----------------------- UTILITY POST -----------------------
Rules:
This game is limited to new players only. There are not enough games open for new players to get in on. All content will be used from the Players Handbook (PHB) to allow access to most of the material available for free.
Read through all of this. I want to make sure this is going to work for you as well as myself and the others in the party. I've had a few people drop out from another game of mine. It sucks. Please be committed. I know exigent circumstances do occur and understand, but I would like to have a group that can remain together for the duration of the adventure.
Selections will be made from backstorys and party survival optimization.
This adventure will follow the printed adventure to begin with, but may stray off the rails.
About me:
I’m Kyle. Only had real experience in 5e games here in PbP games. Newer DM here ready to bring others into the D&D universe. I will be running a Lost Mines of Phandelver game. I can post at least once a day for the most part, but they will be lengthy so there should be plenty to work off of.
If you’re new to this, don’t worry, I am as well. I want to keep the group small and manageable.
In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagonload of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days’ travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found “something big,” and that he’d pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen’s Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horseback, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Hallwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to “take care of business.”
The story will begin on the trail with the players en route to Phandalin.
Game type:
5e game! PbP game posting at least once a day. Casual game folks! We all have lives. I enjoy roleplay and I want this to be a roleplay heavy game, so feel free to roleplay with one another between my posts. I tend to like detailed posters. One-liners tend to hem up the game quite a bit. And please please please use proper English.
This game features adults, using adult language. You have been warned. (Acquisitions Incorporated reference)
Starting at level 1. Characters will be races from the PHB only for the sake of keeping things simple with standard array or point buy, so no min/max stats, with starting equipment. If you want a back story go crazy. I will try to add them into the story somehow if possible. Attach a pic to your PC as well, please. Looking for 4, possibly 5 players.
Again, this is intended to be roleplay heavy in proper English.
Apply by posting your character here. Include the following:
Character name
Class
Race
Background (Impress with that background (roleplay heavy game))
Character description
Give me a line about your experience as well. Just curious about your experience level.
Example: I run toward the gap in the floor and jump. This isn’t going to be good. Just prior to jumping, I cast light on my quarterstaff. As I land, I take a swing at the guard with my quarterstaff. “You killed my father!”
Any skills, attacks and damage rolls (rolls need to be done in the forum with the dice roller) in the third line like so:
Milestone. I am not a fan of running games with XP leveling up. This gives the idea to players that killing everyone and everything will level up your character faster. I do not want to run a game filled with murder hobos killing everything in their wake and not roleplaying any other solutions. I will level your character when appropriate. Killing extra will not get you there any faster.
Initiative and combat:
Once we enter initiative, I will most likely roll for everyone if you haven’t beat me to it. This is to save time so we do not have to wait for someone to post a single roll to begin and proceed. The initiative will be listed in, most likely, its own post for easy access. I don’t want to tie the game up waiting for combat so if you take a while, I will post your action with your best interest in mind.
Loot and treasure:
Coins will be decided evenly to avoid a player vs player fight. The remainder goes to the Gods! You’re part of a team with some common goal, so act the part. Treasure items will be worked out between the party members. That is for you all to roleplay through and decide upon. No fighting like children. Looting will only find you coins and worthy items. I don’t want to have to deal with someone carrying 17 goblin swords to sell later for a grand total of 2 gp. I’ll give you guys coin and items so don’t worry about that.
Help action:
If you plan on "helping" another player to gain advantage, I won't grant it if you simply say "I help." I need to know how you are going to help this other person in this action. "I will help pull the door closed." "I will help push this item out of the way." Those would be fine to use the help action. Some actions I cannot bring myself to grant advantage for helping, such as lockpicking. How is a second person going to "help" you pick a lock?
Holding items:
I do pay attention to this. Two-handed weapons require two hands, so no shield. Want to hold two weapons? They both must be light. (Obviously, feats overrule this.)
Shields costs 1 action in combat to don or doff a shield (PHP 146). If you are a shield fighter, equip or unequip your shield on your sheet so I get an accurate representation of your AC.
Changing weapons? Rules as written (RAW) states you can stow your weapon as your one free action at the end of your turn, then draw a different weapon as your one free action at the start of your next turn.
Rule disagreements:
