You are a seasoned group of adventurers currently "between quests". You've stopped in Avlor at the end of an uneventful day on the road as a convenient waypoint on to rest and get some much needed down time for a couple of nights. Shortly after entering the city gates from the south west, you make your way into a large plaza not far from the gates. To the east is a large stone gothic style cathedral adorned with gargoyles. Across the plaza to the west is a row of shops that have all closed for the evening. To the north and south are residences. You spot what appear to be a group of drunk residents staggering toward you from the north and east. As they get closer, Balian and Jarl are the first to notice the vacant expressions on their faces. These are no drunks; they're zombies! And they appear to have an interest in consuming your brains...
Post in any order. If someone ahead of you hasn't posted yet, put your post in a spoiler, reading only those turns that come before you until after you hit post. You may want to include a backup action, along with the conditions that would trigger it (e.g., "if Z1 is already dead, I'll attack the nearest other zombie instead"). I will sequence everyone's turns at the end of the round and narrate the results, post an updated map, and updated HP/damage taken. If I'm able I'll post more often than that.
Squiggles frowns as he squints at the shambling creatures Balian and Jarl have noticed.
"Zombies? In the epicentre of a metropolitan area? Peculiar. Are we sure we have to deal with this? I'd really just appreciate going around them to read my new tome on phylacteries."
Seeing that this is not an option, Squiggles sighs.
"May as well have some fun then. Anyone have marshmallows?". He casts Create Bonfire on Z1.
As the lead zombie shambles toward the group, drool sliding out of the corner of its mouth, it groans loudly as a bonfire appears out of nowhere directly at its feet, charring its flesh (11 damage).
"C'mon, let's just find the nearest inn. See! These people seem to have the right idea. I could go for a large mug or two of ale myself. Good evening,"the genasi calls to the approaching drunks. Having not received a response, he squints his eyes as the figures get a bit closer. "Er... Friends, I think we may have wandered onto to something here!"Shale springs into action pulling his shield, emblazoned with the symbol of Rhe Huntress, of his back. "I believe the bells have already sounded for you once!"the cleric points a finger at the first zombie (z1, z4 if dead).
Not the brightest of the bunch, Brix is, at first, INCREDIBLY confused as to why a group of drunks is closing in on them! It doesn't register that they're zombies until Squiggles points it out. Even then, a plainsman like Brix still isn't too familiar with a zombie's full capability despite whatever previous experience he's had with the group.
(OOC: No matter how much experience he gets, he'll always be a few cards short of a full deck.)
But not one to shy away from a fight, the short, pale Goblin instinctually hops into battle and speeds off without a word.
Movement (40ft)-- Assuming the rest of the group will make quick work of the nearest zombie, Brix begins moving north, then makes a sharp right toward the next nearest zombie.
"Eww," he'll say in his hoarse, croaky voice. Now face-to-face with the zombie, he spits on the ground and scoffs before raising his rapier.
(OOC: I'll add Fury of the Small damage in there, too. +11 damage. Why not! Also realized I forgot to add reckless advantage to the extra attack -- not that it should matter.)
Bonus Action -- Disengage. (OOC: Just because he can.)
(rerolling damage, since Z1 was missing HP from the bonfire: 19)

Already engulfed in flames from the wizard's bonfire, the zombie hears the toll of an eerie bell as though reaching its ears from inside its decaying brain. Although it is able to resist the full effects of the spell (taking 9 damage), that isn't enough to keep it on its feet, as it crumples into a heap, providing added fuel for the bonfire.
"A tavern and a drink does sound good,” Jarl agrees. He looks up as Shale spots the people staggering towards them. “Oh, someone else has drones here —“ He cuts himself off as Squiggles and Shale start attacking. “Or not.” More attacks. “I really hope you don’t belong to somebody,” he calls, before moving forward and more into the shadows (to N10 or I5 if one will work). He casts a quick cantrip and lobs a stone at Z6.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Dalrak says a quick prayer to himself before rushing in. Dalrak moves to put himself in between two of the zombies (probably between Z1 and Z2). With shield and warhammer, Dalrak will take a strike at each of the two zombies. The shield holds the first zombie back while Dalrak attacks with the first strike. Continuing with the momentum of the weapon, he strikes the second.
