The rest of Lif's story about bowling with troll skulls has made me fonder of the name Trollskull Manor. I wouldn't mind keeping the name, unless someone else has a new name in mind. I hope we can befriend more ghosts, especially the tressym.
I want to order a four-poster bed for my bedroom, and four nice cushy armchairs so we can relax around the fireplace in the den. How much would those cost?
Adrasteia would have to buy a map, but being the studious lady she is, she certainly knows a shop or two where to find them. Also, each of your shares of the art sale equals 350 gold pieces, as mentioned in the previous post.
You guys are all rested up now and it is the next morning. It is early, about an hour or so past dawn. Lif has prepared "breakfast" for you, as requested. The broken plates are completely empty, but Lif is still charging you 5 silver pieces each.
NOTE: Purchases for the house can be done out-of-character. Just tell me what you are looking for and if it is nothing too outrageous I'll ask you to deduct an amount of gold from your wallet. We can then assume you bought it, they delivered and installed it in a few days, and poof... it appears in the house. Fantasy Amazon/Ikea (pre-assembled, of course)! This only applies to items for the house, including repairs, hiring employees, etc. It does not apply to items you want to buy for yourselves, like the weapons and maps Adrasteia mentioned, for instance. Those need to be purchased in-character, and you may or may not find them depending on what you are looking for.
Sim: You can get your made-to-order bed for 10 gold pieces. The armchairs will go for 6 gold pieces each. Please deduct a total of 34 gold pieces from your wallet.
Adrasteia: You can get the same custom-made bed for 10 gold pieces as well, or you can get a more standard design for 8 gold pieces, up to you. What other furnishings would you like?
The map you can purchase from a cartographer or a general adventuring goods store. We'll get to that once you guys are ready to go buy weapon upgrades like you've been saying.
Buying food wholesale for the house will cost 1 gold piece per character per day. You won't need to buy rations for trip this way, as you can always get food from he house to take it with you. Lif will take care of the food purchased.
LORE BOX (THE CITY'S SPLENDORS: THE WALKING STATUES - PART 8 OF 9 AS WRITTEN BY VOLO)
The Hawk Man
This statue looks like a winged, hawk-headed being, and thus locals call it the Hawk Man. I can reveal that in fact it bears much resemblance to an aarakocra, one of the bird-people said to live in the Star Mounts in the High Forest. The statue’s wings are folded tightly against its back and have never unfurled, leaving its flight capability uncertain. It was brought low during its rampage across the city, and now it tilts decidedly toward the northeast due to a missing right foot — long ago broken up for building rubble, along with its right arm. Its left arm is extended out toward the north, palm forward as if in a gesture to say, “Stop.”
The body has been hollowed out and turned into a tower shared by several wealthy tenants, which is officially known as Sparaunt Tower after its owner. The statue’s left hand extends over a courtyard to the north, wherein lies the entrance of a tunnel carved through the arm. Visitors and residents can ring a bell in the courtyard, whereupon a door guard acknowledges the ringer and lowers a rope ladder for tenants and expected guests (or a rope chair that is drawn up for guests who are infirm or laden with heavy items).
Mokiakia refrains for making any purchases for the house at this moment, while Adrasteia purchases some furniture and 10 days worth of food for the home.
Fully rested and ready to explore the neighborhood, the group then leaves Trollskul Manor and begins strolling around. Eventually, they come across a typical adventuring gear store, not too far from Trollskull Alley. It is called Moesie's Marvelous Merchandise. After you decide what you want from this store, we can move on to the next one (e.g. weapons, armor, other stuff... Check you inventory to see what you already have.)
Stomach growling, I wince at the charge for Lif's Nothing Breakfast. At least now that we're buying food for the house he can serve us something real, and not charge us (I hope).
I look around at the items at Moesie's with interest, but I don't think I really need any of it right now.
Feeling a bit a betrayed by "breakfast," Sim reaches into her pack and feasts on some dried fruit and nuts she carries around (you do have rations in your inventory, right?)
