Dario chuckles at the Scupper as he watches him crawl up onto the wagon. He shakes his head and walks over and stands next to the driver's board. "It's not the first I heard that complaint, but sometimes I wonder maybe it's the other way around and everyone else is rushing along too fast in life."
Dario scratches his mud caked face and looks up in the sun."It's a fine day to go hunting."
Asher turns to Dario. "The camel has a watchful eye. A good trait for a companion. How many of these missions, or whatever you want to call them, have you done?"
Upon having Scupper speak to Asher, he stands up and lifts the halfling into the air, much like a puppy dog. "Scupper. Fitting name."
Scupper is caught completely unawares as he finds himself hoisted high.
Ye blasted idjit! Ye get one. Now put me down nice and easy.
Once back on the driver board, Scupper smiles a bit more at ease.
Now don’t go on thinking me some happy little hillborn, what’s eatin’ tea and cakes and laughing o’r the barley wine. I left them inhospitable wee gobshites for a reason. I’m all for a laugh but none of that tossing the halfling about…
Scupper’s smile takes on a dark turn for a moment that assures he means it.
He looks at Dario after regaining his composure. Now I've got the sneaking suspicion you're likely to be the moral foundation of this group so's I'd like to offer you my sincere promise not to rob or kill no-one on that list that yon dwarf holds...even that odd looking hunchback horse with the beady eyes or this handsy human. And o'course I'm sure enough willing to respect the vote should any new names gets added. We can be clear my moral compass has well learned its own true north but I ain't never been one t' show disloyalty to fellow crew-mates. Rest assured, my former career had its share of rules and laws... though anyone could be forgiven for not knowing that. I only say that to put at ease anyone such as yourself who's used to working with a more professional lot hehe. I tend to think ol' Rockseeker knew the type o’ crew he was putting together.
I think we should clarify early on that in PBP (a written narrative like this) it's considered difficult if we create actions that include another player by simply writing that it happened. Normally such actions would create a whole slew of possibilities like rolling to grapple if done without consent. I've also seen them devolve into PVP or just weird narrative once everyone could write anything involving other players and make it so.
Dario watches and shakes his head as Asher lifts Scupper and then places him down. He looks up at Asher standing in the wagon. "I've done only one run. So I'm not going to pretend I know what we're going to encounter. I just hope we're were just as lucky."
Dario turns Scupper and says "and I hope you're right about Rockseeker and his choice in men and I thank you for your reassurance to do no harm to our party."Dario smiles and the others notice his white teeth are the only thing clean about him.
Agreed. In low-stakes situations where you've all generally agreed a course of action, or it's not likely to be controversial, it's fine to say 'We all move towards the cave mouth', for example. But usually it makes more sense to leave it to the DM to narrate what actually happens. Occasionally, I may ask you to go back and edit posts if I think something played out in a very different way than you described, and I hope that's okay with everyone - I doubt it will come up very often.
You're right, sorry. PbP is a little different than regular play. I'll roll for athletics to grapple: 20 if I succeed then the above happens, if I fail then we can play that out.
If Scupper mamages to avoid being lifted, Asher's eyebrows raised impressed.
And I hope we encounter a bath or a clear stream in our future haha
No big deal but it can get out of hand. If I wrote that I stole everyone's money and was off to the side already counting it...I'm guessing some folks would have expected a roll or two.
Also, as a rogue, I'm just clarifying in my speech to Dario that I am not interested in thieving or fighting party members. I know this can be a concern with a rogue/pirate in the party ;)

