As Dominique asks his question you see Irostine squint his eyes and think as he would be clearly stepping out of his comfort zone of working with others. Before he can reply to the query, in a flash the gnome strikes as Irostine takes a step back to enjoy the show.
Irostine looks at Jesl with wide eyes and waving his hands in front of himself: "I think we should wait until we set sail for the Eastern Archipelago, we'll have plenty of time then!"
Dominique buckles over for a moment and then raises a waving hand while coughing as he tries to catch his breath. I'm OK! And yes... That too would be part of it... But I was thinking group tactics first
He straightens his back Got a strong arm little lady. I'll remember that.
Saryn immediately drops her fighting stance. With Dom doubled over he is about face to face with her. She offers out a hand to help keep him on his feet.
"I'm so sorry! You said training and I got excited and didn't think. I'd be happy to go over group tactics with you all."
She looks and sounds sincere, but also very unsatisfied and a bit unsure of the prospect of group tactics.
Its okay assures Dominique and trust me, you'll get the chance to honestly beat the living shit out of me
For now however I like to talk about With each other rather then against. I for one have no doubt that any of you could single handedly beat any orc warrior in a one on one battle. But out there he motions to some unseen battlefield far off it will not be one on one. Were going to face archers far out of your axes reach. Were gonna find goblin flanker ambushing our back line. We're gonna have to keep ourselves outnumbered five to one. Surely the first three greenskins will fall before you, but sooner or later a chopper will take out your sword arm and when that happens, you need to be able to rely on your brothers and sisters to cover your butt.
Impressed by Dominique's speech: "Very well put Dominique, we should definitely work on our squad tactics. As you may have seen I'm more of a hide in the bushes and ambush from afar type of fighter." Irostine then sits on the gunwale of the ship looking down, thinking of what he got himself into.
"As you said I rely much on my strength. I spent much of my life learning to fight and survive in the Feywild. It was there I learned how to hunt and hide, how to survive as both prey and predator."
As she says this she stows the ax and pulls a figurine from under the skins she wears hanging from a braided throng hanging around her neck. It appears to be made of bone or something similar, and haves a stylized carving of an elk.
"While I prefer my ax I do have a few weapons that I can throw if needed."
Jesl speaks up, "I don't much like fighting, but I will if pushed to. I mostly try to defend others, and I do have a limited amount if healing magic." (On that note, did Dominoque take any damage from Saryn?)
(no visible wounds, its a bruising beneath studded leather, no way to see it)
Good, same goes for me nods Dominique. I suggest that you heal me or Saryn if either of us goes down and I'll have you and Ori if either of you hits the dirt. Oh and if at any point I say something you disagree with, do speak out. I like to fancy myself an expert but in all honesty this will be my first mission on the front as well and I hold no special rank whatsoever.
With this he looks around for a brief moment for reassurance.
Now, the first thing to know about squad fighting, is that everyone has a base position. If the situation calls for it... and with this he handgestures towards Iro ...like when setting an ambush: a very good tactic that I much encourage by the way; you can deviate or even temporarily abandon the base position. However, it is called a base position for a reason. When surprised or a confrontation is a foregone fact, knowing your place helps securing the squad safety.
Dominique walks onto the deck and begins gesturing dwon at the woodwork.
Jesl and Saryn are your typical frontline fighters. The two of you would Idealy be standing close to one another with about six feet in between. Ori... he points with at the halflef in question is preferably a back-line archer. Leaving that gap in between you two gives him a clear shot down the center and coverage of your flanks. Ori, keep about ten to twelve feet between you and the frontline. Close enough so we can help youif you get ambushed, far enough to not get forced into melee. I start out besides you as a flank protector and secondary archer and move forward to close the gap in the front-line when needed. To emphasise he steps forward between the first two spots he had indicated for Jesl and Saryn.
Saryn's attention keeps wondering as Dom goes on but she does try to keep focused and act as though it all makes sense to her. When Dom starts talking about her postioin she furrows her brow abit.
"Hmm it might be good to have me a bit ahead of Jesl. I don't get hit very easily and I can take quite a few hits. Then she can be ready to heal me or take care of anything that slips past or fall back to help you. I have a few other tricks up my sleeves as well."
As she says that last bit she reaches one hand up to feel a bit of fleece lining one of the skins she wears and gives a small wave with her other hand. Suddenly a loud roar echos out just behind where Iro is standing.
"I like the cut of your gib Dominique, but my name is not Ori it's-" Irostine's sentence is cut short by a loud roar echoing from behind him as he quickly shifts and nocks an arrow to his bow. He looks at nothing with a look of confusion then realises what the gnome has done giving her a stern look.
Ah, yes, my apologies Irostine, and I do applaud your firm voice Saryn. Never seen anything quiet like it. Very well, how about a kite formation? Dominique points out four points on the deck, like this:
X XSX X DX X XJ X X X X X X X X X X X XIX X That way Iro keeps his lines of fire, Saryn can step back when the enemy pushes too hard on her and Jesl and I are close enough by that we can step up to screen her when needed or cover Iro if someone sneaks up on the backline.
Just wanted to add initiative if it was needed.
(it seems to have actually rolled no dice for the damage?)
As Dominique asks his question you see Irostine squint his eyes and think as he would be clearly stepping out of his comfort zone of working with others. Before he can reply to the query, in a flash the gnome strikes as Irostine takes a step back to enjoy the show.
Jesl pulls her greatsword in front of her in a guarding stance (taking the Dodge action) and turns towards Irostine. "Uhh..."
I was counting as an improvised weapon or an unarmend strike so just the 3. I can reroll if the DM wishes but Saryn does not want to kill him.
Irostine looks at Jesl with wide eyes and waving his hands in front of himself: "I think we should wait until we set sail for the Eastern Archipelago, we'll have plenty of time then!"

In between laughs Saryn manages to get out
“Sounds..... good”
