Sapphire waters swallow this area of the world like rippling glass, their turquoise presence expanding in an unending trance. Sirens sing of depths as enchanting as they are untouched.
Green mountains pierce the sky, peaks capped with virgin snow. Land stretches from these peaks into old islands, their history entangled with the forests they nourish.
Where the jungles gives rest, where the coasts provide shelter, civilization stirs again. In the year 1000 of the 4th Age, people strive to provide havens from the outside and many from the arcane horrors that exist, ages untold.
Three nations bear their flag over land and sea, striving for dominance, for an age that will never collapse.
Their quarrels burden the living.
Guilds seek an easier way.
Religions seek for untapped power.
Every man chooses their side.
All the while the lost seeks to be found.
Maalim is a massive Archipelago of the world Eōs. The land’s history tells tales of 4 ages all buried by time and encroaching jungles and sea. Civilization is patchy along the land, fighting for power and safety. As Kingdoms vy for control and guild’s search for pieces of the past, something old stirs.
Maalim is a world close to my heart. I have built this world for a home game that is on going, but the setting seems larger then they all could ever explore. I have just a bit of time on my hands, enough for a Play-by-Post [for now] and was thinking of sharing this. I’m crazy particular with who I play with because I have had bad experiences before, so bear with me and my delusional expectations. With that said, this is what I am looking for:
As a Player:
Be Respectful to Me (DM) & Your Team. I feel like this is a general rule most of us should be comfortable with. If there are any problems or if you don't like the way another player is acting in or out of character, please let me know. As long as we stay within DnD Beyond's ground rules, we should be fine.
You Have to Love Writing. Since this is a Play-by-Post, I want people who can illustrate and personify their character and how they interact with the world. I treat my campaigns like a play, book or movie, and that often means there is plenty to read, and plenty to write. I'm not saying I'm perfect or professional in the slightest, you're going to see plenty of grammatical and spelling errors with how often I use mobile, but I do want as much quality writing as possible.
Immerse Yourself in Lore. You have to be able to get into character and their head-space, go by their understanding rather than yours. This world has a lot to explore or do, and not all of it is going to be dungeon crawls and fights. I will not accept a murder-hobo campaign, nor an evil campaign. I want players that are comfortable RPing and like to interact with the world and each other.
BeginnersWelcome, butIntermediatePlayersWanted. I am completely happy to be part of someone's experience in learning DnD as a game and tool for storytelling. I will gladly have some newer players, but I would prefer a mix of intermediate players too. In many places, I have room to grow as a DM, but I do know a good amount (and what I don't, I have the books for). I am however, very new to online format, so it would be nice to have someone who might be able to explain and show tips as far as mechanics go. Regardless of where you stand on DnD experience, your aptitude with Role-Playing is important.
AConsistentSchedule. I am plenty busy, it's why this is going to be mainly a PbP instead of other formats. My schedule could open up later and this be proposed as a mixed format, but for now I only ask availability of my players the same as mine. At least one post every-other-day, or the ability to 'pass' your turn if you know you won’t be able to make it. Message me if there are conflicts that won't allow you to respond. Consistent schedules and communication is important.
As a Character:
There Will Not be Any Home-Brew. This just makes it easier for me and for everyone else playing. Not to say I don't enjoy it, but for now and until I know how someone plays, the only home-brewing will be artifacts, creatures and weapons. No Races or Classes.
Maalim is a Very Unique Land. The world is riddled with odd societal norms, such as dinosaurs, outlawed magic, and lack of racial representation. Because of this, character creation will be something the player and I will sort out in order to blend the world's views with what is exciting and interesting for the player. The Races that are 'banned' as playable characters are: 1) Dwarves - They are incredibly uncommon this south among Maalim. 2) Lizardfolk - They are very present, but become difficult in RP settings unless your very familiar with them. 3) Goliath: They are incredibly uncommon this south among maalim.*Note that this does not mean you can't message me and make your case in order to play these races, it just means I'm more inclined to ask for changes or strong, reasonable backstories. As for Classes, be aware that a lot of the world views magic as the cause of the War of the 3rd Age. It is very difficult to get around using magic nonchalantly in areas without persecution, arrests or the severity of death. If you really want to play a magic user, please do, I encourage it, just be aware of the risks your character might have to face.