Okay, Scupper, if you want to attempt to resist the grapple, make a Acrobatics or Athletics check.
Just a note, I'm much better on a desktop that my phone. And I'm on my desktop from 8-5 Monday through Thursday and I check D&DBeyond religiously, so I will be much more active then. Though I'm sure it might be the opposite for some of you.
Without really thinking about it Varinth starts fiddling with the straps holding his wineskin.
I wonder if the wee pirate has rum in that pack. Maybe i'll casually bring it up. I hope none of the Trappers are out early this morning walking into town. I don't even know what day it is... Feck It, i'll have another drink.
With your Animal Handling skill Vaz, you have a decent knowledge of horses, and you've travelled with a camel for some time. You know that horses, if they're unfamiliar with camels, will be unhappy and hard to control if the camel comes too near. It will likely take some time and effort to get them sufficiently used to the camel for this not to be a problem; this is something you might do on the journey south.
In practice, the person driving the wagon will need to make an animal handling check, which under normal circumstances isn't hard because these are well-trained horses, but if Soodi is within 15 feet, the difficulty will be higher.
Thinking the fillies look well trained but perhaps not too worldly Vaz decides not to push things on the first day. He will make sure to keep Soodi at a distance for now.
My apologies for joining so late! I'm usually pretty busy on weekends, but I'm chained to a desk Mon-Fri 9am-6pm EST so I'll be posting much more in that time frame. I'll get an introduction post up in the next hour or so.
A young wood elf woman approaches the assembled motley crew. She moves with a willowy grace, slightly accentuated with the natural prowl of a predatory creature. Fairly tall for an elf, and lean like most of her race, she has dark hair tied in a tight braid that is thrown over one shoulder. Her hair is adorned with several feathers and painted beads that click quietly as she regards each of you. Emerald green eyes scan the wagon as well, squinting slightly at the ongoing antics. She sports facial tattoos worked in blue ink that travel down her neck and presumably the rest of her body, the patterns continuing down to her midriff and the parts of her legs that aren't covered by a simple suit of hide armor, dyed a forest green, and simple, soft-soled leather hunting boots that reach to mid-thigh. On her back is a quiver full of arrows and a longbow, similarly adorned with beads and feathers. On one hip a simple scimitar, and strapped to her off-hand is a small wooden shield. Everything about her says she's not from these parts, especially such a metropolitan area as Neverwinter, yet she doesn't seem uncomfortable in the city, like many other wood elves might be. Finally, she speaks in a calm, serene voice:
"Greetings. I am known in these parts as Mistweaver. I was told to meet my fellow travellers here, as well as the wagon we will be escorting. I believe I am in the right place?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Vaz:
Morning Miss says Varinth.
My name is Varinth, please call me Vaz. Under my bum is the Dreadful Dromedary of Doom, Soodi (I kid, she's a bunny). Over on the wagon already is our Illustrious Sell-sword Master Asher. He gestures dramatically. And with him, the shorter gentleman with the fabulous accent is Mr Scupper. Over here, standing at a rather odd angle, is the mysterious Mister Strix and last but never least, I'm sure, is fellow pointy person, the dutiful Dario.
Varinth bows awkwardly while sitting on a camel. How'd I do Gents?
Sure and that's not gonna be yer best performance on what's to be our illustrious stage there Vaz but you did get all the names right, lad.
The pirate halfling turns his attention to the new arrival
Mistweaver, is it, lass? A pleasure I'm sure. You'll be wanting this uncomfortable looking dwarf to sigh heavily and check your name off as he did us all and then I'm thinking we'll be ready to shove off and set sail...so to speak. He'll be glad to be rid of us. Ha!
Moradin be praised, says the rather harried-looking dwarf standing next to the wagon, right on cue. He makes a mark on his paper, then folds it and stuffs it into a pocket, grabs a bottle of ink from the wagon, seals it and does the same. And I, he adds, am done. Good luck to you all, safe travels and all that, please don't dally on the way to Phandalin. There's feed for the horses in the back with the other supplies, the camel will have to take care of itself. There's also some trail rations for you, if you have nothing better. Oh, and he reaches into another pocket, draws out two different folded pieces of paper and hands it to Mistweaver, as she is nearest to him. Gundren also said to give you this, and you might need this at the gate. With that, he nods to the group and takes off running down the street back into the city.
As Mistweaver arrived, dawn finally broke and the sky is a cloudless blue; the temperate is still cool, but will begin to rise soon. You see carts and riders on the street leading from your meeting spot by the walls towards the gate and out of the city; the road isn't busy yet, but it soon will be. It's time to head off.
Mistweaver, if you inspect the two items you were given, one is a letter with a Rockseeker stamp from Gundren, mentioning that this is a wagon of his supplies intended for Barthen's Provisions in Phandalin. It doesn't mention any of the group by name, but refers to a 'band of mercenary guards' who will be travelling with the wagon, and asks the authorities to aid their journey where appropriate. The other paper is a map of the Sword Coast; the same one you can see on the campaign screen. You can keep the documents or pass them to another character, but someone should note down in their inventory that they have a 'letter from Gundren' and a 'Sword Coast map'. In the wagon amongst all the supplies Asher finds two packs of ten Rations (1 day) marked as 'for the escort team'.
The wagon (more of a cart really) has a seat at the front for the driver, and a passenger seat next to it if someone wants to take that. There's space in the back with the supplies for a maximum of two people to sit. Everyone else will need to walk, in which case please let me know where you'll be in relation to the wagon - ahead, behind, to the left or right etc. The driver should give me an Animal Handling check and at least one other person a Perception check as you watch the road and surrounding countryside for potential threats or points of interest. Vaz, if you're going to try to get the horses used to Soodi, that will take your full attention, and please also make an Animal Handling check. If anyone would like to do anything else during the journey, just let me know.

Good point Felixfelix, I hadn't thought of that.

It's all good. I'm not worried about playing that out. We'll just say you caught Scupper completely unawares this time ;)
Just a bump on my roll with the horse(s)
