Gundrens face flushes a shade of crimson - a mixture of frustration and shame. "Well... I'm afraid I'm not sure. I've been bound and blinded since leaving that castle... and I'm not exactly fluent in goblin. I was here alone for.... well a good few hours at least before I heard you coming.... mumpphleeemurmf" Suddenly very aware of his surroundings, Serak thrusts an open palm over the dwarfs mouth.
On the edge of his sight, the bard catches a twinkle in the firelight. Metal and bright eyes. Syna tightens his grip on his quarterstaff, now also seeing the sudden danger. A low howl echoes in the night air, quickly followed by a burst from the undergrowth.
OOC: Sadly I don’t have time to put up the area map right now. Assuming everyone is around Gundren? Serak and Arkhan are at least. I’ll roll initiatives ASAP too
Serak: Startled by the sudden ambush, Serak curses himself for becoming so distracted by a hairy old Dwarf. Offering Gundren the Dagger he used to cut his bindings, the Bard shouts, "Defend yourself!"
Reaction: Cutting Words - Anyone hit by 4 or less. Reduce damage of Critical Hits and Killing Blows.
OOC: BrownBeard, have you spoken to Syna recently? He would have leveled up too and a Spike Growth or Entangle would be awesome right now. lol
OOC: Welcome back, Beetlejuice. Hope you had a good time on your trip. We somehow found Gundren already, but Serak rolled badly on Perception and here we are. lol
BrownBeard, I think it would be better if you continue to control Syna. An Entangle or Spike Growth would probably be his first move anyway, but he needs to be leveled up too, and I don't feel comfortable doing that.
Edit: Forgot to ask - are these Hobgoblins wearing metal armor too? Bows or metal weapons?
I’ll be away tomorrow so its unlikely I’ll get a chance to get through everything. I’m not exactly comfortable with levelling Syna either but with luck he’ll appear soon - otherwise we’ll push on.
Unfortunately for them the hobgoblins are dressed in chain mail and carry longsword and longbows. The goblins have leather, short bows and scimitars as usual.
OOC: Syna I’ve levelled you up, but feel free to make Any changes.
Reacting fastest to the ambush, Syna immediately flicks a wrist to his right. A wolfs house becomes a sharp yelp as the ground beneath it churns, revealing twisted thorns as they emerge from the soil. A sudden volley of arrows burst from the surrounding tree line, as if in retaliation. The first making a beeline for the alert druid.
A split second later, a second arrow bursts from the trees, tearing through the air towards Serak, narrowly missing the confused Gundren.
Goblin 2 Attack Roll: 9
Serak manages to spin away just in time, catching a glimpse of Syna staggering slightly as the first arrow punctures his side. A third bursts from the treeline to the parties left, ringing out as it strikes Beetles armour.
Goblin 3 Attack Roll: 19 Damage: 11
Beetle reels backwards from the blow. The arrow somehow managing to find purchase in the armours surface. Up ahead a goblin emerges from behind the cave, aims a fourth arrow and fires at Gundren. Goblin 4 Attack Roll: 19 Damage: 6
The dwarf yells out in pain. His cries muffling the sound of the yell that echoes from the wood - words in clear common. “SURRENDER YOU SCUM!” Without warning a fifth arrow burst from the north, tearing through the air towards Arkhan.
Goblin 5 Attack Roll: 16 Damage: 6
The arrow plunges in the dragonborns side. Slightly shell shocked the party glance around for their hidden attackers. The first of the wolves lunges forwards towards Beetle. Leaving a long trail of thick drool hanging in the air as it pounces.
Wolf 1 Attack Roll: 8
Relying on his own brute strength, Beetle pushes the wolf aside and reaches for Talon. From the woods to the south the second of the wolves charges forwards, stepping gingerly through the thorny ground.
Thorn Damage:12
The wolf emerges, bloodied and limping. It snarls loudly, leaping mid stride towards Serak.
Wolf 2 Attack Roll: 21 Damage: 6
Serak Strength Save: 11
The wolfs weight catches Serak off guard, forcing him to the floor. Hot, damp breath warms the bards face, filling his nostrils with the scent of rotten meat.
Panicked by the ambush, Gundren helplessly stares at the blade in his hand. Instinctively he lashes out at the wolf beside him.
Gundren Attack Roll: 6
The blade fumbles in the dwarfs hand, as he struggles to calm his nerves. A feeble scream leaks from beneath his bushy red beard, helpless to the situation.
22,19,24,9,13,17,
OOC: Serak that’s your turn. I didn’t take your reaction spell that time, (a: I’d missed it in the first attack, b: at the second Crit it was a difficult choice.) I’m happy for you to choose when to take your reaction this time round.
This one might be a little tricky, but I have faith in you guys. No map atm but if you need one I can draw one up later on!
