Harmony could smell all the baked goods as she saw the halfing woman, hearing her introduce herself and telling them of all the options they have to choose from for 10 copper pieces, asking what they would like. "Hello Merry Merry, what a cute name you have! We certainly are so far! Hm, oh man there is just so much to choose from. Let's see, I'll have two strawberry cookies then." she had said back happily, giving the other two silver pieces and waiting for the change back. Then she heard Jove ask for a wheel of cheese and rice, confused until he said it was a custom for him to eat only the minimum such as rice except for festivities where they can indulge a little which explains the cheese before asking for spoons for all of them too. "Oh, thank you. But only rice and cheese? You're at a festival with all sorts of sweets and goodies to eat that you may not get to have again, surely you can eat and indulge in whatever you want." Harmony had said to Jove innocently, thinking that he should be celebrating and not holding back. But then she was hearing Abraxas and Jove ask about books, surprised and pouting a little as that seems so ordinary and boring to her compared to some of the other cool stuff the merchants seem to be selling here. Soon she listened as Halsen ordered something and talked about how his aunt used to make them for him as a boy, so happy before his parents pushed him towards the monastery. "Aw, that's so sweet. Make sure to eat all the elderberry pastries that you can get and have lots of fun then." Harmony told him with a joyful smile, wanting him to be happy and think only of good things. It is the Midwinter Gala right now, everyone should be celebrating and having the most fun possible after all.
OOC: Inventories have been updated. 10 copper pieces = 1 silver piece, so there is no change.
"Oh, I'm so sorry love, I only have baked goods available at the moment," Merry tells Jove as she quickly takes coinage for the other orders, darting about the tent to bring a blueberry pastry to Abraxas, an elderberry pastry to Halsen, and two strawberry cookies to Harmony. She expertly answers the group's questions as she does so.
"You'll want to stop by Pavel's tent next, then, I'd think, if anybody has books it'll be him. He's a right grump but real knowledgeable, that one. Although - oh! I do have a book, and you're not from Waterdeep, and it's perfect! I happen to have a copy of Volo's Waterdeep Enchiridionfor just this occasion. Is there anything you would like to know about our fair city? Perhaps you'd like to know about the history of Waterdeep, or the Sea Ward, or the City of the Dead?" she says when Abraxas and Jove ask about books.
"The most interesting thing I've seen? Someone asking for cheese and rice in a pastry tent is interesting," she winks, "But surely you've heard that Aria Cavatina is performing later? If you want an interesting sight, you'll want to see her performance later at the Cassalanter Villa. A wondrous sight she must be. It's said that when she sings she glows with the light of the heavens!"
“Thank you, Merry Merry. You are an excellent cook,” Abraxas says. He tries to catch Jove’s eye. “I propose we stop at Pavel’s tent, for at least a moment.” He turns back toward Merry Merry. “The Enchiridion is a guide to the city, then? I was hoping to visit the Blackstaff’s library. But until then, will there be ale at the Cassalanter Villa?”
Jove is visibly confused then saddened by the revelation of no rice and cheese. You can surmise that he had been used to a way of living for a while, and he is having a difficult time adjusting to the new environment.
"In that case, Merry, do you have any sugar cookies? And a cup of flour if you have one. If that is a normal thing to ask for..."
He does pipe up at the sound of this Volo Book.
"Say. I heard there is a club that makes maps by looking at the stars. Would it say anything about some surveyors like that in the book?"
"Yes, all of us merchants have a copy for the Gala. It's got information on the city, its history, and tips on getting around. It says here that spellcasters who intend to stay in Waterdeep for any length of time are encouraged to join the Blackstaff's Watchful Order. You can find Blackstaff Tower in the Castle Ward, though getting there while the Midwinter Gala is in full swing will be mighty hard to do. For ale you'll want to see Wizdil in his tent. The whole Sea Ward is going to be at the Villa to see Aria perform - the Cassalanters are well to do, but feeding a festival is another matter," Merry says.
"A cup of...flour, huh. I suppose if you want a cookie before it becomes a cookie, who am I to deny that?" she answers Jove. "That'll be 10 copper pieces for the sugar cookie, and 10 copper pieces for the cup of flour." She begins leafing through the book for information. "Aha, star maps are sold by many vendors at Simril, says right here. We're not far away from that if you're hanging around the city for a time," she finishes.
OOC: Let me know if there is anything else you would like to cover with Merry or if we're ready to advance to Pavel's tent or another merchant.
Jove thanks pays the lady and picks apart the sugar cookie, eating the middle first and the outside rim last. Every once in a while he will stick his finger in his mouth, plop it out, put it into the flour, and pop it back in his mouth, sort of like you would one of those Wonka Fun Dip candies.
"Do you happen to have directions to Simril? That does sound interesting."
OOC: Jove is ready to leave whenever the others are. I have been talking quite a lot, so I am going to sit back and enjoy my cookie for a bit. Also, do I need to update my coinage, or will you do it, DM?
Harmony smiled as she got the cookies, not getting change back since she gave exactly enough money. She immediately started to eat her cookies, happy as they tasted so good. "These are really good!" she said back to Merry, hearing her talk about books and the city but not really interested in that at all. But then Merry mentioned Aria Cavatina, how she's performing and that she glows with the light of the heavens as Harmony instantly perked right up. "Of course, that is another reason I'm here! Guys, we just HAVE to go see her! I can't wait to see her performance at the Villa and get some inspiration from it." Harmony had said gleefully, really wanting to go listen to Aria as soon as possible. She was practically bouncing with energy in anticipation while finishing off her cookies, not even really listening or paying attention to the other stuff Merry was talking about. Now Harmony was wanting to head out right now, to do some singing and dancing before getting to see Aria Cavatina perform in person.
