Your party heads back to the surface, after picking up the two unconscious prisoners from the last room. (OOC: I almost forgot about them.)
When you get to the surface, Bommie's and Murphy's groups look battered and tired. Their tunnels led to a horde of zombies and quite a few ogres. They have been put down, but it was unpleasant fighting to deal with them. With the number of ogres in the area diminished, the lands between Nunkreet and Greensville should be safe from those meat tanks for some time. They are concerned that there is a corpse flower lurking somewhere, but the Iron Gate will try to hunt it down.
When you relate what happened in your passageway, Bommie looks concerned at the two prisoners, especially after Jack mentioned the red slaad tried to infect him with its claws. She asks Reverie to use her Lay-Hands ability to cure disease on the prisoners. Bommie relaxes after they are cured. She wasn't sure how long they were infected, and in several weeks, a young red slaad would have burst out of their chests! (Cure disease takes care of the "tadpole".) The Watchful Guild will nurse the two of them back to health.
Bommie leads your group back to their compound (which is still being repaired). With a few more days of training, you will all be 5th level (post #2744), and better able to deal with the evil opposing you.
For the books... The church of Oghma specialize in knowledge, which is useful for all organizations. She will check, but she suspects these books were stolen (by the devils of Bane) and used to buy zombies (from the minions of Talona) for the attack on the compound. That cambrion used up a lot of resources to try to hunt your group down... "You all have asked me questions that I was not able to answer. But these Oghma clerics specialize in knowledge. They may have what you are looking for. But they always charge a steep price for their answers." (Gestures at the books.) "We'll put the books into my safe while you are training. But when you visit Nunkreet, you should go into their church with these books and obtain a ransom for their return."

It is now the 12th of Winter Firstmoon, 212 ADC. The previous 4 days were spent in training. In particular, Reverie is getting used to moving in her new armor, Jack is blowing up straw dummies with his boom-erang, and Froskan is figuring out new spell uses with his necklace.
After a hearty breakfast, Bommie greets you by the (repaired) gates, to say farewell. "You've gained enough strength that those Bane devils will think twice about getting revenge... but I wouldn't let down your guard. If you haven't changed your minds, I'm guessing you will be entering Nunkreet now? My guild doesn't enter the city, but Murphy and Nature's Wrath" (she rolls her eyes) "have put in a good word with the Iron Gate guild if you need allies in the city."
Bommie hands you a scroll, along with the Oghma books. "The Oghma messenger confirms that the books were stolen, but stayed tight lipped on what was inside. They wanted them returned immediately, but I repeated their own words back at them: there is always a price for knowledge. No matter how much they want you to give it back, you are entitled to some info since you shed blood in recovering them... The scroll is to note that you are the temporary legal guardians. (Don't want someone to accuse your group of stealing them.)
"When you are out of the city again, don't be strangers. Good fortune in your travels."
(If you have other questions, ask them now. If you have decided NOT to go to Nunkreet, I would need to know that too; otherwise I'll head you to the North Gate. Reminder that there is a simple map of the city in post 618, the middle "spoiler".)

Isk packs up his possessions, such as they are and prepares for the journey to Nunkreet. He mulls over the events of the past couple weeks, the gap in his memory, and his time warring in the east, which seems like a lifetime ago. He hopes the answers to his questions are indeed in Nunkreet, as Tim the Hermit told him. Perhaps the clerics of Oghma might have a few...
Your party follows that road south, and after an hour arrive at the North Gate. The wall around the city is 10' high, but you can see a number of buildings deeper in the city that are taller than that, as well as the High Castle on a fortified hill almost half a mile south. The gate arch is 20' high, and has a pair of 20' wide massive doors, which are wide open. A line of people waiting to enter the city has already queued up. (A smaller line of people exiting town are using this gate as well.)
After 30 minutes of waiting in line, your group is taken to one of several guard shacks just inside the gate wall. Inside the shack are two scruffy looking soldiers wearing chain and leather armor inside. One is at a desk. The other is leaning against a wall, helm down over his eyes (apparently sleeping).
The guard at the desk looks over your ID papers, and asks basic questions (are you carrying anything dangerous? are you here for business or personal reasons? etc.) He spends some time studying your group, then states: "First time visitors to the city pay the first-time entrance fee. Two gold per person." (counts on his fingers) "That is 10 total for your party."

Isk feels that something is off. Most of what the guard did was by rote, staying on script with a routine done hundreds of times. But this last bit with the fees had some hesitation, as the guard had to decide what to say.
Jack notices that Isk is suspicious of something, and takes a closer look at the other guard standing by the wall. (Jack has 15 passive Insight.) That guard is faking being asleep. Jack sees that the guard is in front of a large sign on the wall.