I don’t mind a discussion about rules (I’m still learning), but at the end of the day, I’m the DM (not trying to sound like a dick). The discussion will take place in the chat thread.
My only pet peeve:
Do not run my game and do not run another player’s character. We are here to have fun. This is not a war game where combat optimization is key, this is a roleplaying game. Taking over a game ruins the experience for everyone else involved. Don’t be that player please or a rogue tarrasque will take care of your character for me.
Our player characters:
Pops (Cbaer8) - Human rogue
Petros Gabriel (DTELDER) - Half-elf bard
Silva Mist (Stagnum) - Half-ef druid
Grum (Xarboth) - Half-orc ranger
NPC list:
Gundren Rockseeker - patron of your trip to Phandalin
Background: Brats is a lonely forest gnome. He set out when he was at the young age of 102 to get a better understanding for the forest he was born in. He spent the next 200 or so years living in the forest. Studying all sorts of animals and creatures and getting his handle on the bow. He never took the time to build a hut and has just been living in hollow trees, caves and holes where available. During his time in the forest, he has befriended a small gray squirrel, Iris, which follows him everywhere and usually rests on his shoulder.
Description: He had pale skin when he left, but all the time in the forest has tinted his skin slightly green. He has Brown hair and Dark Green eyes. He is 230 years old and stands at a small 3 feet 4 inches and weighs roughly 36 lbs. He doesn't have a lot of friends but when he does make them, he intends on keeping them. His temper is fairly short and therefore thinks that violence will solve anything. He also likes to mess with items and sometimes has a habit of breaking them, unintentionally of course.
During her time with the church Nyana was studying to be a healer. Learning to treat wounds, mend broken bones, and occasionally creating healing tonics. During her studies she learned of the Goddess of Healing, Mishakal. Quickly becoming obsessed with the Goddess she had started to prey to Mishakal in secret instead of the “God” the church recognized. One night a man came to the church seeking refuge and healing. He had been very badly beaten and looked as though he had been drug behind a horse. Upon entering the church he collapsed and became unresponsive. Nyana and the other healers quickly went to work. Working hard to heal this man to the best of their abilities. Unfortunately shortly after his arrival the man had passed. Upset with herself and her beloved goddess she internally cursed Mishakal. Blaming her for not providing Nyana with the ability to save this man. She was faithful and followed all of the visions she had seen during her trances. She was the best healer in the church but when the time came she could not save the life that needed saving. Later that evening while resting in a trance a vision came to her. What appeared to be a celestial being was dancing and singing her a song. The Celestial promised if she preformed the ritual the way she had been show the man would return to life. Quickly waking in a cold sweat Nyana rushed to the man. With other healers still around preying to save the poor mans soul. Nyana started singing the song and dancing the dance. Hearing gasps and screams behind her as she finished. She turned and saw the man sitting up breathing deeply. As Nyana passed out from exhaustion another vision appeared. The same Celestial this time brighter and louder. “You have proven to be faithful, truthful, and kind. Go to the world, heal those in need. I will be with you so long as you stay on the correct path.” The being started to glow brighter and brighter until sudden darkness fell. With her beloved goddess by her side and her new magical healing Nyana set out to the world healing those in need. Doing as her vision instructed and following the path set before her.
Description: A tall and thin woman approaches, her pointy ears jutting out from her purple hair. She is wearing leather armor with a shield on her back and a mace at her side.
Pops is an aging human, wiry, quiet, and grim. His background is not your business. He's usually honorable, if sometimes self-serving. He gets the job done, and has managed to stay alive this long. He's a contortionist and good in tight places. Stronger than he looks. Smart, suspicious, watchful, and not about to break into song. Pockets rather light these days - could use a little gold. Grey haired, weathered face, seen a lot of stuff.
Background: Petros lives in pursuit of the perfect song. Since leaving his family at the age of 16, he has travelled the country in search of the next great story. A story he, with the help of SledgeHammer, his trusty lute, can weave into the fabric of time. To craft the song for the ages! To create the very tune adventurers hum while falling beasts, taming the spectral world, and most importantly, drinking beer. Petros is a traditionalist at heart, drawing on the inspiration of those who took up the lute before him. He seeks likeminded souls to traverse the hardened soil of this land in search of the next scar, the next treasure, the next song.
Description: Petros stands at an impressive 6'2". As a performer, Petros understands the currency of appearance. His sleek, dark brown hair is well maintained. Unusual for his family Petros has grey-blue eyes, which, according to all of his admirers (both real and imagined), belie his 23 years of age. Most importantly, Petros' voice is warm in the belly, like the first drink of a fine whiskey. The golden shades and hues seem to dance between sound and light, drawing the most stoic of listeners into his trance. SledgeHammer was given to Petros by his father. Crafted of maple from the forests of his home and meticulously polished, the lute is his prized possession and never leaves his side.