With the first blow of Dalrak's hammer (11 damage), the second zombie lets out a guttural groan of pain and anger, getting ready to strike back. Before he can slam at the dwarf, however, the hammer comes down again, smashing through the zombie's skull (12 damage), leaving it a simple corpse once again.
Brix:
Not the brightest of the bunch, Brix is, at first, INCREDIBLY confused as to why a group of drunks is closing in on them! It doesn't register that they're zombies until Squiggles points it out. Even then, a plainsman like Brix still isn't too familiar with a zombie's full capability despite whatever previous experience he's had with the group.
But not one to shy away from a fight, the short, pale Goblin instinctually hops into battle and speeds off without a word. Brix begins moving north, then makes a sharp right toward the next nearest zombie (ending up at G9).
"Eww," he says in his hoarse, croaky voice. Now face-to-face with the zombie, he spits on the ground and scoffs before raising his rapier.
Recklessly thrusting the pointy weapon toward the slow-moving creature, he pierces the third zombie in its abdomen (10 damage). Quickly pulling his rapier back out, the barbarian thrusts again, even more fiercely this time (for 20 damage), this time skewering it straight through a couple of vital organs. Whatever force had been animating the creature seems suddenly to leave the body, which collapses on the ground.
Jarl:
"A tavern and a drink does sound good,” Jarl agrees. He looks up as Shale spots the people staggering towards them. “Oh, someone else has drones here —“ He cuts himself off as Squiggles and Shale start attacking. “Or not.” More attacks. “I really hope you don’t belong to somebody,” he calls, before moving forward (to N10) and more into the shadows. He casts a quick cantrip and lobs a stone at Z6.
The magic stone makes contact (9 damage), and the injured zombie turns toward Jarl and begins to shamble toward the druid, enraged.
Balian is up. Z1,Z2,Z3 are ex-zombies. Z6 is injured. Z4 and Z5 haven't been hit yet.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Balian lets out a short laugh as he spies the zombies shambling towards the group. "I do hope nobody had anything better to do tonight!"
Letting his companions thin the herd a little, he takes his time to pick a target. Deciding on the zombie heading towards Jarl, he raises his bow and pulls an arrow back on the drawstring. Exhaling, he releases the arrow towards the zombie.
Balian's arrow is on target, sinking deep into the zombie's flesh (9 damage). It lets out another moan, but carries on shambling toward Jarl.
The other zombie near Jarl (Z4), seeing its compatriot with its eye on the drow, turns to its right to avoid having to compete for flesh and organs, swiping its palm toward Dalrak with surprising ferocity (Attack: 10 Damage: 3). However, despite the unusual force, the zombie's hand glances harmlessly off of Dalrak's breastplate.
The remaining uninjured zombie [Z5] shambles toward Brix, foolishly thinking the smaller target would be an easier one despite seeing the barbarian quickly dispatch its companion. It slams its fist toward Brix (Attack: 21 Damage: 3), but the rogue easily dodges out of the way.
Meanwhile, the zombie with an arrow embedded in its flesh [Z6] closes the distance with Jarl, scratching at his face (Attack: 7 Damage: 4), but cannot penetrate the drow's flesh.
"These are surprisingly vigorous. I wonder if they are constituted the same as other zombies?"
Squiggles casts Mage Hand and a spectral hand appears, and moves over to Z6, and pokes it in the eye while Squiggles sits down and observes it, preparing to take notes.
"Jarl, do these zombies feel natural to you? I mean, as far as Zombies go that is?". Somewhat mumbling to himself, "I wonder if you could put a zombie in a phylactery? They don't have a soul technically, so perhaps there might be some sort of....."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Shale moves into the square proper (L8). "Stop playing around, Squiggles," the cleric admonishes, "or I will put you in one of your phylacteries that you're always going on about." He takes aim with his spear at the same one the mage is poking with his spectral hand, and throws it at the undead creature.
Brix is too engaged with the zombie in front of him to hear the commotion going on behind him. After dodging out of the way of his opponent's attack, he prepares to counter.
