For the casual reader, the party has completed the Lost Mine of Phandelver module and is now in an interlude in Waterdeep before moving on to Ghosts of Saltmarsh.
In the busy city of Neverwinter, six adventures come together for a seemingly simple and low-paying job. What happens next is a tale of kidnap, mystery, conflict and lost magics; a tale that, should they survive it, will forge them into a true band of heroes. Yes really. They will be heroes, goddammit. Occasional orc torture not withstanding.
I’d like to invite six people to begin a game of Lost Mine of Phandelver, a D&D adventure set in the Forgotten Realms.
There are lots of threads for Lost Mine games on this forum; it’s considered to be a good starter game for new players and new DMs. This is my first time as a DM, and I’m looking forward to telling this story together with a group of players. I’m happy for anyone to join, but in case there are more than six people who’d like to play, I want to prioritise people who haven’t yet managed to find a place in another game, and people who are relatively new to DnDBeyond.
If you’re interested in joining, then please think about the following points:
It’s important that players can usually post once a day, sometimes two, so make sure your schedule allows for that. Of course, it’s fine if you take breaks from time to time – real life is more important - but please do tell me in advance if you can. For my part, I will do my best to make at least one substantial post each day, and usually one or two shorter posts to help move the story along.
Joining the game is a bit of a commitment to your fellow players. Play-By-Post games can take a long time and sometimes feel like they’re moving forward very slowly. My guess is that the Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure will take at least six months (actually it took a year) to finish, maybe a lot more; are you able to stick around that long?
This game will be a mix of exploring new areas, fighting monsters according to the D&D combat rules, and role-playing. Role-playing often means developing fun interactions and conversations between the players’ characters; they react to what happens to them and talk together as the adventure goes along. As this is a game aimed at beginners, you don’t need to be very confident yet at any of these things; I know I’m not. But all these skills, including role-playing, are things that anyone can learn with practice. I will do my best as DM to encourage players to role-play and provide situations where it works well.
How to Join
If you’re not familiar with D&D or DnDBeyond, and would like my help in building a character that you’ll enjoy playing, that’s fine – please just PM me to let me know you're interested (click on my picture and then choose ‘Send Private Message’, and we can chat about it through PMs.
If you’re familiar with D&D and with DndBeyond, then please send me a PM with the following information about the character you'd like to play:
Name: Race: Class: Background: Link to character sheet: Backstory/biography:
The backstory or bio should be fairly short, only one or two paragraphs, explaining where your character is from, how they became skilled in the fighting or magical skills they have, and why they have become adventurers. As the story starts in the city of Neverwinter, it would be good to talk about what you’re doing there or how you came to be there. All characters start at level one; no evil alignments please.
Beginning the Game
If there are enough people wanting to join, I hope to decide on the players by Wednesday 9th at the latest, then spend a few days discussing characters with everyone, and start the game proper on Saturday 12th next week. There will be lots more information then to help set the scene, as well as discussions about how we want to play, to use the DnDBeyond dice and other tools, and to display characters’ conversations in posts, but we can get into that as the game gets underway.
About me: I got into D&D only last year after watching Critical Role; I’ve played in a couple of great Play-by-Post games here and also some fun online games through Discord. I’m from the UK originally, but have lived in eight different countries around the world.
Thanks to everyone who's written in so far. If you're interested, then you're still very welcome to PM me, or you can post below if you prefer. As I said, I'll keep this open until Wednesday and then contact everyone. That will probably be around Wednesday 8.00pm my time (GMT+1).
I'm on my mobile right now. I know it can pull my character stats and use them. Is there a forum posting that the site made with all the PBP player actions?
Also...is there a OOC forum we'll be using for these kinds of posts as well as player introductions and the like? Just want to clarify all that before we begin in earnest.
There's a dice roller; it's at the top right of the text box - we'll use that in the main thread. People sometimes have problems using it in mobile, though it's fine for others - there's a thread that explains how it works, how to get round the problems, and where you can post practice rolls to try it out: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/play-by-post/2985-rolling-dice
For OOC, when the last member joins DnDBeyond, I'll start a group PM thread we can use to talk; depending on what we're talking about, it might make more sense to post directly in the thread, in which case we'll use the spoiler box
That explains it. My mobile web view doesn't have the feature bar in the post replies. Just means I'll have to time my posts to a desktop reply or use the desktop view in Chrome (which is ok but really small text on a phone).

I'm good to go. Though I can see now (on the die roller) that it's add your own modifiers as opposed to being tied to the character sheet. So it seems like flipping back and forth between character sheet and forum post means a desktop computer is more practical as well. Sorry...I'm talking out loud I guess. When the game starts, do we want to delete all this? If not then I apologize for adding to this forum detritus.
