"I'm not too surprised that they're more powerful than my drones," Jarl says (referring to his Fungal Infestation 1 hp zombies). "Though they're about as fresh as they are, they're hardly overripe. I'd say they're no stronger than the zombies I can create with animate dead." (a class spell for Jarl)
Balian accepts the verbal onslaught from Brix with a polite smile. As the goblin turns away, Balian produces a single silver coin and flicks it with his thumb, so that it arcs over the goblin's shoulder and lands on the ground in front of him.
"Full price for full-sized adventurers, my friend!"
About to continue the verbal jousting with Brix, the half-elf turns his head as he hears the faint flapping of wings from the north. In one swift motion, he knocks an arrow to his bow and aims it at the creature, while shouting to the others.
"Something else has come to greet us, eyes up! At least this one doesn't look like it'll want to eat our brains. Possibly."
Now that Balian has drawn your attention to it, anyone with nature or history proficiency who would like to make a corresponding check to try to identify this type of creature and recall information about it can do so.
Shale chuckles slightly at Balian ribbing of Brix. "So about that drink...,"he trails off, following the aim of the rogue. Bringing his shield up and readying his spear as the creature swoops in, he says to Brix. "This may be your chance to even the score."
As soon as he hears the coin hit the ground, Brix drops to his knees to gather it up. He produces this guttural chuckle, as he picks it up and raises it above his head triumphantly. "Coin is...coin," he mutters.
He's too caught up in excitement to care what Balian and Shale are raving about.

Squiggles squints at the creature. "I feel like i've seen this in one of my books. Maybe it was in Iliord's Creature Compendium...."
this as an aarakocra. You've not only read a lot about them, you've written a few papers about them. They are native to the elemental plane of air, and the few that have made their way to the material plane tend to be reclusive and stay out of the affairs of others if they don't believe there is a threat to their own communities. They rarely provoke conflicts unless directly threatened, and to the extent that they care about wider struggles between the forces of good and evil, they are more likely to align themselves with good.
"OH! I mistook the tell-tale proboscis because of distance. It's an Aarakocra! Don't shoot it Balian; it's highly unlikely to be a foe, and is more than probably coming to warn us about something. Plus, if you fell this one before it gets to us, i'm pretty confident our friend Brix will be a tad aggrieved."
"Whatever has brought this avian dweller from the Elemental Plane of Air is unlikely to be pleasant."
Dalrak hears the warning from Squiggles, but he does not trust this creature for the moment. Dalrak will shoulder his shield and draw his crossbow, loading a bolt. Dalrak will take a position of cover nearby behind some rubble or stone.
The creature lands cautiously in front of Brix, its gaze darting defensively between Brix and Balian. It squawks urgently at you, "KRRRAWWW!" before saying in a Common that sounds as if it's being repeated by a trained parrot, "Please, lower your weapons. I mean no harm. In fact, I'm here to ask for your help. Who is your leader? Or, more to the point, who speaks for you?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
BRIX
The coin in Brix's hands almost come loose with the sudden gust of wind and surprise landing of a giant bird in front of him (DEX: 8), but he just barely manages to keep a hold of it, pocketing the silver piece.
He looks up at the giant bird, drawing his sword and readying himself in a defensive stance...which he softens after the bird surprisingly begins speaking in Common.
"By the gods! All this trouble, and still no ale!" he says, sheathing his rapier. He waddles off, away from the talking bird, paying it no mind.
Shale lowers his guard when the creature lands and declares no ill will to the group - having been suspect of the gnomes assessment of the creature's intentions. With a slight grin, he shakes his head at Bailan. "We don't have a...," once again cut short as two others proclaim Brix as their leader. He just smiles and shrugs, "All yours, Boss."
The aarakocra watches Brix waddle away with its head cocked at a 45 degree angle, then turns toward Balian. "In good hands, I see. I'll cut to the chase; time is of the essence. We've been watching the group of you for the last few days, and anticipating your arrival here in Avlor. RAAAA! As you can see, the city is experiencing some... issues RAAA! with its dead. Namely, they do not, um, seem to be remaining members of that category. But lucky for us, a decorated group of adventurers has turned up! I'm sad to say it, but you may represent our best hope of nipping this little problem in the bud. No offense. RAAA! Will you help?"
Brix momentarily stops in tracks, hearing three of his companions name him leader of the group. He turns around, looks up and down at the giant bird, then turns back around to respond to the group. "What're you half-wits talking about? We ain't have no leader!" He again turns to looks up at the talking bird. "And I ain't talking to no giant bird -- especially one that talks."
He turns to Squiggles. "Since YOU saw it first, YOU should talk to it. YOU'RE the smart one."
He turns to Shale, making his way to him. "Shale! The ale!"
(It's at this point the aarakocra begins to address Balian.)

Jarl will stand, but not draw any weapons. (Is it past sundown, or are the shadows long enough that direct sunlight is not a worry about this point?)

It's just after sunset. There's still enough light to see by, but I'd call the sunlight at this point "indirect".

"He does."
-OOC I can roll for deception if needed :) Feel free for a more serious member of the team to butt in.
Dalrak lowers his crossbow slightly. Dalrak shouts out, "that is correct! Our goblin leader speaks for us all!" Dalrak tries to keep a straight face.