Backround: Sven has lived in Neverwinter for many years and done his due diligence in the Neverwinter City Guard since he was the young age of 18. He has not always enjoyed his time there but it has overall been a positive experience until recently. He was ordered to cover up a murder by his superiors in the guard. It was a high profile case involving one of the major houses of Neverwinter. This didn't set well with Sven and rather than following orders he resigned his commission. He was a skilled polearmsman from his time in the guard and figured he could get steady enough work as caravan guard or as a bodyguard. He had done several jobs when one of his employers had referred him to another opening he had heard about on an upcoming shipment of provisions to the town of Phandalin that Gundren Rockseeker was currently hiring for.
Description: Sven stands as a fairly full build at the height of 6'1" tall and 215 lbs. His rough dark brown hair is speckled with a few gray hairs that show his experience of the age of 42. The years have not been the kindest to him as his time in the Neverwinter City Guard was clearly not always easy. He has very weathered skin that is slightly tanned as he clearly has been working outdoors as of late. His eyes are Hazel and he has a beard that is slightly out of control that is also speckled with a number of gray strands. His chainmail has clearly seen use as it is burnished and at certain points that clearly see more movement than others it is polished to a shine but a few links appear to be broken or missing. Underneath his chainmail his Tunic sticks out slightly in tufts that appear to be slightly frayed. Sven has a face that denotes seriousness but at the same time is gentle, he is not what most would consider handsome, more so a very average face. A few wrinkles, a couple small scars, but nothing calls your attention so glaringly to it to be memorable.
As the wizard talks to you all, the light flashes and you all collapse. You are transported into the new world of Dungeons and Dragons. You appear as the adventurer you have always wished to be. You have no memory of the prior incident with the wizard.
(That was just a chance to roleplay a bit. It has no bearing on the game.)
In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you all to bring a wagonload of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days’ travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found “something big,” and that he’d pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen’s Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Hallwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to “take care of business.”
You are all escorting a wagon of supplies pulled by two horses. The wagon is a flat bed cart with foot tall walls. A cargo net hold the supplies down. There is a seat up front for two to sit. Enough room in the back for two to sit among the supplies. Who’s driving the wagon? Where is everyone going to be? I prefer this game to have a decent amount of role play so talk amongst yourselves. How you know Gundren. Your plans with the money. Other reasons for being here and future plans.
You’ve spent the last few days following the High Road south from Neverwinter, and you’ve just recently veered east along the Triboar Trail. You’ve encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.
I hadn't been in Neverwinter long, a couple weeks at most, but I was running low on Silver. After asking around, trying to find some work, that's when I heard about Gundren. After talking with Gundren, that's when I took the job to help escort his supplies to Phandalin. As I approached the cart I saw the rest of the group standing around it. I gave a quick glance at the open spots and hopped on the back. I looked over at the rest of the group and gave them a wave. "Hey there! My name is Brats, are you guys here to help escort these supplies here as well?"
"I'm here for the payday. Did some work for one of those Rockseeker dwarves once before. (Don't ask.) Let's just get this wagon as fast as we can to Phandalin, and not play around here." "Driving horses isn't really my thing. I'll keep watch." Pops puts his half-whittled stick and dagger away, and climbs into the back, among the supplies, where he can keep a good view of the surroundings. He takes a peek under the netting to see what exactly he's sitting on.
(OOC: How many more hours/days of travel do we have ahead of us before we get to our destination? What time of day is it now?) (OOC: If the backstory of doing job for a Rockseeker once before doesn't fit the bill, I can cut it.)
After being summoned to Neverwinter months ago to provide healing I found myself looking for a change. Upon hearing of a call for warriors to escort a high value package to a nearby settlement I decided to answer. I figure there is a good chance my powers will be of use while passing through an area heavily run by bandits. I will keep this party alive and well!
Approaching the cart I introduce myself. “Greetings! I am Nyana Eljor, most call me Ny.” I move to the cart and take the other seat on the back next to the gnome. “Who might you be?”She says to the gnome.
