He tries to answer Ajax's questions, but he is clearly not the brightest of the band. In short, what he knows is this: They are called Redbrands because of the red cloaks they wear. There are maybe 15-20 Redbrands currently (he thinks), but Glasstaff is trying to increase their numbers. The Manor is their hideout, but their job is to take over Phandalin. Why, he doesn't know. He's never seen Glasstaff himself. Regarding the Sleeping Giant, Grista, a female dwarf, runs it. The Redbrands typically go in groups of 3-4 to the tavern, but they do not threaten Grista. It's just a seedier place than the other inn. As for himself, his name is Than and he is from Greenbarrow, a small village several miles south of here. He was thrown out of the village for his repeated fighting and found the Redbrands.
..If I were you, I would not mention our presence in the fight, if you care about what will happen to you IF you will be released: you have nothing to gain and, all in all, you and your poor friends had put up the fight : we acted in self-defence. Next time you will know better. My last advice? pack your things and get away from here: if these Redbrands know that you loose a fight and for some weeks you will be unable to carry things...I mean, you get out of this with some broken fingers, don't push your luck, boy, and pray we will not meet soon. Farewell, THAN OF GREENBARROW
He spells the last words plainly and calmly, just to make clear that the party knows who he is and where he is from.
Ajax suggests to the others to leave the prisoner be, whispering:
if what Sildar says is true, he won't be realesed soon, the later the better, but let' suppose two days. He will likely report to the Redbrands then. Until then, we have the surprise factor, if we really wanna do something about it
Once outside the prison, Ajax refers everything they heard to Sildar, taking care to do it only if the the major is not around.
Sildar, if you really want our help, you need to push it with the Major: the prisoner put up a fight and in that fight three persons are dead (sooner or later our presence will be mentioned by him: if we really must, we will witness we acted in self-defence, in the end it is the truth). In the meanwhile, the prisoner (a certain THAN OF GREENBARROW) mentioned that the chief of these Redbrands is a certain Glasstaff (human and wizard, apparently) , that they are working for someone called BLACK SPIDER and thet their "headquarter" is the manor (actually the one you were interested about). So, if you really want our help, do you know anything else about the Redbrands (what are they doing here apart from harassing the civilians?), about this Galsstaff and about this Black Spider? And what about this MANOR, how comes they settled there?
After hearing what the party learned from Than, Sildar narrows his eyes. "A strange coincidence, isn't it, that my wizard friend Iarno goes missing somewhere near the Manor and now there is this Glasstaff, a wizard, who has suddenly appeared." He pauses, stroking his chin in thought. "I hate to think badly of Iarno, but it seems just too coincidental to be happenstance. In any event, the Redbrands need cleared out. So," he straightens, clearing his throat. "200gp reward for clearing out the Redbrands, with more possible if you can find Iarno or what happened to him. In addition, 500gp for locating Cragmaw Castle and defeating or driving off the leader there after the Redbrands are dealt with. Agreed?" he asks, an eyebrow raised.
"That sounds pretty good to me," Mulligan replies.
If everybody agrees, he'll ask Sildar, "by the way, you wouldn't happen to know where we might find someone to accompany us that can maybe cast a healing spell or two, would you? This might get a little messy, and I'd rather we have someone who can pick us back up if we go down."
((Basically, can we get an NPC lackey with a Healing Word or Cure Wounds?))
Sildar nods at Mulligan. "Yes, it might. I don't know of anyone who can cast healing spells offhand, but I will see what I can dig up. If nothing else, I may be able to lay my hands on a healing potion or two - would that suffice?" he asks. "I will see what I can find and meet you at the Stonehill first thing in the morning?"
((Assuming the party agrees, Sildar will meet you the next morning at the inn. Don't forget - you should also have a couple of healing potions you found in Klarg's treasure. Congrats - after the fight with the Redbrands and the successful interrogation (along with some nice RP!) you all level up!!))
ooc: I heard level 3? wow! does it work after a long rest?
ooc: I made some questions to Sildar but apparently he didn't answer. it is just because we were writing together or do you want me to repeat the questions in game (please don't)
Ajax replies to Sildar, trying to be neutral and with a calm tone of voice
I really appreciate your offer, it means we are to be trusted. Still, if the reward might be considered fair for Cragmaw castle, I think it is a little cheap for the Redbrands: 200 gold pieces are barely 50 gp each! barealy a healing potion each. Gods know we will need way more than that! Sir, if what the prisoner said is true: we are almost 4 against 20...maybe 16 if we don't consider the ones we fought...in this way it would seem (if not desperate) a very risky and difficult task, our lives will be at stake! I don't know how much you can gathered but I think a fair offer would be 400 gp plus 2 healing potions each
((Yes, level 3 - I will assume you long rest at the inn, waiting for Sildar to show the next day))
Sildar looks at Ajax, his face carefully composed. "What I have offered is what I can do. Phandalin is small and I have already requested aid from the Lord's Alliance. However, it will be some time before it arrives. Also, I doubt that there are really 20 Redbrands at the Manor. From what little information I have been able to gather, there are likely to be around 10 Redbrands in the Manor at any given time." He sighs. "I do understand your request for healing, but potions are scarce here, healers themselves even more so. I will see what I can do on that front, that is all I can promise."
Ajax looks at the others and then raises his shoulders
Fine then, we trust any insight you have
Once outside, Ajax shares his toughts with the others:
Let's just hope Sildar will help us with sone potions, we will need every drop. There is something I have been thinking: some of these Redbrands rascals go to the inn for fun but eventually they go to the sleep to the Manor, right? What about an ambush?! I'd say two of us goes to drink at the inn, playing aloof, stay close to the window and the others wait outside. Once we understand how many (if any) will be there tonight we can decide if to ambushed once they get outside the inn , hopefully tipsy.
Then tomorrow we can face less of them.
And let' not forget we also have a hint: the kid at our inn. He mentioned he discovered a secret passage for the manor: immagination of children runs wild but, who knows? it may be true...
What do you think?!
ooc: I know you all wnat to get to level 3 (me too) but I think this idea of the ambush may be worth
((The Manor is just outside of town - an easy walk. There was a rumor about a secret passage from Pip, the innkeeper's son. While Sildar is trying to find what you requested, what's the plan? Go back to the Sleeping Giant and find more Redbrands? Go back to the inn and ask Pip for more information? The inn and sleep? Wander about town? Head for the Manor?))

I'm still around - it's been a little bit of a crazy week for me personally. What's the plan?
Ajax turns to the others
”I think that’s pretty much it, but if you have further questions...”
,
Kyanite shakes his head no. "I guess it is time to prepare for hunting bandits and spiders. I think a stiff drink is in order."
DM: what time of day do we have?