"Simril isn't a place, it's a celebration! Stay in Waterdeep for a tenday or two and you'll see everybody gathering all over Waterdeep to see the Light of Simril," Merry answers Jove before waving farewell.
A smaller tent down the street carries a sign advertising stationery. A young half-elf sits within, eyes hovering over a copy of Volo's Waterdeep Enchiridion. "Customers? Have a look. Everything is 3 gold apiece," he says without so much as looking up.
Laid out in front of him on a table is an array of stationery - notebooks, holiday cards, blank scrolls, quills, and monogram wax stamps.
Jove would like to look at the cards, ink canisters, and especially stamps. He is looking for something with an infinity sign or a d20 icosehedron on it.
Abraxas holds a glass bottle of ink up to the torch light. He stares into it, gauging the color. He shakes the bottle, quickly removes the lid and listens to the sound of ink sloshing. Taking a tiny spot, he rubs it between his index finger and thumb, testing the texture. Finally, he puts the ink bottle against his upper lip and sniffs.
Abraxas smirks. “Have to do. I guess,” he says. “Your price is a bit steep for this . . . liquid. Not sure it deserves to be called ink.” He puts a neat stack of three coins on the counter and puts the bottle in a small sack within his shoulder bag. “Are there any books beside the one you’re reading? And, actually, are you interested in selling your copy? Five silver?”
Harmony had heard Merry talk about how Symril is a celebration in Waterdeep, people gathering here to see the Light of Symril. "That seems really fun. Thank you, bye!" she called out with a smile, waving before leaving with the others. "Oh, that sounds like so much fun. We should definitely go to see that Light of Symril too." she then said to the guys, following them to the smaller tent advertising stationery. Harmony started to look around inside, not quite so interested in a lot of this but she did find some cutely decorated notebooks and even funny holiday cards. This would be great for sending to her mentor to wish her a happy holiday, finding one that she liked before she paid the three gold to the half-elf. Harmony couldn't wait to send this, hoping that her mentor is having fun right now also.
After poring through the plethora of stamps, Jove finds one with a symbol he is looking for, an infinity symbol...or perhaps an 8.
"Hey if you don't like my wares, you can always wait until after the Gala you know. Prices are hiked all over the city right now," Pavel shrugs while accepting Abraxas's coin. "Sorry, I don't have any full books yet. And I'm afraid I can't sell this one to you, these are only loaned out to us until the Gala is over. I'm supposed to read off information about the city for you, though. Is there anything you want to know? There's tips for surviving, that's something most people like to do," he rambles.
OOC: Inventories have been updated: Abraxas - 3 gp removed, bottle of ink added Harmony - 3 gp removed, holiday card added
OOC: Lol. I like to think it actually is an 8. There are letter and number stamps in order. It goes ...5,6,7... then Jove gets ecstatic and grabs the 8, walks to the half elf, emphatically puts the stamp on the counter, and then says "One infinity sign stamp please! Oh. And some ink". And then happily pays the man.
Jove immediately pulls up his sleeves and starts stamping himself in places, marking over the already scribbles runes and symbols. He doesn't stop stamping, but does second Halsen's question. He doesn't look up, but mutters something about "trouble is just the beginning". But this muttering is throughout him repeating some archaic verses and spell descriptions in ancient languages, so it is hard for many of you to tell if this is part of his gibberish or not.
“That’s true, that’s true. I could have waited until after the celebration,” Abraxas says to the merchant. He pauses for a moment. “I have been called a snob when it comes to certain things.” He eyes Harmony’s selection of cards approvingly.
Abraxas also watches Jove mark himself and listens to Halsen’s question. It’s a good one. “Yes,” he says, “what is the most important thing to know about surviving in Waterdeep?”
"We get a lot of visitors who aren't used to the strictness of the City Watch, and you all have a lot of weapons on you," Pavel explains. "It's not forbidden or anything, but any sort of dueling among citizens is highly illegal, as is any brawling or assault. Pick a fight with those things and you'll have the whole City Watch to deal with. Oh, and there's a section here on slang used by the city watch..."
Members of the City Watch employ a sort of slang in dealing with the public. As a visitor, it behooves you to know what they mean.
“What befalls?” means “Someone tell me what’s going on here.”
“Hold!” means “Don’t move a muscle.”
“Down arms!” means “Drop your weapons.”
“Talk truth!” means “Answer me” or “Tell the whole story.”
“Robes” references the black robes — in other words, one of the magisters. “Do we need robes here?” or something similar should be taken as a threat.
OOC: Jove's inventory has been updated - 3 gp removed, monogram stamp added.
Continue any conversation with Pavel as long as you'd like, and then let me know what is next. There were a few other merchant tents set up (visiting the one with ale was briefly mentioned) and a performance from Aria Cavatina at the Cassalanter Villa.
Harmony got her holiday card, hearing the half-elf ask if they wanted to know anything about the city and surviving, thinking about that before nodding. She then watched as Jove started stamping himself and saying stuff that she definitely did not know or understand. "Why are you stamping yourself like that?" she curiously asked him, wondering if maybe it had to do with how he can use magic or something. Then she heard the half-elf comment about them having a bunch of weapons, thinking that he must mean the others since hers are all tucked away at the time because she is wearing her costume and only thought that she would simply be having fun celebrating at this Midwinter Gala. Harmony kept listening as he said that dueling, brawling or assault is illegal and that they would have City Watch to deal with if they do. Soon he told them about the slang that the city watch use, nodding as she would try to remember these for if anything should happen but hopefully wouldn't. "Okay! I'm only here to have fun after all, so it shouldn't be a problem for me! Thank you very much for all the advice and help! What is your name?" Harmony had then asked the half-elf as she bowed and smiled happily, wanting to make lots of new friends here in Waterdeep.