Brats: I glance over at Ny and give off a slight smile. "My name is Brats, a weird name for a weird gnome, such as myself, and this here.." I make a motion toward the squirrel peaking out of my pocket at this point. "This here is Iris. Unfortunately she won't be of much use during our adventure, but she has kept me company growing up and goes with me everywhere." After conversing for a minute I hop off the back of the cart as it seems to be getting crowded. "It seems the back of the cart is a popular spot, that's ok, I don't mind riding up front!" I move to the front next to where the driver will be sitting and face the back of the cart where Ny and Pops are. "Unfortunately the last time I tried controlling a horse, I fell off, far fall for a gnome." I give off a chuckle then glance over at Pops. "Has anyone here worked with this guy in the past? Is he good on his word?"
[OOC: There was only enough room for two on the back Haha, it's ok, I don't mind the front.]
Brats and Nyana have proficiency in animal handling. One or the other or both can sit up front and take the reigns. Looks like Brats will take one half of the reigns. Will Nyana join Brats up front?
Pops will take a seat in the back among the uncormfortable pile of supplies.
Sven and Petros, where are you sitting? There is one more spot in back and the other will have to be on foot.
To show my worth to the rest of the group I turn back around, facing the horses and grab a hold of the reins of one of the horses. "I will guide this horse here. Ny, Care to join me up front and help me with the other horse?" I shout behind me hoping to get Ny's attention.
[OOC: I'm sorry about that, I forgot I had animal handling.]
Ny gets off the back of the cart and heads to the front climbing up next to Brats "It has been a long time since I have done so but I will give it a shot". Settling her self, she takes hold of the other reins. She turns to shout. "Is everyone here? Are we ready?"
[OOC: Also completely forgot I had animal handling too.]
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Enna | Wood Elf - Ranger 1 | Eternal Warfare - War Party D
Brats glances to the back then back toward Ny. "Either we're missing some people or we have a couple mutes in our group!" He says chuckling. "Maybe we should leave them!" He shouts loud enough for the rest of the group to hear.
"As I said, I'll be on watch. These old eyes aren't too bad." He looks sideways at the gnome. "I won't stab you in the back, sitting back here, if that's your concern. You should worry about keeping those horses in check." He returns his gaze to the treeline. "But we need to get moving."
Brats turns around and looks back at Pops and chuckles. "It's not your eyes that I am concerned about. I'm more concerned about the two that we haven't heard much from." Brats motions toward Sven and Petros.
Sven walks along the side of the cart with his Halberd out using it as a walking stick. "What can I say, I'm here for the work. If the work is getting done, what needs to be said. As soon as I see something that needs my attention I'll direct it that way."
OOC: I apologize, somehow didn't realize it wasn't in the other thread.
Brats turns toward Sven and responds slightly confused. "If we have your back, can we count on you to watch ours? When traveling in areas as dangerous as this, that's all that matters." Brats turns back around to glance at the last person who has yet to get in the back of the cart. "There is one spot left in the back of the cart, you getting on?"
[OOC: It's no problem Siollaro, you're here now haha. We are just waiting on the last person now.]
I'm getting started without Petros. Hopefully I can find you all a fifth by today and get him replaced. This adventure is difficult with just four.
The night before your departure, Gundren promised the four of you a fifth member to join you in your trip to Phandalin. Gundren and his companion, Sildar, left toward Phandalin soon after meeting with the four of you that night. He told you all to get a good night's rest. In the morning, you four arrived at the stocked cart. The fifth member never showed and after waiting a decent amount of time decided to head out.
Brats and Nyana take the reigns for the two oxen attached to the cart. The oxen are slow but steady. They do not move if someone is not holding the reigns. Pops makes his way up on the wagon. The wagon is packed full of an assortment of mining supplies and food. This includes a dozen sacks of flour, several casks of salted pork, two kegs of strong ale, shovels, picks, and crowbars (about a dozen each), and five lanterns with a small barrel of oil (about fifty flasks in volume). Sven takes up a position alongside the wagon, looking ready to deal with raiders.
After leaving Neverwinter, the road took you all south along the coast. The road south is an easy road to travel. Well worn and well packed, it serves as a main thoroughfare to other cities. After about a days travel, you arrive at the intersection of the High Road and Triboar Trail. You set up camp for the evening and the night passes without incident. The following morning, you all pack up and get moving again.
You've been on the Triboar Trail for about half day. As you come around a bend, you spot two dead horses sprawled about fifty feet ahead of you, blocking the path. Each has several black-feathered arrows sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side.
The blue dot is the adventuring party. The yellow dot is the downed horses.
As Brats notices the horses, he proceeds to pull back on the reigns to stop the oxen. Brats nudges Ny and motions toward the dead horses. "Hey guys, we have an issue up ahead!?"He shouts back at the group before looking at Ny."Do you think this is recent?" He asks wondering if this is something we need to be concerned about.
[OOC: With Natural Explorer, my favored terrain is Forest, are you classifying this area as Forest?]