Quality Characters are Needed. Yes, that sounds incredibly opinionated because it probably is. It means I want realistic characters who become heroes. No one is raised by wolves, but a person could be a survivor of the jungles thanks to an incredibly adept caretaker or benevolent hag. Its okay if they have living parents, or their life was simple for a time before they stumbled upon a tome in the woods. They are starting at level one, so the likelihood they have killed a tyrannosaur bare handed or stolen a prize jewel from a palace is low. Be unique, but not unrealistic. If they have a fantastical tale why they are where they are, make it believable. This also brings up the importance of personalities. Please let your character have one. Personality traits are important, flaws even more so. Again, be believable, but make them enjoyable to interact with and play as. I will be guiding and asking questions as we build the story together, so don't worry if this all sounds daunting, I just want effort and willingness to sew your character into the large tapestry this world is.
If this sounds exciting to you and the terms seem reasonable, PM me with the following:
CharacterPreferences: (Classes you are comfortable with or enjoy using)
SampleCharacter: (Someone you plan on using or a good example of character building and backstory)
SamplePost: (A reply to the sample post below.)
Santama is a beautiful place. Palm trees grace every street-side, clean cobblestone streets pave the city while human architectural genius breaks the flat landscape with towers and arches. The citizens wear fine clothes with a simple fashion, their human faces filled with the opportunity of living in the Yur-Ki Dynasty's golden age. As you look down the bustling streets, trinkets and innovative tools sparkle under the blistering suns’ heat. Just past them, the coliseum awaits. A fighter's dream and a slave trader's destination of choice. That was where the truly curious happenings occur.
Before you have the chance to settle on your destination, a strong hand grips your shoulder from behind.
"Sir, what business do you have being here?" A soldier orders, dressed in white armor, the Yur-Ki insignia brandished on his shoulder and chest-plate.
I'm excited to build a story and enjoy this game together. Ihopetogatherapartyof4-7players, and depending on how it goes, I might plan on another party. I plan on leaving this open until the end of January for applications, and will try to have approval of a team by the end. I want to start playing this by mid February.
Yes, this is probably the last week for sending in applications. So far I’ve received a lot of good submissions, always hard to pick and choose who’ll be a great team together for this kind of open world campaign.
for anyone still wanting to submit an application, remember: follow the instructions for the required information. I’ve had some good applications that didn’t send in all the requirements and it makes it tricky to compare and choose when it’s missing. :)
Also: the application samples don’t need to be the characters you will/want to play in this game, just a good example of your best work in building a character and story.
With the applications I currently have, I will say it’s likely there would be a later starting 2nd game if all works out. So if it doesn’t work out for this one, it’s not because I didn’t think you weren’t worth playing with and there might come another where you’re first on the list. :1
Happy Gaming!

Tomorrow is the last day for any applications to be sent, I should be able to have the final roster soon after. We will then start the official character creation!
I still want to point out that I have yet to receive any applications that weren’t amazing and show how skilled the DnDB community is in making good interesting characters! I wish to have enough room for so many of you to play.
Best of luck to everyone!

For those curious, I’ve decided on a party of 7 made of:
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Welp. I did it. Its done, I've gone through every submitted application (there's a lot of active PbP players) and did one of the most painstaking selections I've ever made. I don't believe I ran into a single player I wouldn't want to play with, which is why this was so dang difficult. Most of these selections were based on one sample character, their sample post from the prompt, as well as taking into account the amount of active games the applicant is in (I wanted to make sure people with less had priority if the scores matched up). I want to note that the intermediates had a lot of matching scores that were then decided by the die. Veteran: - Metamongoose (DnD Beyond)
- RasecAlugard
