**You are all starting off at level two as some of you have completed Chapter 1 or completed most of it. Below is a recap for what you have done to get to this point.**
The year is 1491. Neverwinter, also known as the City of Skilled Hands and Jewel of the North, is rising from the ashes. Lord Neverember’s efforts to restore Neverwinter’s glory are paying off, and she is slowly being reestablished as a center of civilization in the Sword Coast North. Neverwinter is a city full of opportunities, and as word spreads, merchants from both the North and the southern lands are becoming interested in trading with the city once again. The population count is rising in response.
Individuals of all races and backgrounds have begun to gather in Neverwinter. Some open shops, some encourage trade, some hide in the shadows and take what they want, and some are hired hands available to hunt monsters and rescue damsels in distress.
You group of adventurers were in the Brawling Bard tavern when your dwarf patron and friend, Gundren Rockseeker, hired you to escort a wagon to Phandalin. Gundren has gone ahead with a warrior, Sildar Hallwinter, to attend to business in the town while you followed with the supplies. You were promised to be paid 10 gp each by the owner of Barthen’s Provisions in Phandalin upon safe delivery of the wagon to that trading post.
After you had been on the Triboar Trail for about half a day you found two dead horses sprawled out in front of you! It was a Goblin Ambush! You successfully slew the Goblins adn upon inspection you identified that the horses belonged to Gundren and Sildar.
You tracked the Goblins back to their hideout where you found a combination of wolves, goblins, and bugbears! By interrogating one goblin you found out the following information:
Their leader was a bugbear named Klarg. He answers to King Grol, chief of the Cragmaw tribe, who dwells in Cragmaw Castle.
Cragmaw Castle is about twenty miles northeast of the Cragmaw hideout, in Neverwinter Wood.
Klarg received a message from King Grol a few days ago. The messenger told him that someone named the Black Spider was paying the Cragmaws to watch out for the dward Gundren Rockseeker, capture him, and send him and anything he was carrying back to King Grol. Klarg followed his orders. Gundren was ambushed and was taken along with his personal effects, including a map.
The dwarf and his map were delivered to King Grol, as instructed. The dwarf's human companion Sildar was being held in the cave.
You fought your way through this cave smelling of poorly cured hides and unwashed goblins until you found Sildar Hallwinter securely bound and badly beaten. You killed his captors where he shares the following information with you.
Sildar Hallwinter is a kindhearted human male of nearly fifty years who holds a place of honor in the famous griffon cavalry of the great city of Waterdeep. He is an agent of the Lords’ Alliance, a group of allied political powers concerned with mutual security and prosperity. Members of the order ensure the safety of cities and other settlements by proactively eliminating threats by any means, while bringing honor and glory to their leaders and homelands.
Sildar met Gundren Rockseeker in Neverwinter and agreed to accompany him back to Phandalin. Sildar wants to investigate the fate of Iarno Albrek, a human wizard and fellow member of the Lords’ Alliance who disappeared shortly after arriving in Phandalin. Sildar hopes to learn what happened to Iarno, assist Gundren in reopening the old mine, and help restore Phandalin to a civilized center of wealth and prosperity.
The three Rockseeker brothers (Gundren, Tharden, and Nundro) recently located an entrance to the long-lost Wave Echo Cave, site of the mines of the Phandelver’s Pact.
More than five hundred years ago, clans of dwarves and gnomes made an agreement known as the Phandelver’s Pact, by which they would share a rich mine in a wondrous cavern known as Wave Echo Cave. In addition to its mineral wealth, the mine contained great magical power. Human spellcasters allied themselves with the dwarves and gnomes to channel and bind that energy into a great forge (called the Forge of Spells), where magic items could be crafted. Times were good, and the nearby human town of Phandalin (pronounced fan-duh-lin) prospered as well. But then disaster struck when orcs swept through the North and laid waste to all in their path.
