Drusk (the half-orc at the table): "You owe nothing... this round of drinks. As long as you pitch in for the next pitcher of wine. Or sah-kay, if we run out of that first.
"Sharing drinks with good company is one of the goddess Lliira's blessings."

Hildigrim watches Mrs. Brinarei perform her "parlor tricks" with rapt attention, his eyes bright and his lips slightly parted. He looks at the book intently. (What language is it written in?)
"I would love to hear all of your stories!" the halfling exclaims. "Did you fight dragons? I met a sailor once who was on a ship that was attacked by a giant turtle. Well, not so much attacked as it wanted payment for passage ... and it let them pass when they gave it some gold," he ends quickly, trying to de-emphasize the unexciting reality. "And I know that's not a dragon, but it's pretty close," he smiles. Hildi produces a dagger and flips it in his palm. "Fort — my brother — my twin brother — always chastised me for skulking about and getting into others' business. He would step on my feet when he thought I was snooping. Well, now I'm really good at it." He turns to look back at Drusk and Jorin. "I'm hoping my new friends will take me on an adventure. I have a keen eye, and my skills with a bow are improving." The dagger disappears behind his back, and he looks up at the tiefling pleasantly. "So, have you ever fought a dragon?"
All of a sudden, the outside door flies open, as if slammed by a tremendous wind, though the snow outside seems to have stopped. A moment later, a tall, thin tiefling woman bursts in. The infernal heritage is strong in her, red skin, two large red horns curling from her head, a red forked tail curling out from under her heavy skirts, red eyes that are glowing now. She is dressed in simple clothes, with a heavy wrap. She stares wildly about the place, and says loudly, "You should all be ashamed! Scaring a woman what's done nothing to you! I put up with your looks and your lies, but now you've driven me from my home!?"
She stands there a moment, taking in the shocked silence of the room, the cold air swirling in behind her. Many of the locals are not meeting her gaze.
Finally, though it surely took only a few seconds, Wan Bai storms up, slamming the door shut and confronting her. "What do you go on about, Criella!"
"I need a room tonight, I dare not go back. Give me a room, Wan Bai."
"There is no room left, I have given the last to these travelers," she waves in the general direction of Vanja and the boys. "You need to go home and stop making a scene. You are scaring children!" Sure enough, the few children in the room are hiding behind their mother's skirts.
Seemingly deflated, Criella droops, and her eyes stop glowing. "I cannot... I cannot go back, Wan Bai. I am afraid for my life. I just need a place for the night."
Wan Bai shakes her head. "There are no rooms, you cannot stay here. Just go home."
Criella looks up, desperation on her face. "I cannot! Is there no one who will help me?"

Hildigrim says to Mrs. Brinarei in an undertone, "Do you know her? I mean, I don't mean to insinuate that just because you're both tieflings that you should be acquainted. I just mean I'm not sure if you're from around here, because it sounds like she's local. 'Are you local?' is really what I'm asking."
Jorin raises his glass with the rest for a hearty klink before taking a deep draft of it. "Different, eh? You are in good company then, my new friend. A half-orc raised by elves and a human raised by dwaves, you are sitting at a table full of different. If there is one thing i have learned while on K'harn, it is that different is exactly what makes life worth living."
**Present**
At the sound of the crashing door, Jorin's back snaps up straight and hands immediately go for the grips of his axes. As she starts cursing the patrons, he relaxes but leaves one hand resting on the granite pommel of an axe. As the exchange between Wan Bia and Criella plays out, Jorin scans the room for patron reactions. Insight: 17
Jorin calls out to Criella, "Good evening, Criella " in a strong voice that carries over the din of the room before continuing at a more normal volume, "Come, sit with us. We have space at our table and drink enough to share." He beckons her over with a wave of his hand.
Vanja looks up in alarm when the door flies open, and she pays rapt attention when the tiefling woman makes her claim of apparently being tormented by the other locals somehow. She considers speaking up when the women asks if anyone can help her, but Jorin speaks up first, so she holds her tongue and waits to see what happens.
Mrs Brinarei, focus immediately turns to Teifling in need. She watches the exchange between Criella and Wan Bai. She looks at Hildigrim with a slight annoyance at his presumptuous comment.
"No young man I do not know her, but I know all to well what she may be going through. Excuse me a moment." Mrs Brinarei shuffles towards Criella. Her book and wine lift of the table and follow closely behind her. Mortimer the fat, gray cat looks judgmentally at Hildigrim for a moment then silently jumps off the table and follows its master.
Criella turns to Jorin's offer, but not easily. You can tell she is not trusting. She makes her way towards your table, as Wan Bai huffs, "Fine, I've food and drink if one of you is paying, but there's no room for her to sleep." She heads to the kitchen.
Criella makes it almost to the table with a tentative smile when she notices the elderly Tiefling stand and come towards the group. There are audible gasps from the people in the inn, at either a second Tiefling (they just aren't very observant) or the floating book, or both. Criella stands there, confused, unsure, and waits.