As for geographical knowledge, you all know the Castle Ward pretty well (where the Yawning Portal is); Sim also knows the Dock Ward like the back of her hand (where Floon was taken); and you all know the North Ward generally well, but are not particularly familiar with Trollskull Alley and some of the other more residential areas. Hence, a map would still be useful. Looking it over at the store, Adrasteia notices that the map comes pre-marked with a few points of interest, which could be helpful. A map for the entire city of Waterdeep would function in tandem with Mokiakia's orb of direction to make sure that you are never lost again and always take the fastest route to places... hopefully.
Moesie gladly sells the items to Mokiakia. Noticing Adrasteia looking over the maps, Moesie offers her a deal: pay asking price for both maps (35gp) and get an item of up to 2gp in value for free!
LORE BOX (THE CITY'S SPLENDORS: THE WALKING STATUES - PART 9 OF 9 AS WRITTEN BY VOLO)
The Swordmaiden
This statue appears virtually identical to the Honorable Knight, except for its female form and open-faced helm. It was felled during the Spellplague after causing much chaos and slaughter. The residents of Waterdeep’s North Ward funneled much of their frustrated and dismayed reaction to its rampage into dismantling the statue, parts of which can now be found all over the North Ward, either incorporated into buildings or as bits of freestanding sculpture.
The head of the Swordmaiden sits in a stand of tall trees in the center of the block of the North Ward bounded by Hassantyr’s Street, Tarsar’s Street, Whaelgond Way, and Ussilbran Street. The center of its jaw and mouth have been replaced by a door, which leads into the shop known as Thort’s Findings. Undevvur Thort is a wizened ex-adventurer who leans on a cane (which some locals insist is more than just a cane). He lives in the small shop, whose many levels, staircases, and landings fill the hollowed-out interior of the head, and which is crammed with oddments sold to Thort by adventurers and other travelers. These items bear little placards in Thort’s beautiful, flowing handwriting that identify them (or at least provide speculation as to their origin and purpose). Nobles and wealthy merchants who desire props for themed revels often rent some of Thort’s wares as decoration — and many sages, alchemists, and wizards visit him regularly in search of potentially useful items.
I look over Adra's shoulder at the Trollskull alley map to see what some of the points of interest are around us. It seems like a good idea to buy these maps and get to know our new neighborhood better.
While we wait, I strike up a conversation with Moesie to ask about the latest scuttlebutt. 24
I recommend saving these maps in your PC somewhere, so you can reference them at will:
Trollskull Manor map (you already had this one):
Trollskull Alley map and legend:
LEGEND:
T1: Trollskull Manor;
T2: The Bent Nail (wood shop - sells both furniture and wooden weapons like crossbows, bows, and even some shields);
T3: Steam and Steal (metal shop - sells metal weapons armor and shields);
T4: Corellon's Crown (herbs and potion shop);
T5: Tiger's Eye (local private detective);
T6: Book Wyrm's Treasure: (book and scroll shop);
T7: Sewer Access
You are currently a bit south of the South Entrance, at a shop called Moesie's Marvelous Merchandise (a general adventuring goods shop).
Waterdeep map:
Moesie tells Sim: "Word on the street is that the Trollskull Manor has new owners now. Folk can't stop wondering if that famous tavern of theirs is finally going to be reopened! It used to be a famous meeting place for the many guilds in town you know. These new owners are sitting on a goldmine, if you ask me.... Now, where did you say you live again?"
(I mean, with a roll of 24, Moesie is spilling all the biscuits....)
I say in a hushed voice to my comprades "Yes, let's throw a party! But first, we need someone that serves real stuff to people. Also, I am thinking Lif is unaware he is dead now. I also don't think we mentioned to Lif we are the new owners."
Over the next half-hour or so, it becomes obvious to Moesie that the three of you are the lucky new owners he was referring to. Very excited about the possibility of having the Trollskull Manor's tavern open once again, he grabs ink, quill, and parchment and begins helping you guys plan the next steps. He had to do very similar work in order to open his own Marvelous Merchandise, after all.
