"Block your passage, Dread Lord? Do you seek to enter our warrens? I am afraid they are too small for one so great. We sought only to discourage these birthers from entering. The birthers from the dens here and the village hunt us, and we must be aware to protect the young and eggs. Had this one," he says pointing to Ogzank, "been more aware of you, we would not have treated you and your servants so. How may we serve?"
Darwin steps to the forefront of the group. Letting his cold breath out into the open air as his eyes become the vertical slits of his ancestors. "We do not wish you harm, only knowledge. Why do they hunt you? Do you attack to defend yourselves only or are you attempting to gain ground?" Darwin keeps glancing over his shoulder at his "Servants" Looking for any kind of direction.

“My lord, we were not certain of the kobold involvement when we came upon the mystery of the empty farmstead. Perhaps there is more going on here than was readily apparent. A show of good faith by informing you of the fate of the farmers, and the location of the tower would be enough to grant them your blessing before we move on.”
"Attack us? It has always been so," Ogzank exclaims with hatred in his voice.
"Quiet, Ogzank, he tests us," retorts the elder, though there is a shift in his eyes. "Though I can not say the truth of this Dread Lord, my before claimed the world was different. There were no birthers, only the Dragons, the first Children of the Dragon, the Second Children and reptiles. We served Ximarth of the Frozen Lightening, silver where his scales and his wings the blue of the ice. We lived in warrens and served our Lord, and his chosen First Children as required. My before claimed that we were a small outpost of a larger tribe and one night the warrens filled with glowing fog. The next morning the tunnels where all sealed, as if never dug. Never have we been able to find the rest of the tribe, or Ximarth. But when we came to the surface we encountered the birthers.
"In the beginning, we did not know them, though they seemed to know us and took to hunting us. We learned quickly to avoid the remote dens, and the warren they call a 'village'. Some in every warrior generation wish to make war with the birthers, such as Ogzank. Now, we forage by their dens for the animals which escape and wander in the night, or the wild animals."
Listening to Horus' question, the elder tilts his head, but answers to Darwin, "For a turning of the seasons and 4 moons, some of the birthers have disappeared. Often, they return after a a part of the turning of the moon, sometimes two. But never after a third. When the third has come, we take the animals and plants which the wolves and wild dogs and small animals have not taken. Those that return are not so good at keeping their plants and animals, and are left to wander or the plants to die. It has been a good time for the tribe and we have grown. This makes Ogzank bold."
"This," he says pointing at the ruin, "is the only tower we know of, and it has been this way since the world changed."
“My lord, it appears wisdom has won out.” Horus bows his head towards Darwin.
”These are good people who are doing the best they can. Give them some hope before we continue our journey, or see if they will allow us to rest inside?”
Andolin clears his throat and speaks up, “My..lord... the prophecy we were told of. Perhaps these fine beings will allow us to look around the tower a bit?”
"Look as you wish, we will ware you of the traps."
Investigation of the tower will reveal only a small entrance in the stones of the northeast corner which leads down to their warren (besides some nasty traps, which the Kobolds warn you of. Only Seraphina is small enough to enter.
As this adventuring group seems to have come to an end, I will be deactivating the campaign. I had fun while it lasted, you where a great group for learning to be a DM via PbP.
For those who want to know WTH was going on... feel free to read the spoiler...
Again, thanks and best wishes on adventuring
The Tavern was initially just going to be used to transport you to a more remote area of the Forgotten Realms, but I quickly foresaw the problems in tying together several modules from 1st Edition (they never really tied together well anyway). Instead, I used it to transport all of you to a pocket universe, built somewhat on the principles of the old Sid & Marty Krofft show "Land of the Lost". I tied that together with the concept of a "shattered" reality. As you completed each adventure, you would release the reality, reducing the burden on the pocket universe's "power".
In this case the "Guardians" (represented by the burned out perimeter crystals, and playing a similar role to the Pylons) would be able to begin the healing process. All of this would be tied to the "Lady" in the White Tower (influenced by the Childlike Empress from "Never-ending Story". The "Lady" was actually a VERY powerful pre-Fey, as in the Mother Goddess of all Fey, who had created this pocket to protect a Living/Sentient Forest.
The plan was to lead you through a number of 1st Edition modules, with some personalized sub-quests, to a final confrontation with the "Prisoner". The characters would be faced with several possible outcomes on learning of the Prisoner's identity, Xinivrae: 1) Free her to prey upon the FR and free the pocket universe, 2) Leave her and the universe as is, and 3) Confront Xinivrae and risk releasing her upon the pocket universe, that the Lady would not have the strength to defend 4) Confron and defeat Xinivrae.
3 Side quests where currently in play (with more to be developed):
Horus - Unbeknownst to all, even him, his Imp is a servant of one of Xinivrae's former lieutenants who wishes her released after having defeated the Lady and taking the power to unseat Malcanthet. The Imp would attempt to influence Horus, and thus the party, into achieving its goals.
Andolin - As his relationship with the Guardian grows, via possession of the Amulet, he would eventually be offered a place in the pocket universe as Guardian of the Tower and Consort to the Lady, or to return where he will likely be hunted by Queens of the Seelie and Unseelie courts (being now a threat to both thrones)
Darwin - Pockets of Kobolds due exist here, and they all have one prophesy in common, "A child of the Dragon will free you and rise to become your God, or will destroy all." So, in the end, Darwin would be faced with the decision to become a demi-god to Kobolds on a distant world as a (Herculean-like) demi-god forever exiled from his home and people, or to bring about the destruction of the Kobolds existing in this realm
