THE HISTORY OF THE ETERNAL WAR
Atlas has always been a continent divided. When the first ancestors of the great races rose from the primeval mud, the gods fought to claim them as their own. Some races fell under the sway of the dark gods, such as the orcs, goblins, and giants, while others were embraced by the gods of light, such as the humans, halflings, elves, and dwarves. Driven by their respective gods, the legions of darkness and the army of light fight for dominance in a land of blood. Centuries of unceasing warfare has left little opportunity for technological advancement, and cities are few and far between. The majority of Atlas' population reside in and around castles and strongholds for maximum protection. One can scarcely travel a dozen miles without sighting an army encampment, and children battle with wooden swords before they can even walk. Razed villages and leveled towns stand grim testament to the terrible cost of war. When the dust settles and the smoke clears, only one side will claim victory.
In the Recruitment and News Thread, you will find the Hall of Heroes, Casualties of War, Recruitment Notices, and the latest news from the War Letters.
Recently, the High Magister of Abjuration has discovered a map of the Eastern Archipelago that reveals the location of an ancient city from a time when magic was highly advanced. His request to send out a military force to seize the ruins to lay claim to the magical relics of this ancient civilization has been approved, which is why you and your companions have been sailing on a fleet of five ships for about 2 days now. Your destination is an island known as Rotona Island, a large landmass about 1442 miles in length, where you hope to find the ruins of a civilization long past, hopefully abandoned.
Irostine, a rather short half-elf ranger with scuffed skin walks up to bow of the ship. While counting the arrows in his quiver, he waits for the rest of his party to assemble.
Jesl is a tall and slender human woman with straight black hair that contrasts against her pale skin. She approach Irostine and asks, "Um, excuse me. Are you on your way to the Eastern Archipelago as well? I was told I would meet some people here that I should accompany."
Having landed in port for the last time on your journey, your ship's captain, a water genasi known as Seafoam, calls out to you all, standing on the rigging of the ship. "Soldiers of Light! We set sail for the Eastern Archipelago within the hour! Say your goodbyes to dry land, 'cause it'll be about a week before you see her again!" Laughing, Captain Seafoam swung down from the rigging, and, starting to hum a sea shanty, directed her crew around the deck of her ship, The Coral Angel.
A female gnome approaches the two of you. Her clothes are made of assorted animal skins and cover very little. She carries a buckler style shield and a large battle axe made of stone. As the captain finishes she exclaims loudly “A week more?!? I thought this was supposed to be a fast ship! We’ll be lucky if our enemies have not come and gone by the time we get there!”
Irostine turns to face the both of you:"As you said, looks like we'll be stuck together on this boat journey for a while. My name is Irostine but you can call Iro." He extends a hand out, emotionless.
"Nice to meet you Iro! You may call me Saryn, as that is my name." I laugh loudly at my own joke. Then turns to the human. "And who might you be lass?"
With a slightly nervous jolt as the gnome address her "Yes, I'm Jesl Mastaqel. It nice to meet the both of you. Does anybody know if we are the only party going to Rotona, or will we have some... competition?"
Irostine looks around searching for the captain: "Likewise, I'm fairly new to this whole working together thing though, you might want to ask the captain."
Saryn bounds over and grasps Jesl’s hand in a hearty shake.
”You’re the only others I’ve met so far besides the crew and captain. But I doubt they will be aiding us once we reach our destination. But three folks used to working alone on a mission together should be fun!”
She sounds genuinely excited at the prospects.
“It would seem Iro here is an archer. I mostly just hit things till they stop hitting back with this” She hefts her large battle axe. “What is it that you do Jesl?”
After a hard gulp, Jesl responds. "Uh, I ... help those who need help, mostly through divine means, but I am familiar with this." She raises her great sword.
Dominique fumbles a bit with his straps and buckles, still trying to get used to his new outfit. It cost him a pretty penny from his own pocket, but if it meant increasing his odds at surviving his first days on the field, then it was damn well worth it. He stared at his captain for a bit. He hadn't heard of her before, but that did not mean for much. If you weren't a high admiral or general or had a high profile major achievement to boost about, then your name wouldn't be mentioned on the military academy. Doesn't mean your incapable or insignificant. Just that you weren't important enough to write a scholars manufest about.
Perhaps one day she would be. And if they mentioned her, then maybe he, Dominique Westward, would be mentioned as well. The young man looked about and sieged up the squad. Not really a seasond bunch, but eager by the looks of it. And eager was what they needed if they were going to make a name. After all, there were five ships setting sail and each carrying its own captain hoping to claim the glory.
Well, time to meet up with the gang
"Dominique Westward. Trained in tactics and your aspiring brother in arms. How's the legs holding? No seasickness I hope?"
Irostine looks up and down at Dominique: "Well met, I am Irostine, Iro for short. So far so good, I haven't been separated from land for more than a couple days though, we'll see how my stomach copes with it."
His request to send out a military force to seize the ruins to lay claim to the magical relics of this ancient civilization has been approved, which is why you and your companions have been sailing on a fleet of five ships for about 2 days now.
With a broad grin Dominique enthusiastically shakes all hands extended. "Say, if we're going to be a squad together, perhaps we should do some training together? Get a feel for each other's capabilities and know when and where to move and be able to rely on one another?" he suggests with a shrug of the shoulder, raising and lowering his hands like he is a balancing scale. "I mean we're stuck on this ship for a week or so..." he gestures to the open sea around them with nothing but waves as far as the eye can see "... so we might as well make some good use out of it. It could help us survive on the field a lot longer if we know how to work together."
(question: are the four of us an entire squad or will there be npcs taking part in our squad untill they can be traded for new pcs joining up at a later time? This is kinda important to know when designing squad tactics)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(OOC) I think we are currently docked and leaving in less than an hour but no big deal.
A large grin spread across Saryn's face. Eyeing the blade at Dom's side.
"You want to spar swordsman?!? I like the sound of that!"
She pulls the large battleaxe from her back and in the same motion takes a swing at the Half-Elf. At the last moment she shifts her hold strikes him in the gut with the handle of her weapon.

(Woops my bad! hehe, i'll modify my response)
Saryn excitedly leaps over toward the newcomer. Extending her hand and shaking his vigorously.
"Hello Dom! May I call you Dom? I'm Saryn. Legs are great; its just like camping at the top of a Great Oak. The shy one over here is Jesl."
As I let go of his hand I gesture toward Jesl and give him a shove toward her with the other hand.
