Babarbarian is anything but. He drops Lightbreaker to the ground and collapses down into a chair. He runs his fingers through his black hair.
”They didn’t need to die... I was just having a bit of fun and teaching them some respect. I killed them...”
The barbarian remains sitting staring at the bodies.
Neya looks around and mentally counts the dead, while shaking her arms and deciding that she's not going to be a fan of electricity for a long time.
" 'It is in bitter failure that we learn our most valuable lessons.' My teacher said that once, but never went into detail of what it meant. I see now that was intentional. It is impossible to accurately describe tragedy like this. I count six dead... We will carry these deaths with us for the rest of our lives. But let's not let that give us a reason to despair, Graxx. Instead, let it give us motivation to do better... For them, for us."
She heaves a heavy sigh. "Still doesn't make things any easier, though..."
"Want a drink...? I actually think I may need one, myself."
Andmarir sees that the electricity is captured. Sees that the bright glow ball is finally dead. Looking around at the bodies, he sighs but then slumps to the floor, laying on his back and breathing in deeply.
Still in pain, he closes his eyes and then just lays there. Smoking a bit here and there from where the electricity hit him.
" I really hope that is the things we were to look for. "
Drazzim takes a few deep breaths, not used to having to run to and fro through a tavern unless he's in dire need of a tankard refill. He stows the greataxe onto his back again, then goes to collect his handaxes to place on his belt.
He looks to the casualties around the room, shaking his head. "Those lights... They shouldn't've been here." He comments, going over to the first one and picking them up to place on an open table.
"You are right... I feel like I have forgotten my teachings but I will not forget this. I need to get back to that. A drink sounds nice."
Graxx will reach over to his or the closest surrounding table that has a former Patron's half finished beverage and begins to drink. Graxx remains sitting and is still shaken but seems to have his spirits lifted slightly.
Stowing his warhammer, Utar will meander through The Tea Kettle. "Dragon fang, undead creatures. Something stinks in Phlan."
As he comes to a body, Utar gently closes their eyes and saying a blessing to Torm, asking for guiadance for their souls. As he comes to the end of his ministrations, he will stoop to pick up his thrown handaxe, tucking it into the back of his belt.
He looks over to Buhrell, "What light can you shed on this?"
Rag will quickly go to Marfean, probably startling them and reach his hand out(obviously looking for the diamond to be returned) (if no response he will say "Diamond ... Diamond")
He seems to caress it in his hands looking at it for way to long and then coming out the it, he puts it back in it's pouch and hides it back under his cloak.