Here is what Moesie shares with you:
TAVERN KEEPING EXPENSES
Moesie's notes summarize the one-time payments and continuing expenses associated with running the tavern in Trollskull Alley, as well as providing rules for determining how much coin the business makes or loses. In fixing up and reopening the tavern, you can expect to deal with various guilds without whose support the business is likely to fail. Repairs to the walls and the roof require the approval and oversight of the Carpenters’, Roofers’, and Plaisterers’ Guild. The Cellarers’ and Plumbers’ Guild is best equipped to handle the refurbishing of the basement and plumbing. Clean tablecloths are provided by the Launderers’ Guild. The streets around the establishment are kept up by the Dungsweepers’ Guild and the Loyal Order of Street Laborers. Meat must come from the Guild of Butchers; ale and wine from the Vintners’, Distillers’, and Brewers’ Guild; and bread and pastries from the Bakers’ Guild. The list goes on.
One-Time Expenses
1,000 gp to renovate the tavern over 12 days (also renovates the entire house)
250 gp for guild licenses and contracts (paid up front)
Regular Expenses
30 gp per month for maintenance and wages of hirelings (1 cook, 2 barmaids, and 2 cleaning staff members; this assumes you keep Lif on as your barman/shopkeep)
20 gp per month for all other guild expenses (bulk food/drink supplies, maintenance, and upkeep)
Profit or Loss
At the end of every month, each of you will roll a d100+10 to help we determine whether the tavern lost money or earned profit. We will use the middle roll out of the three for that determination. Anything below a 40 means you lost money for that month. Anything above a 60 means you earned a profit. Else, you break even. The exact amount of your monthly loss or gain depends on the roll (e.g. rolling a 10 is much worse than rolling a 39). This only kicks in once you have the tavern up and running.
Finally, Moesie then shares: "Quite expensive, I know. If you need more gold, I suggest talking to Vincent Trench over at the Tiger's Eye. He is a private detective and always says he has more work than he can handle on his own."
The group thanks Moesie for his help and makes its way to the Tiger's Eye.
This private detective’s business is unremarkable on the outside, its only distinguishing mark an orange-and-black sign featuring a cat’s eyes. The door is locked, and visitors must knock or ring the bell before being let in, which you do. It takes a few minutes before the door is opened, but then you are met by a human man who speaks concisely, dresses in a sharp suit, and smokes a slim pipe. He introduces himself as Vincent Trench, a detective and the owner of the Tiger’s Eye.
He invites you in and asks you to sit. Inside is a regal apartment dimly lit by flickering oil lamps. He says: "New customers... How can I help you?"
LORE BOX (NORTH WARD - PART 1 OF 2)
Nobles aplenty live in the North Ward, but the character of this ward is more peaceful than that of the Sea Ward. Though it has taverns and shops to suit a variety of tastes, the tenor of the area tends toward reserved and polite. Most streets are lined with row houses inhabited by the families of prosperous people of business, investing, and civic service. They are each wealthy enough to employ a servant or two, or they endeavor to appear as such.
For the best experience in the North Ward, go there just before dawn, buy a broadsheet, and settle in at a café with a view of the street. Watch as the ward comes quietly to life around you. At first, it will be so silent that you’ll be able to hear the resident a street over who opens her sash for fresh air and clears her throat. Then the birdsong will begin, and shortly thereafter, you’ll hear and then see the drays arriving with servants. These aren’t the live-in staff used by noble houses, but people hired to come and work for a day. Most of them come from less affluent parts of the city, arriving with the tools of their trade and outfitted in their customary garb: launderers and cooks in white, chimney sweeps and housecleaners in black, valets and child-minders in gray, gardeners in green, and tutors in blue.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Mr. Trench, it's good to meet the man we've heard such good things about in the neighborhood. We're actually here to offer our services. We can take on some of your overflow clients. We just traced and rescued a young nobleman and a young common man, both who had been kidnapped by the Xanathar Guild, so our skills are well-developed." Persuasion (teammates, feel free to help out): 11

Since I am a snake person, I love sleeping on the floor in my sleeping sack, no bed for me.
I buy a simple bed and armchair for a combined 14GP. I also want to buy 10 days' rations (10GP).
How much for a decent city map and a map of the region?
Also, am I at a stage where it would be advantageous to upgrade any weapons and/or armor?

How familiar is Sim with Trollskull Alley and Waterdeep? Would I need to purchase a map since Sim is in our group?
The maps are the only items that interest me at the moment.
I want a grappling hook, chalk, manacles and a hunting trap totaling 9GP and 1CP. I am excited to get ready for adventures!
