(I invited 33 players to the last level-1 fight. 10 of those advanced to level-2. Half of the 8 level-2s who were already fighting at the time did not advance to level-3)
(See, here's the thing. Even without shield, a level 2 would have to roll a 19 or 20 to hit. And, shield lasts the entire round, so shielding one attack protects me for a while.)

(Yah, that's why I said it's entirely possible 8 of them wouldn't be enough. Not sure what you're last class level is in to know eactly how many spell slots you have since the coliseum campaign I'm in still shows you as fighter 1/sorcerer 2/paladin 2, but either way you get quite a few rounds of shields, assuming anyone hits you to need it in the first place. Though some of them might have spells that use saving throws instead of having to make attacks)

(Fighter 1/Sorcerer 2/Paladin 3 (Oath of Vengeance). This way I can burn Oath of Vengeance on Keygella, and always have advantage.)
