"You're finally awake, dang, the necromancers did good, you're in one piece." You crack open your eyes slowly, immediately noticing the intense heat and sun. The woman looks upon your confused face, wondering where you are, or rather who you are. "The world was once a vibrant place, used to be cities, exorbitant amounts of technology, and beautiful works of architecture and the like. Well, at least that's what I was told by my grand-parents, who hear it from theirs and etcetera etcertera. Apparently they got so good that they made deals with the Dracons, Nevaldi, Nomuri, and the like. Earalis became a hub of galactic culture in those days, until the Sun let off a ray of power so immense that it ravaged and annihilated all intergalactic trade and technology on the planet and in our solar system. A lot of people died, because they thought they were so perfect as to be immune to death. Since those days, our society revitalized." The woman tells the story as with sad remembrance, at this point you notice her garb, a tank-top with a Kama on her belt, with a black metal band fastened upon her arm. "Well, I'll finish the story later, but welcome," and as she says this, she points to a distant cityscape amongst the sandy dunes, " to the Atlantic Desert, and to the Jewel of this side of the world, Veronira."
So this is my stab at a "modern" setting for a D&D world, it has several premises:
It takes place on a place like an Earth of the future, it is called Earalis, it is a rebuilt society, with cities and the like.. This World serves as the Material Plane in regards to D&D cosmology. Yet, it is not the place you and me have grown up on. The tech level is a mix of Star Wars, Our Technology of today, and Destiny (The Game). However, Swords, Armor, and Shields are the common weapons, if a tad futuristic in design.
There is little gunpowder, but primarily, no guns or firearms of any sort. The elements that make it up or the individuals who discovered did not pursue it, however, a few grenades exist. However, aside from guns, the rest of our modern tech is here.
Magic exists, and it is rather common, the primary form it takes written is a form of Draconic.
Monsters exist, whether spawns from ancient technology, magical creations, or travelers from the old days of Earth, they exist in many forms, from the lowly flumphs to the mighty dragons.
Pending Characters:
GnomeKing: As Unknown
The Adventurers:
xDarkWolfv: As Xen Halthorn, A Sorcerer Hailing from a Draconic Bloodline
ArgentTheWise: As "Booster" Reynolds, A Rogue with a Electronic Edge
MrAutoShades: As Orien Lucianus, an Artificer who wields Invention
FrandalSilvereyes: As Tenko Aylar, a Fighter with a Mech3 Unit.
This is a Homebrewed campaign, and as such, I have made some additions to the standard D&D rules:
The Driving Skill, based on Dexterity, it is used in regards to racing/chasing, jumping in a vehicle, and performing vehicular feats.
The Computers Skill, based on Intelligence, is used to manipulate or extract information via computer or digital device, it is similar to Investigation and Thieves' Tools, except in regards to computers.
I've added Starfaring Vehicles, Star-Navigational Tools, Hacking Tools, Cell Phones, and other items as well.
Mech suits are a thing, and I'm in the works of making a Pilot subclass for the Fighter.
I'm looking for 4-6 players, I am open to UA content, Volo's Guide, Feats, the Variant Human, and what is in the PHB, I also have some Homebrew I cooked up for this, and if you're interested you can play from them as well.
Post a character concept (backstory) with name, race, and class, and if I give you the green light, submit a full set of stats please. If you have questions, just post them here.
EDIT: I've modified the setting a little bit, and added some information regarding some Homebrew for this setting.
I'd love to join! A few questions though: Do you allow additional feats? And if so, do you allow the Variant Human? Are there any sizable bodies of water if a character wanted to be a sailor (not married to that idea, just thinking about options) or would sailors be largely space-based, operating spacecraft and the like?
Feats and the Variant Human I allow, as for the sailor, there are a few large seas on the borders of the desert, as for space-farers, there are a fairly common. So yes, you could play a spacefaring sailor instead.
I'd be interested in joining as well. I'm very interested in the setting. Questions though. Are our character meant to be experienced in any way? Such as do we remember anything of the life we had before we died and were revived.
My Character:
"Hi, My name is Xen Halthorn. I'm a male Half-Elf Dragon Bloodline Sorcerer. I'm kinda quiet compare to most people and don't really like to be the center of attention though my actions sometimes put me there. I'm fairly good with technical stuff like computers and working with mechanical things. I don't know i just have a knack for it i guess. I mean if you want proof of my ability then just talk to Owlsly here *Gestures to Mechanical owl on shoulder* I made him myself. "(Owlsly doesn't have to be a thing if you don't want to allow it. I never imagined Owlsly doing much other than recording data and being a general companion for Xen with possible modifications later.)
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
"Go then, there are other worlds than these." -Stephen King, The Gunslinger
I'm going to make it where the campaign begins one year after each character's resurrection, thus to allow background features and the like, in addition to the past life experience. So basically, you get your past life experience plus one year of experience in this future. And the mechanical owl is fine.
Hmm what the hell - I'll toss my hat in the ring - this sounds interesting
maybe something like a variant human rogue (hacker?) or something warforged (seems like that might fit nicely in the setting - always wanted to try playing one)
What about an aaracokra who has reincarnated in a human ( If I understood correctly we "resurrect" as at the begining of Destiny) and now he follows a career as a pilot trying to recover that lost part of his soul?
Also as far as character creation goes - how do you want stats done? standard array? your array (16 , 15, 13, 12, 10, 6)? standard rolls, points buy.....
I am in the works of a modern slew of subclasses, I'm currently working on the Pilot Subclass (for the fighter), I can work up a Monk Street Fighter next.

Can the Mech use weapons? I see it as a personal suit of normal size, not a giant robot, so I guess that it will use the same weapons as a character do.
Here we got him:
Tenko Aylar Human fighter (Mech Pilot) lvl 1: AC:15 / Init:+3 / Mov 30 ft. / Size: Medium / Att: +5 / Damage: 1d8+3
Rolls:( As usual I have the screen capture if needed)
Since the necromancer woke him up, Tenko knew something was amiss. He felt heavy, clumsy, and shortsighted. He past a few years wandering the city, barely eating and always looking to the skys, as if he were to find the answers to their questions in the air. And one day he did. A squadron of flying Mech3 suits overflown him at the vantage point he used to be above the city. From that day he changed. He started training and learning really hard, and he even started to make jokes. For he had a new objective now; He will flight one of those machines into the sky someday.
He joined the ranks of the city's defenders and had served there since then, learning, and making his way up towards the Mech3 corps.

Give me a few to work up some ideas.....
Skameros - Bugbear Barbarian - Out of the Abyss - By Kerrec
Follow your Arrow where it Points - Tabaxi Monk - Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus (by Pokepaladdy)
Citron Pumpkinfoam - Fairy Monk - Project Point: Team Longsword
I have a hacker subclass for the rogue.... If you're interested.

I would love to play this as a modern monk. Does anyone have a modern subclass, like street fighter or something?
Myron Craw- Isles of Famine
There is modern magic UA for warlock, cleric, and wizard I think.

The Mech uses the same weapons as regular people do. Sorry for any potential confusion.
