THE HISTORY OF THE ETERNAL WAR
Atlas has always been a continent divided. When the first ancestors of the great races rose from the primeval mud, the gods fought to claim them as their own. Some races fell under the sway of the dark gods, such as the orcs, goblins, and giants, while others were embraced by the gods of light, such as the humans, halflings, elves, and dwarves. Driven by their respective gods, the legions of darkness and the army of light fight for dominance in a land of blood. Centuries of unceasing warfare has left little opportunity for technological advancement, and cities are few and far between. The majority of Atlas' population reside in and around castles and strongholds for maximum protection. One can scarcely travel a dozen miles without sighting an army encampment, and children battle with wooden swords before they can even walk. Razed villages and leveled towns stand grim testament to the terrible cost of war. When the dust settles and the smoke clears, only one side will claim victory.
In the Recruitment and News Thread, you will find the Hall of Heroes, Casualties of War, Recruitment Notices, and the latest news from the War Letters.
It's time for the first Lore Dump of Eternal Warfare! As much fun as it is to gallivant around the world fighting evil, you gotta have a reason for that, right? Well, as it turns out, everything is rooted in-
THE GODS
The world was already formed when the gods appeared. There's never been any record of who created the world (often it's theorized that the Nameless Ones brought it into being, but no clergy member of the Church has confirmed this), but it was left for the gods to shape in their image. The Maker gods, Alios and Anir, created the vessels that would become the many races that would populate the world. Gaeyar and Ytis, the Bringers of Life, breathed life into the Makers' creations. From there, the remaining gods taught their creations many things to help them live in the world, and there was harmony between the gods and mortals. For hundreds of millennia, the gods lived alongside their creations, residing in temples they built them. But the world was shaken when Ebin was born.
The god of Storms, Amsyn, had fallen in love with a mortal woman. The two spent much time together, and after a time, the woman gave birth to a son, who she named Ebin. When she brought Ebin before Amsyn, he fled, knowing that he had done the unthinkable. Gods did not procreate in the same way as mortals, and the mere existence of Ebin was unheard of- and dangerous. Gods had to abide by rules that mortals did not, but a mortal with the power of god was something that threatened the very foundation of the world. When word of what Amsyn had done got out to the rest of the gods, the divine beings were split. Half of the gods, Amsyn included, wished to destroy Ebin before he mastered his power. The other half disagreed. This was the foundation of the Schism.
The gods ordered a hunt for Ebin. Every single one employed their resources to find the infant demigod and bring him before Amsyn, for Amsyn must right the wrongs he committed. It was Venos, the Deceiver, that found them first. Venos hid Ebin and his mother within his court, hoping his own divine aura would block out Ebin's. As Ebin grew, Venos taught him how to control his power and how to fight if the need ever arose. Ebin took to combat as if he was born for it, and it soon became apparent to Venos that Ebin was born in a way that all gods are born- as the need arose. After thirty years had passed, Ebin was brought before the gods. His mother had died five years before, and Venos had decided it was time that the gods saw what he was. Even as Venos explained Ebin's power and his right to godhood, Ebin felt uneasy in the home of his enemy. His own father, Amsyn, stood and declared that Ebin must die, no matter what. And so Ebin challenged his father to single combat.
There are no proper records of the battle, but they all end the same way- Ebin standing over his father, clutching his left eye. Ebin had defeated a god in battle, at the cost of his eye. The gods were in an uproar, declaring that Ebin had cheated. And it was here that the gods split into two.
The gods of Light, creators of the humans, elves, dwarves, etc., declared that Ebin threatened the balance of the world. The gods of Dark, Venos among them, argued that Ebin had proven himself as the god of War. And so the Eternal War began, Light against Dark.
Over the course of the war, five new deities arose. Out of necessity, as all gods are born. First came Vosais, the Lawkeeper. Vosais did not align with either the Light or the Dark, preferring to serve as their arbiter. Next came Nyo, the End. All things must come to an end, and when they do, it is Nyo's will. Similarly, Nyo did not align with either Light or Dark. The third was Atris, the Guide, the one who led travelers to their destination, regardless of their origin. Atris was the last of the unaligned deities. Fourth was Valkyr, the goddess of Battle. She was born to aid the Light, bringing the Light the military tactics that could rival Ebin's natural abilities. Finally, the Mortal-Made-God, Diias. Diias was an elf who wished to obtain true immortality, so he sought lichdom and achieved it. While not technically a god in the normal sense, the Dark has accepted him as one of their own, and his power rivals that of any other god.
The war began approximately 40,000 years ago, and the world has been ravaged by it. The Nameless Ones who came before the gods had left behind their own creations that had no claim from either Light or Dark, yet still end up aiding one side or the other. The Nameless Ones seem as if they will never return, leaving this world to the warmongering of the Light and Dark.

Thanks! I like moral ambiguity, but technically speaking, you guys are trying to maintain the natural order of the universe, so the Light is appropriate.
Also the Dark has a lich as one of their gods, so you know, there's that.
Don't let the title of this thread fool you. You can totally do discussion in this thread. I can set up a post to serve as a table of contents for lore if you want to do that.
I'm actually at a loss for words at how impressed I am, other than "stellar" but I feel like that's inadequate. I guess Kalahari's artistic talent stems from her player.
Well done! If I had an ounce of artistic ability, I might try my hand at putting up something of Ledmo. Unfortunately, that's not the case. I'll just have to stick to wordy descriptions, and hope for the best. But good job on that!
I cant draw. I draw worse than a 10 year old, and she used to draw a circle, eyes, nose, mouth, freckles, and stick arms. But, THAT is certainly WONDERFUL! : )