Stomping footprints shake the ground to the south as the lead hobgoblin makes his way forward. Aggressive grunts broken by soft whimpers as thorns penetrate its boots.
Thorn Damage: 17
The hobgoblin emerges from the undergrowth, it’s legs bloodied and torn open. As it reaches for a javelin the beasts legs buckle, sending it crashing to the floor into a pool of blood.
Across the clearing, a second wave of footsteps break free from the forest. Arkhan turns to face the approaching foe, just in time to spot a long metallic spear soaring towards him.
The javelin strikes the golden Dragonborn squarely in the stomach, bursting open the sorcerers armour. With a grunt of pain, Arkhan pulls the javelin free, snapping it with a single strong hand.
OOC: Arkhan time for your retaliation. No idea where these crits have decided to come from! The second hobgoblin is currently 10ft Sw of the campfire. You also have a wolf 5ft to your right.
OOC: Hobgoblin 1 died from thorns. Don’t think there are Multiple grouped enemies in a straight line from you. Goblins are still technically hidden again so attacks against are at D/A.
Arkhan starts to curse in draconic and then primordial as he pulls the javelin out of his gut. resisting the urge to throw it back he puts his hands together and slowly pulls them apart and arching between his fingers are dancing bolts of lightning he spins his hands and pulls both back before thrusting his hands forward releasing a witch bolt at the Hobgoblin2 that harmed him.

Gash- Lvl14 Goblin Wizard - The High Court of the Aasimar Queen
OOC: Sorry Arkhan I didn't realise that damage had floored you! You had 15 damage from the last fight and I dont think you'd healed since. It's a death save from you I'm afraid.
Also Beetle, you do have Shield as your reaction if you wished to use it earlier!
Syna also needs to make a concentration check to keep the thorns in place, I'll make that at the start of the next round - my mistake
OOC: Actually Beetle, I don’t think even your shields AC bonus is enough to stop the goblin attack that last round. That damn critical! Probably better to save your charge for your next reaction.
Talons steel rings out as it swings harmlessly past the snarling wolf. Beetle grunts with a mixture of pain and frustration, tightening his grip for his next attack.
Syna Constitution Save: 21
Wincing as he pulls an arrow from his side, losing his contraction as the shaft falls free. The thorns littering the first floor subside, lifting a weight from the druids mind. As his mind clears, he becomes aware of a goblin hiding in the brush. “Goblin in the trees!” he yells as he reaches to his left, thrusting his fingers upwards. To the north, a wide circle of ground begins to churn, turning the forest floor into a mess of thorns.
With a twang of a bowstring, another arrow is released from the bow of the now visible goblin, again towards Syna.
Goblin 1 Attack Roll: 5
Goblin Stealth Roll: 7
Ducking away, Syna manages to avoid the strike. Switching his gaze back to the treeline, the Druid struggles to spot his attacker as it disappears into the darkness.
Goblin 2 Attack Roll: 22 (Adv. Hidden)
Goblin 4 Attack Roll: 18
From the northeast, another flurry of arrows whistle through the air towards Serak. The bard dodges the first, spinning to the side but into the path of the second.
Goblin 4 Damage: 6
Goblin 2 Stealth Roll: 14
The arrow plunged into Serak shoulder, sending a chunk of leather armour spinning through the air.
As he throws the wolf aside, a glint if light catches Beetles eye. Two arrows soaring towards him.
The arrows pummel into Beetles side, denting his armour, bruising his body. Allowing his gaze to trace the arrows to the source, the paladin struggles to spot his attackers in the trees.
With its prey distracted the first of the wolves lunges towards Beetle once more.
Wolf 1 Attack Roll: 23
For the second time, Beetle raises an arm and batters away the ferocious beast. Teeth harmlessly crunch against chain mail as the wolf is forced back, digging its claws into the earth as it lands.
Across the campsite, the other wolf lunges forwards a second time at the bard.
Wolf 2 Attack Roll: 7
Wolf 2 Damage: 10
Serak Strength Save: 0 Save DC: 11
Teeth clamp onto the bards arm as the wolf’s weight topples him onto the ground for a second time. A splash of warm blood hits Seraks face. Wrenching himself free, the bard rolls to his side, desperate to find his feet.
Seizing another opportunity, Gundren takes a second swipe at the wolf beside him. Dagger in hand, he thrusts the blade firmly downwards.
Gundren Attack Roll: 12 Damage: 4
Gundrens dagger plunges into the wolfs fur, finding purchase in the beasts back. Triumphant the dwarf withdraws his blade, a faint line of red streaked across the steel.

OOC: No surprise round as Serak spotted the ambush.
Goblins however were not spotted so are still hiding. They will have advantage on their first attack.
Treeline will offer half cover (+2AC)