"Driving horses isn't really my thing.
What time of day is it now?)
(OOC: If the backstory of doing job for a Rockseeker once before doesn't fit the bill, I can cut it.)
“Who might you be?” She says to the gnome.

Pops:
"Well here we are, nice and cozy, all sitting in the back of a cart together. Anyone know how to drive a wagon?" He glances at the unattended horses.

Brats
To show my worth to the rest of the group I turn back around, facing the horses and grab a hold of the reins of one of the horses. "I will guide this horse here. Ny, Care to join me up front and help me with the other horse?" I shout behind me hoping to get Ny's attention.
[OOC: I'm sorry about that, I forgot I had animal handling.]

Nyana
Ny gets off the back of the cart and heads to the front climbing up next to Brats "It has been a long time since I have done so but I will give it a shot". Settling her self, she takes hold of the other reins. She turns to shout. "Is everyone here? Are we ready?"
[OOC: Also completely forgot I had animal handling too.]

Brats
Brats glances to the back then back toward Ny. "Either we're missing some people or we have a couple mutes in our group!" He says chuckling. "Maybe we should leave them!" He shouts loud enough for the rest of the group to hear.

Pops
"As I said, I'll be on watch. These old eyes aren't too bad." He looks sideways at the gnome. "I won't stab you in the back, sitting back here, if that's your concern. You should worry about keeping those horses in check." He returns his gaze to the treeline. "But we need to get moving."
Brats
Brats turns around and looks back at Pops and chuckles. "It's not your eyes that I am concerned about. I'm more concerned about the two that we haven't heard much from." Brats motions toward Sven and Petros.

Sven Gard
Sven walks along the side of the cart with his Halberd out using it as a walking stick. "What can I say, I'm here for the work. If the work is getting done, what needs to be said. As soon as I see something that needs my attention I'll direct it that way."
OOC: I apologize, somehow didn't realize it wasn't in the other thread.

Brats
Brats turns toward Sven and responds slightly confused. "If we have your back, can we count on you to watch ours? When traveling in areas as dangerous as this, that's all that matters." Brats turns back around to glance at the last person who has yet to get in the back of the cart. "There is one spot left in the back of the cart, you getting on?"
[OOC: It's no problem Siollaro, you're here now haha. We are just waiting on the last person now.]

Each has
several black-feathered arrows sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side.
The blue dot is the adventuring party. The yellow dot is the downed horses.

Brats
As Brats notices the horses, he proceeds to pull back on the reigns to stop the oxen. Brats nudges Ny and motions toward the dead horses. "Hey guys, we have an issue up ahead!?" He shouts back at the group before looking at Ny. "Do you think this is recent?" He asks wondering if this is something we need to be concerned about.
