The Story So Far:
"In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker has asked you to bring a wagon load of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days' travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found "something big," and that he'd pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen's Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Haliwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to "take care of business."
You and a band of others hired by Gundren are escorting the cart southwards down the High Road. The cart, pulled by two of Gundrens finest oxen, is full with a range of mining supplies and food. Among them are a dozen sacks of flour, several casks of salted pork, two kegs of strong ale, shovels, picks, and crowbars, and five lanterns with a small barrel of oil.
The going has been easy so far and as you all sit around the camp fire that night, it gives you a chance to trade stories and get to know each other. Another days ride lies ahead of you and while you've encountered no trouble so far, this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail."
(OOC: Feel free to spend time getting to know your fellow travellers. When it is time to head off in the morning I will move the story on. The cart will need a driver and you are free to decide amongst you who will take the reins for the next day, who will ride in the cart and who will walk alongside/ in front/ behind.
"The campfire crackles loudly under the trees of Neverwinter Wood. Gundrens hired band sit quietly around the fire, eating the last few bites of their meal. While they have been introduced in name only, so far there has been an uneasy silence on the trail. A slight breeze swirls a few embers up and into the air until they disappear into the starry sky. One speaks to break the silence..."
As Beetlejuice Is finishing his meal he asks, “So Serak, being a Bard, who are usually travelers, is there anything you can enlighten me with about this area? I am not from around here and do not know much of the lore. Besides song my friend, what else do you specialize in? I myself am pretty handy with a sword and going toe to toe with my enemies.” Beetlejuice finished his meal now and settles in to get a bit of rest before heading out in the morning.
Serak: Lighting his tobacco pipe with an ablaze twig pulled from the campfire, Serak eyes the Paladin with mock suspicion from beneath the hood of his cloak.
Somehow blowing a smoke ring as he speaks, Serak answers, "I know nothing of these lands nor her people, oh righteous Paladin. Now let's not start out this friendship with an interrogation, my fine fellow. Let's just say my skills are... unique and their worth shall be proven with deed, not word."
“Oh was not picking on or criticizing, I was hoping to learn something of the area and what dangers we may face. As for your skills, I it was not an interrogation, I just like to know what my ompanions are capable of, it help me do my job of keeping everyone safe”
Serak: Pulling out a pack of playing cards from his pack, Serak lowers his hood, revealing the proof of his half-elven ancestry.
With a flourish, Serak bows gracefully and seats himself before the fire. "No offense taken, sir. One can never be too careful when in the business of adventure!"
"Now sit and have a game of cards with me. No ante, of course. I know how your type frowns upon gambling." With a sly wink, Serak begins dealing out the cards.
Turning to the others in the camp, he announces, "Room for a few more, if anyone is feeling sociable?"
OOC: Bettlejuice, it is written in the DND Bible that the Rogue must give the Paladin a hard time and get away with as much immoral behavior behind his back as possible. It is RPG holy rite, so I hope you don't take offense or think that I am. That being said he is chaotic/good so he only lies, cheats and steals for the greater good. heh
Beetlejuice plays several hands of cards with Serak while the 2 discuss where we will be heading soon. Beetle also ponders what evil he will be able to stamp out in hopes it will keep at bay the evil demonic pact forces slowing creeping into his soul.
Serak: Leaning slightly away from the Paladin, "So...which of the Gods did you say you serve again?
"Ahem! Anyway... to answer your previous question; I'm quick on my feet, quiet as a mouse and fight equally well with rapier, crossbow and bardic magic. I'm skilled at finding and disarming traps and locked doors and chests are no obstacle to me. For lawful adventuring purposes only, of course."
He finishes with a wry grin as he deals out another hand, waiting to see if the others would like to join.
Zyltris Holimion: “Greetings to you both, Serak and Beetlejuice. I, Zyltris, am pleased to make your acquaintance. I hope to prove my worth to you both. My short life thus far has been one of chaos as I have been running from the lord of my land. I aim to one day clear my name and justify my town8s faith in me.
Serak: Dealing out an extra hand, Serak greets the Elf warrior, "Well met, Zyltris. Come, join us."
Taking a puff from his pipe, Serak says, "So, the hometown hero sworn one day to return and enact swift justice upon an evil lord! A classic tale! I'll pen the ballad myself one day, should you succeed upon your quest, my friend!"

“That will be a ballad worth hearing I reckon.” Beetlejuice studies his cards thinking about the part he can play in that ballad. “Yes, i’m Sure with my friend Serak here writing it, it will be quite a ballad.”
Beetlejuice after losing the 10 straight hand to Serak says, "Well played my friend. I am glad we did not wager on this game as I seem to be very, very bad at it. Anyhow I think I am going to get some rest before we head out in the morning, who knows what the road to Barthens Provisions in Phandelin holds for us. I've heard there has been quite a bandit infestation lately on shipments." With that Beetlejuice sets out his bed roll and settles in for the night. Latly he says "Whoever is last to go to sleep wake me and I will take watch."
As Zyltris looks out over the camp he agrees to take the first watch. “I can wake you when trouble arises as I am sure it will. We should be ready for anything.”
“The night passes by without incident, with only the occassional crackle from the fire and rustling leaves in the breeze breaking the silence. As the brightness of the full moon fades away beyond the horizon and is drowned out by the morning sun, the camp slowly reawakens. Beetlejuice, still standing watch beside the cart has a half tired look in his eyes.
A few hours later the cart is back trundling southwards along the High Road. Ahead the road forks away to the east. Signposted for Phandalin. The company makes the turn from the well worn main road and follows the fresher grassy trail. A cold ominous wind blows from the sea, sending chills through the party. The sun beating down from high overhead.”
OOC: Please discuss between yourselves who will be where around the cart for the remainder of the journey. The cart needs at least one person to drive the two Oxen, the others can be positioned as they please. Phandalin is about half a days ride away..
Beetlejuice is enjoying the cold breeze from the ocean, as being in armor in the hot sun can get, well pretty hot. He is walking to the non ocean side of the cart, pretty much just at the end of the oxen and where the cart start, as he keeps pace. "Little cool but the breeze is nice opposed to just the sun heating up my armor. How are you guys doing? We have a bit to go til Phandalin still." As Beetle walks he has his shield in hand as usual and his sword is ready to be drawn at a moments notice.
OOC: might edit this a bit once I know where everyone else is located, but basically that is what I am doing at the moment, walking beside the cart, scanning the surroundings and ready for anything."
Serak: Awakening feeling refreshed, Serak prepares for another day of marching by strapping on his well-oiled studded leather, sharpening his rapier and checking his crossbow string.
Having grown up on the streets of the city of Athkatla, Serak has no experience with animals or vehicles and so leaves driving the wagon to another.
He takes marching position at the front of the cart, directly opposite Beetlejuice, scanning the horizon for trouble.
Should he see anything strange or dangerous in the distance, he'll scout ahead silently under cover of wood or tall grass and report back to the group what he discovers.
Serak: Locking a bolt into the slide of his hand crossbow, Serak addresses the group.
"Good morn, my fellow guardians of the cart! Beetlejuice, I'm doing quite well, thank you for asking. Zyltris, I trust you're doing well also?"
"Seems our druid friend may be a touch antisocial? Such is the way with wood-friends, I suppose. Can one be blamed for enjoying the company of nature and animals over people?"
