As the group proceeds along, you all see a man standing in the middle of the road, a sword sunken into the earth at his feet. As you approach, a wild grin makes itself evident on the man's face. Yaktar, Ivar, and Makaria all notice that the bushes in the area seem to be concealing a larger number of men. The bushes rustle as the party makes their way towards the man.
"Halt!" the grinning man calls to them, his posture unmoving. "Stop here and pay the toll, in the name of Sarika the Wise! A hundred gold for you all to pass."
The man begins to laugh. "Look, I don't know what you are, little thing, but I'll tell ya, anyone from around these parts knows that this is the only path for a few miles. And concerning your little suggestion..." The man swings the sword he had planted in the earth out of the dirt, and hefts it upon his shoulder. "Sarika doesn't make bargains. He makes demands."
"Well I ain't from around these parts, so shut yer derned mouth. We can walk off the beaten trail. Like I said, we can't give you any more than 50 gold. Take it or leave it pal. And no wise man makes demands, only people who are ruthlessly stupid."
Yaktar is standing casually, but his voice is steely. It sends the message that, even though I'm small, you picka fight with me, you've made the wrong choice.
Salthes has heard of this Sarika person and lets out an annoyed hiss. He then speaks low to the rest of the party.
"Sso this man musst be a part of this Ssarika cult that has shown up around here. I don't believe thiss man will bargain with us. Most fanaticss ssuch as thiss man don't ssee reasson. We should either pay the man or be ready to get rid of him, and I don't wissh to part with the ssmall amount of gold I currently hold."
He then prepares himself for a battle, though he unfortunatly doesn't realize that there are men in the bushes and assumes theres only one enemy.
Makaria listened to Salthes' words intently, a bit uncertain as to his information but in agreement with his conclusion. "I doubt they..." she whispered as she vaguely motioned towards the crown in hiding. "...Would make taking another route easy. And I don't believe I have the wing strength to carry us all over them." Her right hand inched towards the hilt of her rapier a bit, but it wasn't her primary focus in movement. She dipped a finger into the waterskin hanging off her side and drew a rune on her other arm. A thin crust of ice formed over her blue skin, being neither particularly visible or remotely hindering- There was a good chance that this would end in a fight, and the tiefling wanted to be absolutely certain she could take any hits that came her way. "I doubt that it really needs to be said, but be careful everyone..."
(OOC: Using the Icy Mantle simple property of the Ise Rune on myself)
Ren was more than a little annoyed at herself for needing to be told there were more. Of course this bandit wouldn't be acting alone. She would need to be more observant in the future. Her eyes scanned the area around her as the others spoke. "There are five..." She muttered to herself before nodding and whispering to the others. "Including the man in front of us, there are five total. They appear to be hiding in the bushes around." She waited a moment and sighed. "I believe a fight may be unavoidable." As she spoke, she slipped her pouch of gold from her belt (48gp). "I'll at least try to keep him occupied while you all plan. No need to signal me when you act, I'll be ready."
After taking a small breath, Ren stepped forward, pouch of gold in hand. "I'd rather avoid any unnecessary violence...If I pay I can go, correct?" She held out her arm as she slowly moved towards the man. She hoped that at least his eyes would be off the group.
While Yaktar tried to negotiate with this bandit and seeing that the ambush was set, Ivar could not hide the smile in his bushy face, and when Ren started moving toward the man Ivar slowly checked his shield traps in his arms and lowered his hand to be closer to his pick and quietly tells Yaktar: I am wanting to rush this bastard... Do you see if his companions have readied weapons?
"Why, here's a smart one!" The man with the sword chuckled. "Of course you can pass if you pay. 25 gold. Sarika the Wise isn't some kind of highway robber." He laughs at his own joke as he holds out a hand, ready to take the money.
"Of course he is. No fool would charge a road toll without an officials uniform if they weren't a highway robber. Don't you even think about handing over that gold, Ren. Ivar, I can't see any weapons, but they'd have to be even bigger idiots than Sakuri if they didn't have them ready."
Still Yaktar is torn - a peaceful solution or a violent one.

Really tired of this shenanigans of trying to negotiate a way through a darned thug on a random road forces Ivar to make a decision, and one thing is sure, Ivar always decides to act instead of talk.
Yaktar, I am tired of this are we going are we not deal. Give cover!
Saying that Ivar hushes at the man in the road drawing his war pick and aiming at his sword hand, remembering his training days with the Kneebreakers.
Hitting his mark with sure precision (23 to hit) Ivar pierces the thugs armpit trying to make him drop his weapon (damage 1d8+4+1d8 = 12 piercing damage (expended one superiority dice, Disarming Attack DC 14 STR, if does not save the thug drops his weapon)
Yaktar launches into action, mentally channelling the inner flame (switching focus to Mastery of Fire), and then spitting a bolt of fire (Energy Beam, type fire) at the bandit who had stood in the group's way. The bandit manages to dodge it, and Yaktar curses under hi breath.

"Well, it looks like we're doing this," Makaria muttered with a sharp flick of her tail. She began to charge forward, willing her (invisible) familiar to fly out towards Bandit 2 ahead of her. With the bandit somewhat distracted by the odd breeze behind him, it was easy for the tiefling to find a crack in his guard and stab at it, sheathing the man in a shimmering of magical energy. Just as quickly as she had rushed in, the trickster leapt out of the the man's immediate reach with a self-confident expression on her face. "Come and get me, you little hider!"
(OOC: Sending my invisible Faerie Dragon familiar behind Bandit 2, walking towards him for 15 ft., attacking him with a Booming Blade (roll 17 -hit-) for 14 damage (8- rapier +6- Sneak Attack), Using Cunning Action to Disengage and step southward 5 ft.)
Bah! Me friend, you should've let that sword drop and let us pass, now you have to deal with the bunch of us and I don't think you gonna like it much! Bwahahaha
While Ivar says his line he strike at the bandit with his war pick with great expertise, using his shield as a ram he forces the enemy's shield arm backward making an opening for his attack. (to hit melee weapon 1d20+6 = 23, damage 1d8+4 = 7 piercing damage).
The rest of yah bandits don't worry I'll be with you in a moment! Bwahahahahahah
Ren sighed as she heard Ivar rushing up behind her. With an almost apologetic look, she stepped to the side and let Ivar swing at the bandit. Wasting no time herself she drew her rapier and rushed to the side of the man. Ivar had already gotten a few hits in, she hoped to finish it so they could help their allies.
"My apologies." She said as she lunged forward and pierced towards a vital point on his body. (To hit 1d20+4= 18. Damage 1d8+2 + sneak attack of 2d6 = 19 piercing damage.)
Salthes quickly assesses the situation. Three of the bandits were already in view of Yaktar and Makaria and the leader was being attacked by both Ivar and Ren, thus the best course of action would be to try and hamper the one flanking Ren and Ivar.
"Don't think you can ssneak up on usss, meat!" He says and sends out an orb of green smoke that surrounds the man's head making him cough and gag as he chokes on the poison. Unfortunately the orb dissipates fairly quickly and Slathes curses under his breath in draconic.
(OOC: 9 Poison damage at bandit 5)

Salthes stumbles back slightly as the bandit charges at him and just barely misses a blow. "How dare you!" Steadying himself, Salthes hisses and sends 2 bolts of arcane energy directly into the body of the brute in front of him taking him out easily.
He then turns around and sends another bolt into the ranged bandit standing in the bushes by Yaktar landing it square in his chest.