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Hildigrim, taking the two looks of annoyance in stride, follows behind Mrs. Brinarei, walking in her footsteps and peering around her legs at Criella. As they approach, he scrutinizes the new tiefling, trying to read her.
"That is quite alright Wan Bai, thank you for your hospitality," Jorin says before looking at Vanja and raising an eye brow, "As I said, a table of different." He gives a soft smile to the elderly Teifling before saying, "Both of you are welcome to join us." extending the offer to Mrs Brinarei as well.
With that, he'll hop up from the table and go get an empty chair, or two if needed, from another table in the room and pull it up to our table.
Hildigrim frowns at his inability to get a good read on Criella, but at Jorin's invitation, the halfling hops forward and motions toward the elderly tiefling with a big smile. "May I introduce Mrs. Brinarei and her feline companion, Mortimer." He motions toward the table. "Mrs. Brinarei, my friends Jorin and Drusk. Mrs. Brinarei is an ex-adventurer whose husband died, and now she's studying the arcane." He looks at Vanja. "I'm sorry, but I don't believe we've been introduced. I'm Hildigrim Goodbody. And who might you be?"
Vanja gives the halfling a nervous smile before quickly shaking her head and extending her hand to him.
"Vanja," she introduces herself quickly. "Vanja Xorhaus. A pleasure to meet you," she adds sincerely.
She then turns her attention to Criella.
"Umm...I don't know if there might be some other reason the innkeeper doesn't want you staying here, but I've only just rented my room for the night and I'm the only one staying there right now, so...I could easily make room for you, if needed."
Mrs Brinarei walks straight towards the Teifling ignoring the gasps of the rest of the patrons.
"Oh darling what troubles you?" She says as she moves her hand slightly and casts Mage Hand. A, elegant female spectral hand appears and pulls the sweater from Mrs. Brinarei's shoulders and moves it over to the shoulders of the distressed Teifling then disappears. Mrs. Brinarei reaches out an wipes a tear from Criella's cheek then slowly grabs her hand. She gives Criella some of her weight as she leads her towards the table of inviting adventures.
"Thank you young man" She nods at Jorin as she steps in front of the chairs he got for them.
"Thank you," Vanja replies with a sincere smile as she accepts both the meal and the direction. "The warmth and the service are both appreciated."
Turning to the table with the (presently) two strangers, she gives them a smile as well.
"Well, I'm much obliged for you all making space for me. To what do I owe the pleasure?"
Drusk (the half-orc at the table): "You owe nothing... this round of drinks. As long as you pitch in for the next pitcher of wine. Or sah-kay, if we run out of that first.

Vanja visibly perks up at the mention of Lliira.
"Oh? A follower of the Joybringer, are we? Well, this certainly is a pleasure then."
As she takes her seat, she lifts the offered glass.
"A toast then? To Our Lady of Joy and a night of new friends?"
(clinks cups for the toast)
