Respar plans on circulating among the tables, just being pleasant, introducing himself and his sister, hoping to make inroads with people of important, especially those that might offer contracts for potions and such. He might even flirt harmlessly with some of the women from the Keep. He also keeps his eyes and ears peeled for anyone paying more attention than warranted.
Annaryth does her best to fit in with the crowd. She looks in particular for any officers from the keep or the friendly guard from her previous encounter.
Martha hands out samples of all her potions to anyone who is willing to partake at the feast. She breaks up the Rager's Aid, the Poison Ward Salve, and the Fortifying Brew all into small samples as she hands them out with a smile. During the feast, there are surely many who would be discussing what happened regarding Master Caldwin. She will chime in that she was shocked and saddened to hear about that.
During the merrymaking, she asks about Captain Eddarly and what type of person he is, fishing for any information on him. She doesn't like the fact that he is watching them and searches for any weakness or other such information on the man.
Most of the town eventually filters in, crowding into the spaces before and behind the Inn when the regular room overflows. A good number of watchmen are here as well, including two captains. Young Captain Varning, whom Annaryth spotted returning from patrol the day before, is making merry, enjoying the occasion and the company. Captain Barhold, whom you hear others refer to as "Iron Sam" proves to be a gruff and sternfaced middle aged man. He mostly seems to be here to trade good humored insults with his brother the innkeeper.
Easily the most popular man here, Father Donnagin is a perpetually smiling soft faced fellow who seems to be friends with just about everyone. Among other things, he seems to be an author, as more than one person asks about when his next book will be finished. It isn't long before he seeks out the new faces in the crowd, approaching Respar first along with whomever is with him, "What a wondrous celebration of life. I am given to understand that we have you to thank for this gathering. Welcome to Aldencross, I am Father Donnagin."
Meanwhile, Martha asks around about Captain Eddarly. Alicia gives out a hearty laugh in response. "Oh, he's snagged another one. He's only the most eligible bachelor around, I've lost count of the young women hoping to convince him to settle down. All I can say there is good luck, he hasn't picked anyone that I know of. He's a kind enough man, and dutiful, but he seems a bit distracted. I figure someone needs to just haul him to the alter and get it over with. He may not figure out what's going on for a while, but I'm sure he'll be glad when he does."
Respar notices that the cadet who had been with Eddarly yesterday is here tonight and keeping an eye on you. He's fidgeting, clearly wanting to join in on the festivities rather than watch your group.
Reminder since I think I've only mentioned her once, Alicia is the Inkeeper's wife.
Annaryth smiles as she notices Captain Varning. She waits for a chance and moves to speak with him. " Good evening sir. It is good to see you again under better circumstances. I bet that your work is very dangerous. I couldn't go out on patrol like you do. Just the thought of some of the hideous creatures here....." She shudders at this. " You must be very brave. "
Respar smiles and bows his head briefly. "Thank you, Father. It's our pleasure." He pauses before saying, "But I have to admit there is, shall we call it, 'enlightened self-interest'? We are trying to ingratiate ourselves with the people here, and we only bought the beast. Someone else brought it down, and our host cooked it. But we'll take what credit we can. Have you tried it yet? It's quite delicious!"
Martha plays along with Alicia and blushes, then stammers out a response, "Oh...no, no, I was just asking...but, well, what type does he like? Why do you think he seems so distracted? He does seem very kind..."
Captain Varning blinks at Annaryth for a moment before recognition dawns. "It is less dangerous than you might think miss. There were some bandits in the area about half a year ago, but after driving them off things have been quiet. In fact, things are so peaceful we've cut back to only one patrol a week. Its relaxing to tell you the truth."
---
Father Donnagin smiles and waves a hand dismissively, "So you're promoting a new business, so you had help. Does any of that negate the decision to share this bounty? This is a good thing for the people here, I can only hope that you'll spark more nights like this one way or another."
---
Alicia tilts her head, "Well, truth be told I honestly don't know if he has a particular type. You could always try calling on him at home. He has a small house in town, spends several nights of the week there rather than his quarters at the fort. I don't know his schedule well enough to predict when he'll be there, but if you keep trying..." She shrugs, "All I can say is good luck."
Smiling inside she looks him over. "I am glad to hear that Captain. I much prefer safe areas to chaos. Knowing that you are out there keeping me safe makes me feel much better. I havent seen much of the area since arriving with my employer. Would it be possible for me to come along on a patrol with you? I will stay out of the way. " She smiles at him.
