(No one has tried anything at all at the top of the steps and there is nothing preventing you from heading back towards the storage room and back the way you all came.)
(not sure why my pc keeps changing "and" to "AMD" lol, but yes, Cinders is near the door and the lanterns. basically there is a T shaped intersection, to the left is stairs going down, the center is the door to the cell where you found chirpee, the hallway leads back to the storage room, and to the right is the stairwell going up. )
As the children continue to push and flee up the steps, they start to push against each other and a few of them begin to lose their balance. Those that do scratch at the walls and grab hold of the lanterns to keep from creating an avalanche down the stairs. When they grab the lantern, it pulls out from the wall and triggers the wooden wall to swing outward. The wooden wall is actually the back of what you can now see is a beautifully crafted bookshelf full or expensive looking books. Some of the little ones closest to the door fall forward inside, spilling into the room. Inside the room there is a confused and scared looking old man. "What?! who are you?" he exclaims, sitting at a small desk in what appears to be a personal quarters.
George grunts"they've dane something to Vruuk! Ye guys run 'n' ah will haud it aff"as he moves in to try and block the Zombie from moving further forward.

A trembling Rustler manages to load up another shot. But as he brings the weapon to bear, the Kenku hesitates for a moment, than ran up to pat George just below the shoulder(because it was all the bird could really reach). "Aren't Turtles supposed to be slow?" He says sweetly in another kid's voice while gesturing between their feet and Vruuk's own thus far more ponderous gait. Then in roughly strapping the heavy crossbow on, Rustler begins trying to shake George by the forearms. "Follow you fool." He says in an elderly voice.
With that, he tries to dash off for the stairs where the children went, still blissfully unaware of a certain Kenku's situation. Then again, he could see her clearly earlier. When and how she had such a growth spurt, Rustler would never know.

George, Rustler, and Carmir can hear the startled shouting upstairs coming from an old man. None of them however have heard his voice before. They manage to disengauge and move away from the hulking zombie just as it slams its heavy fists into the stone floor, cracking it in places before it continues its slow pursuit. Cinders is pushed up into the room like a small boat in a current as the wave of children push through the secret door. Upstairs in the sleeping quarters, an old cleric scrambles up from his desk and moves into the corner. "Who are you?! Don't hurt me!" He would shout before cowering in the corner as the room gets very crowded. As the last of you push your way into the room, the door swings shut behind you, leaving the Zombie Vruuk out of sight at the bottom of the spiral staircase.
Rustler looks around frantically as soon as the door. As soon as he finds so much as a bed or cabinet, he whistles at George and the other stronger kids to start pushing things in the way. Turning back to the old man, he trains his heavy crossbow on him with shaky hands. He repeats the man's question back to him in his own voice.

Rustler sees a small table and four chairs that are in next to a queen sized bed. There are also a few bookshelves that look rather heavy that are covered with books and other items. "My name.. My name is Father Bryon. These are my sleeping quarters." The scared old man would say looking around at the room full of filthy mud covered children.. some of whom are wielding chains and weapons.
(had to go way back to post #1047 to find the when you first met him.. and by YOU I mean Cinders saw him through a sack because everyone else that ever talked to him is dead or MIA (left the game))
Rustler nods and slowly lowers the heavy crossbow. Even as it clicks to him what "Father" meant in the elder's context, he shook it off, and made the sound of rustling pages while pointing to himself. Casting one last worried glance back at the currently closed doorway, he points to all the gathered children and screeches in the voice of Cassandra, "I knew there were more! Kill them all!"
He frantically gestures back to the doorway and follows up with various clips of Chad, Kyles, and soon after Vruuk's roar before making the sound of footsteps charging up stairs. Rustler is quiet for a moment to let the words sink, and then takes a leap of faith. He walks over to the old man, and tries to gently clasp his hand while saying in a pitiful girl's voice, "Help me."

"Cassandra? Tried to hurt you all? You.. you are all the missing kids from the orphanage on the hill outside of town aren't you? " The old man would look down to the kenku and gently squeeze his hand in return. "I.. I don't understand.. how Cassandra could do this.. and why..." He would then look around quickly and open the door to his room before looking out into the cathedral. "Quick, follow me! We need to get you all to the watch! Come Children.... and may the Silver Mother protect us" He says kissing a small silver crescent moon amulet before motioning to the children to follow him. As he does, there is a loud slam come from the other side of the secret room. "Quickly!" He would say as he moves into the cathedral.
As the zombie makes one last slam attempt, Carmir jumps back toward the cell while the others run up the stairs toward safety. "Um ... er ... " He looks down the hallway toward where they left Chirpee and then up the stairwell after the fleeing kids. The rogue stops retreating and the false image of the hurt kenku vanishes in a flash, leaving behind the tiefling's determined visage. He glares at the zombie and says in a strangely echoed voice, "Timeret."
When it is apparent the spell has no effect on the undead Vruuk, Carmir gulps, then disengages and runs (30 feet) down the passage back toward the storage room and Chirpee.
(@Wreck: Not sure if DDP's retroaction would've changed anything, but just in case it didn't for at least team old man and kids)
Rustler started to close his eyes in deep thought, trying to recall her reasoning. But next thing they know there is more slamming and yells and motioning to do things! Acting on Reflex, Rustler eagerly followed along with the rest of the kids, and is the last one out, if not closest to it. That's when he turned back to close the door after everyone else was out, as per their mother's instruction. For as far as Rustler could remember, he wasn't raised in a barn. So of COURSE he's not gonna let flies in.
Even if that fly happened to be a zombie.
"Quickly! Quickly! Quickly!" He inevitably parrots.

Rustler lingers behind the others, having taken the longest among most to adjust to the change. Then after he could help but look at others equal interest. Even looks of disgust fails to curb clear interest in everything and one in his surroundings, as the Kenku could hardly recall having gone to town. At least not for a good long while. By the time the silver feathered being has gotten his wits again, the others are well-ahead, eliciting a squawk of surprise followed by rapid tap of taloned feet from rushing to catch-up!

Once the others have safely made their way upstairs George does so as well. However at all times he faces the monster.