Just trying out the spoiler thingie but i might as well use the space to mention that due to the nature of the character sheets, it says my character is a Ganasi. While this is true, my character is unaware of it. In fact the only person aware of it is his mother. In all respects he looks like a human albeit one who looks like he's lightly cos-playing as a Ganasi.
Yesterday before dawn, three notices were posted across Neverwinter; one in the Protector’s enclave, another by the city gates, and the third in the docks, each asking for adventurers to perform a simple task – provide escort for a wagon, of supplies of no great value, a few days’ journey outside the city.
Yesterday morning, each of you in turn visited the dwarf who had posted those notices, Gundren Rockseeker. You met him in a rented backroom of the Driftwood Tavern, and he explained the job to you: you and a few others will take the wagon south along the High Road, then east towards Triboar before turning south again to the small town of Phandalin. You’ll be paid ten gold pieces each when you deliver everything to Barthen’s Provisions, a trading post there.
A human, introduced to you as Sildar Hallwinter, was looking on quietly throughout your conversation, not hostile but not friendly either – you’re not sure if he was a friend of Gundren’s or maybe worked for him.
You know that Gundren and Sildar intended to set out for Phandalin ahead of you, leaving you to follow with the slower wagon. You spent your last night in Neverwinter dealing with your own business, whatever that might be.
Today, about an hour before sunrise, the city is quiet, and you arrive at the city gate. The morning air is fresh and it promises to be a warm cloudless day. The occasional sound of window shutters being slammed open is becoming more and more frequent, as well as the shouts of protest at the sudden loud noises.
One by one you arrive at the city gate; there are torches around to light the pre-dawn gloom, and you see a somewhat young, somewhat bored dwarf waits with the wagon. You don’t know his name, but he has a piece of paper with your names on it and checks them off as you arrive.
As you arrive, please give a short physical description of how your character appears to the others. None of you have ever met before, so think about how your character will react to the others, greet them, and pass the time until the last one arrives.
It’s good to have a convention for writing speech in posts; it makes it easier for everyone to read. My suggestion is to use a colour and bold, like this:
Let’s go kill the dragon, says Kev, brandishing his sickle.
So please pick a colour that you like, that no-one’s used yet, and that’s fairly readable.
For internal dialogue/thoughts, it’s up to you; some people use italics, <others use brackets> and some don’t do anything special.
Scupper, a rather grungy and unusually mean looking halfling approaches the wagon. He wears dark leather armor and has a rapier tucked into a red sash that's strapped about his waist. He uses a dagger to pick some of breakfast's gristle from his teeth. He carries a confidence that might contradict his 3'4" frame but he would appear to take no notice of this. Scupper approaches the dwarf as he sheaths the dagger with a motion that leaves one to wonder how and where he put it. He dusts off the grime of last nights carousing and pats himself down to make sure he still has all his belongings.
You the fella I'm supposed to check in with then? Kinda young ain'cha? Couldn't be a day over 75 by the looks of ye. I'll be listed as Scupper. Two p's one e and 'nuttin to do wit tea. I hates the stuff. So this the pricey cargo we be guarding for the journey? Mind if I take a look at it? It being nothing but 'supplies of no great value' eh?
He wanders about the wagon, looking it over, but making no move to actually inspect the goods.
Just a joke me boyo! Nuttin to trifle yourself wit. You can be sure I've no interest in what I'm protecting or from whom. I'm just enjoying the idea o' being on the other side of the exchange for once.
After completing his brief inspection of the wagon, he circles the dwarf himself, looking him up and down, then leans himself casually against the fore-left wagon wheel.
You driving this beast then? Or are you more of a type to watch the watchers...keep us honest as it were?
Scupper makes himself comfortable against the wagon wheel and waits to see who else comes out of the woodwork for a job that seems about as on the level as a ship in stormy seas.
If you use a desktop view or an actual desktop computer for your browser, you'll see all the buttons for rolling (dice icon), spoiler (exclamation point) and font and paragraph formatting (as well as links, images, and more) as a menu across the top of the reply area. Mobile view for me removes all those icons and formatting options.
I'm using Chrome so I can go into the browser menu and switch to desktop view, but that does make for tiny text since it's showing me a desktop screen at mobile size.
Good morning Gents.. and lady greets Varinth. Name is Varinth but most call me Vaz, and this here is the lovely Soodi. He gestures to the mottled one hump camel slowly masticating behind him, who looks at the gathering party with a subtle mix of disdain and boredom.
Varinth is a short young man with a shock of red hair sticking up from his head as though gravity wasn't looking. His skin is a little ashen but that could be from the hangover he is obviously experiencing (the smell is a giveaway). Some sort of fiery tattoo peaks out from the top of his jerkin and curls round his jawline as well as over his left hand. His jerkin and over-sized pants make him looks as though he plans to attend a child's sleepover albeit one that involves magical symbols.
I shall take the rear if no one objects Vaz says as he unstraps a frighteningly large wine skin from Soodis saddle.
