(This will be over quickly, one way or the other. Theater of the mind for this. The creature is 10 feet from Beegred and a few of the others. Derendil is watching the other direction across from the party, so he's 35 feet away. Everyone but Beegred and Derendil are sleeping. It will take one turn to wake up, get your bearings and stand/move.)
As the fungi raises four stalks from the cave floor, stones tumble away from it alerting Derendil. Turning to the sound, it sees this fungus moving and in alarm he shouts a warning in undercommon, "It's a violet!"
Narstin is the first to wake from he warning. Leaping to his feet, he looks around for a threat just in time to see the waving stalks about to lash out at Beegred.
Beegred, busy lightly slapping his own face to wake up, whips around at Derendil's incomprehensible words. But the intent becomes clear when he sees the fungus cocking several stalks back to lash out.
Beegred screams like a preteen schoolgirl. But then he mans up (halflings up??), scrambles over to the violet fungi, and attacks with his short sword.

Both of Beegred's slashes sink deep into the mushroom and slice cleanly, leaving the cap and the stalks barely attached to the trunk. The roots of the fungus can be seen peeling away from the cavern floor, the fungus almost teetering over from the blows.
Beegred's scream wakes everyone up. Krizzibond, Rodolfo and the other party members jump awake, grabbing for weapons and scanning for dangers. As each of them figure out the fungus appears to be the cause of the panic, 2 of the stalks lash out towards Beegred...
The descending holy flame hits the nearly decapitated fungus with enough ferocity to burn away the stalks and knock it over. As it falls, the roots peel away from the cavern floor to reveal the decomposed remains of a creature it grew out of.
Derendil rushes over from his watch position and gives the fungus corpse a couple more good slashes with his claws for good measure. Speaking once again in elvish, "A violet fungus. Known by most underdark denizens, they are still hard to differentiate from other fungus. By the time you can be sure, you're in danger of the feelers. Anything it touches rots and they grow on corpses. Beegred was fortunate he only got touched lightly the one time."
The party finishes their long rest, picks up their gear and set out. Jimjar trails behind and catches up after a few minutes, happily flipping and catching a coin.
The cavern narrows such that the party has to progress single file, but the march is uneventful and plenty of food is found. The long rest is also uneventful but Narstin and Eldeth can hear Sarith, Tozer and Xilyrah muttering in their sleep during their shifts. Occasional words can be understood, "... bride... joy...rejoice...grove...seeder...she..."
The next day (day 28), the party travels in a wide open cavern once again. The party notices the entirety of the cavern is covered in thin lichens and the ground is spongy with detritus. Mushrooms and other fungi grow in profusion compared to the caves you have become used to traversing. The party is definitely entering a different kind of 'biome'.
The next long rest is also peaceful. Only the restlessness of Sarith, Tozer and Xilyrah and the all too familiar nightmares disrupt what would be a refreshing rest.
The next day, Tozer and Xilyrah look ill and keep to themselves. They are becoming about as useful or social as Sarith, which is to say, not very much.
Rodolfo asks the more lively members of the party, "Does it pass? Were they so depressed when you first met? Seems like this environment is taking a toll on everyone, but some take it much worse than the others."
Narstin nods along. "Sarith was the first. Now these two are showing similar signs. So far, there's been no indication it passes. It's worrying that three people have been similarly affected now..."
Concerned but still feeling the need to move on, the party continues to move onward, easily herding the three with the promise of 'Neverlight Grove'. The biome continues to change as the lichens and fungus become more pestiferous. The bio luminescence becomes brighter and brighter as you progress. Other than the flora the area seems to be completely abandoned and there are no threats during your travel or during your rest.
The flora continues to thicken and your path takes you down a very tall winding fissure only wide enough to march through single file. As you make your way forward, out of the darkness above, a winged shape skitters down using the opposite walls for foot and hand holds. You all see a black vulture-like humanoid with red glowing eyes as it attacks Wolena and Stool from above.

Where the one stalk touches Beegred, his flesh rots on contact.
(Narstin and Derendil are tied for initiative. I will let Narstin act first as Derendil was 35 feet away.)
Narstin instinctively lashes out with a sacred flame at the fungus as he takes in the scene.

"Huh....wha? what was that?" Krizz says half asleep still having missed all the action.

Narstin shakes his head and translates.
Narstin walks over to Beegred and lays a hand on his shoulder to cast Cure Wounds, healing him for 14. "Are we ready to keep moving?" he asks.