Respar nods in agreement. "I also hope we can help everyone enjoy themselves often. Now, please, I should continue to mingle. Um, is there anyone you recommend I speak with to befriend, or avoid?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Eya asks for the location of his home and ponders the fact that he chooses to spend time away from the fort instead of just sleeping there. She will gather both Kiven and Respar and let them know that he sometimes chooses to sleep in the home in town.
"I suggest we do some scouting first and spy on him. Maybe we learn something. We could go at night, invisible," Eya suggests.
Captain Varning looks surprised at the request, "It may be safe enough madame, but this is no stroll through the countryside. We ride hard and fast to cover the assigned territory swiftly, and our camps are functional but low on comforts. Begging your pardon madame, but I do not know of many women who would be able to keep up, much less enjoy the experience." His face seems to belie some curiosity as to whether this would deter Annaryth.
---
Father Donnagin clasps a friendly hand over Respar's shoulder, "Well now, that's a good question." He points at a tall and lanky young man, perhaps 25 years of age. "That's Gendry Fritter, second eldest of the Fritter boys. Old Mrs Fritter, the poor woman, had eight sons in a row, and they have always been a handful and a half. But those lads know these lands better than anyone, they've spent their whole lives scouring the hills and waterline. Half the time trouble shows up, the good Captain Varning knows just where to look thanks to them. Now, I don't know where Master Caldwin got all of his supplies, may Mitra have mercy on his soul, but if your alchemy calls for something that can be found in this area at all, the Fritters probably at the least have a good idea where to look."
Respar thanks the good father for his words, then when speaking with his sister and her 'apprentice,' mentiosn about how the Fritter lads might know where to find unusual ingredients. As for Eddarly, he watches to see if the Captain drinks a bit too much. "Best to do this when he is either not in, or fast asleep..."
Annaryth grins at this. " I can keep up with the pace i think. Once i commit to something i always see it to the end. I have ridden a horse a time or two you might say. While i may look fragile i assure you that looks are often deceiving. All i ask is to be given the chance to prove myself. " She smiles up at him.
The captain looks thoughtful, then shrugs, "It would be nice to have a new face out on the road. If you're sure, meet us outside of the fort an hour after dawn on Wealday. I'll pack an extra officer's tent for you, but make sure to bring whatever else you require. Do you have a horse? A good one I mean, a farm nag won't be able to keep up."
---
The party drags on into the night, with people slowly filtering off. The townsfolk seem to be impressed with the potion samples handed out, and in high spirits in general concerning the get together. You do catch some muttering about whether alchemists can be trusted at all given what happened with the last one, but its mostly drowned out.
---
Afterwards, the group poke around Captain Eddarly's place. There's no light inside, but a few faint whisps of smoke curl up from the chimney. It looks like the captain is indeed home right now.
Annaryth grins at the captain. " Thank you for this chance This will be so exciting. I will be there Captain. As to a horse...I'm sorry I have no horse. Would you possibly have an extra horse i can ride? " She laughs inside knowing that she can ride circles around these border guards.
Annaryth is actually excited to go. Hanging around a town pretending to be a shop assistant isn't really to her liking. Riding with soldiers to explore the land is a different story though... Not to mention that the captain isn't unattractive.
The captain scratches his head, "Well, that's a bit of a stretch, but I think I can swing it for you. There are plenty of horses that could use more exercise than they've been getting lately. Just, ah, if Iron Sam asks you about it, deny everything. I'd never hear the end of it otherwise, the old codger's a stickler for protocol."
Annaryth grins at him. " Thank you so much. I promise that i wont be a burden. If anyone asks about the horse I will reveal nothing. " After discussing the meeting place and time she will excuse herself and mingle with the crowd.
Kiven had avoided the party for the most part in favor of some reading and other mundane tasks, but meets up with the others and is willing to go to Captain Eddarly's place with Respar, Eya and perhaps Jesla. He's a bit unsure of their goal but casts invisibility on himself nonetheless and sneaks up close to the house, hiding in the shadows. He listens for any movement or voices inside and peers into a few windows to see if anything catches his eye.
Upon realizing Eddarly is home, Respar says, "We should not enter. Maybe watch to see if he has any companions for the evening. If he has more than one on the line, maybe we can use their jealousy...I'll stay an hour or two before turning in for the night."