As I mentioned before but some may have missed, Varinth, and most who meet him, believe he is human. Soodi knows better but doesn't really care.
Scupper, says the dwarf in a bored tone, not even looking at the halfling as he makes a mark on his paper. Nothing valuable, just some things needed in Phandelin.
He gets visibly nervous as Scupper circles him; one hand starts to tremble and he snatches it with the other, then clasps both hands behind his back. He relaxes - a little - as the halfling moves away, and answers: Errr, I, errr, won't be going with you. I, uhm, am here for this. He holds up the paper. To write it down. Write down that you went, I mean. That you left the city on time. He puts the paper back down, and tries to avoid attracting Scupper's attention.
Varinth, he says as Varinth arrives, making a mark on his paper. And camel. He makes another mark and wrinkles his nose, but makes no comment.
Asher, an average sized human wearing silver chainmail armor and a deep blue kimono over his armor tied only around the neck and flowing in the light breeze slowly walks toward the wagon, kicking small rocks in the dirt as he makes his way. His giant glaive attached to a holster on his back and is frizzy brown hair is tied back. He casually saunters over, looking the wagon up and down, seeing Varinth and Scupper, but staring no longer than a moment. He eyes the dwarf and gives a nod, "Mornin' bitesize".
Across from the gate Strix gives up trying to balance on the end of his staff, tries to smooth back his hair, takes a couple of tentative steps and then darts towards the dwarf, pulling up a little too close and leaning down to mutter Beartrap sent mebefore stepping back, spreading his arms wide with staff akimbo, crouching to establish dominance and trilling. It's nice to feel tall. He cocks his head slightly, dislodging some of the wilder wings of his short tawny mane that he'd so carefully tidied to make a good impression, but leaves them well enough alone. Well, if the wino got hired, the bar is pretty low.
The Halfling might be worth something to someone. But look at those tiny legs! Hardly any fun at all. Smoothing down his disheveled peasant shirt and trees, he proffers a splayed hand and tries not to worry about how long it's been since he last spoke to someone. "Strix. I find things. Hoo...hoo...who are you?
The sound of the camel chewing proves too distracting, his head rotating far enough to look physically painful as he tries to identify the sound. nice beast. Spensive. Stolen?
The dwarf watches Asher approach, freshly-inked pen at the ready; as the human speaks, the dwarf's mouth opens, then closes and opens, as he appears unsure what to say in response to this greeting. He finally settles for Morning. Name?
As Strix comes up and leans in to speak into his ear, the dwarf flinches, and then seems to remember something. Oh,yes, that's right. Errr, name, um, please. Oh, Strix. Right. Sorry. He seems completely confounded by the crouching and trilling, and tries to move away, but with one step backwards he bumps into the wagon. Ow. He appears to write Strix's name on the paper, rather than just making a mark.
The sky is getting lighter; it will be dawn soon. Two members of the Neverwinter Guard walk by on patrol; they eye the five individuals scattered around the wagon for a moment, but move on.
Vaz casually feeds his camel a large misshapen onion while taking a large swig of what can only be cheap wine by the stains it leaves on Varinths face.
Addressing Soodi If I fall asleep just keep following the wagon My Dear. He scratches Soodi behind the ear and clumsily climbs onto Soodis saddle which, unlike most, is located in front of the hump. By the looks of the jury rigged saddle this is to aid in the aforementioned napping. There are no reins.
Soodi slowly stands while Vaz gets himself comfy. Soodi munching on the onion is rather audible.
Asher looks at the one called Strix and squint his eyes. (Side note: Was it ever said what race he is? I couldn't find it above.) "The name is Asher." He says to Gundren. "Look, don't take this the wrong way, not that I particularly care, but I hope you get put in a lot of danger and really soon. The more beasts that taste my glaive the better." Asher then staresat the camel in its eyes, trying not to blink before the camel.
The dwarf ticks off another name on his paper. The most dangerous thing I plan to do today is eat my sister's cooking. Good luck on the road, I'm sure you'll find some badgers and skunks to skewer with that thing. He eyes the glaive warily.
You can make an Investigation check or Nature check to try to identify Strix's race.
You met Gundren yesterday but he's already gone ahead along the road; you don't really know who this young dwarf is, and he hasn't offered his name. He is standing by the wagon as though he belongs there, and he has a paper with your names on.
If Asher would like to enter into a staring contest with Soodi the Camel, make a Constitution check.
is this how you do spoilers?
No. This is
Maybe I should have come up with some deep seated character secret to put in the tags first. Opportunity missed!
Can you predefine common rolls in settings , like init, hit or damage? Square brackets are a pain on mobile
Edit. Nope, editing doesn't show you the tags. Ok, I'll avoid using spoilers .
Hit roll : 18
Trying really hard hit roll : 25