A powerful force of orcs reinforced by evil mercenary wizards attacked Wave Echo Cave to seize its riches and magic treasures. Human wizards fought alongside their dwarf and gnome allies to defend the Forge of Spells, and the ensuing spell battle destroyed much of the cavern. Few survived the cave-ins and tremors, and the location of Wave Echo Cave was lost.
Klarg, the bugbear who leads this goblin band, had orders to waylay Gundren. Sildar heard from the goblins that the Black Spider sent word that the dwarf was to be brought to him. Sildar doesn’t know who or what the Black Spider is.
Gundren had a map showing the secret location of Wave Echo Cave, but the goblins took it when they captured him. Sildar believes that Klarg sent the map and the dwarf to the chief of the Cragmaws at a place called Cragmaw Castle. Sildar doesn’t know where that might be, but he suggests someone in Phandalin might know. (It doesn’t occur to Sildar immediately, but a captured goblin might also be persuaded to divulge the castle’s location. See the “What the Goblins Know” sidebar above.)
Sildar’s contact in Phandalin is a human wizard named Iarno Albrek. The wizard traveled to the town two months ago to establish order there. After the Lords’ Alliance received no word from Iarno, Sildar decided to investigate.
Sildar offered to pay you 50 gold pieces total to escort him to Phandalin as he was in no shape to continue on his own. You agreed but first made sure to clear out the goblin caves.
After slaying every goblin and the leader Klarg the bugbear you found captured stores which had the mark of a blue lion which you recognized as the Symbol of the Lionshield Coster, a merchant company with a warehouse and trading post in Phandalin. Along with this you found a treasure chest. It was clear the goblins had been ambushing merchants for some time.
Results of this Adventure which will be divided based on the number of party members we get:
Enough experience that all of you start at level two for this chapter.
Sildar will pay you 50gp total for safe arrival in Phandalin.
10gp each for the arrival of the wagon at Barthen's Provisions.
Three Gold Teeth(worth 1 gp each)
125 Silver Pieces
Supplies that you expect will grant you a reward if returned to Lionshield Coster
You are all on or near the wagon that you have been tasked to escort. The rutted track emerges from a wooded hillside, and you catch your first glimpse of Phandalin. The town consists of forty or fifty simple log buildings, some built on old fieldstone foundations. More old ruins — crumbling stone walls covered in ivy and briars — surround the newer houses and shops, showing how this must have been a much larger town in centuries past. Most of the newer buildings are set on the sides of the cart track, which widens into a muddy main street of sorts as it climbs toward a ruined manor house on a hillside at the east side of town.
As you approach, you see children playing on the town green and townsfolk tending to chores or running errands at shops. Many people look up as you approach, but all return to their business as you go by.
Take this time to describe who your character is, what they look like, and what they are doing at the moment. Remember you know the others on the cart as you have been through a large adventure already. You approach Phandalin from the north as you are on the "Triboar Trail"
“My friends” Halben says with a slight sigh. “As we approach Phandalin, I think it is only fair to inform you that if you continue to associate with me you will be in danger.” Halben looks away briefly then continues. “When I first came to Phandalin, I did not know I had this sorcerer powers of fire. I came seeking honest work, but one evening when I was returning to the inn, I had an encounter with the Rebrand gang. Three of them jumped me from behind and scuffle enticed between us. Unfortunately, strength has never been my forte” Halben flexes his scraggly arms “and I found myself pinned to a wall in an alley.” Halben eyes narrow and his tone darkens. “One of them pulled a knife and when he pulled back his arm to stab me, I felt a deep heat from inside me manifest into my hand as a flame. My body acted on its own, and I grabbed the face of the guy with the knife.” Halben States as he moves his right arm out and grabs the air as if grabbing an orb. ”The other two men as if in shock loosened their hold on me which allowed me to escape. Fleeing back to the inn, I changed clothes and packed to leave. As I left the inn and was rounding to corner of the street, I saw the three men with another robed man enter the inn yelling.” Halben pauses and looks at the wagon “I swore to myself that I would never come back to Phandalin and I planned on leaving before we got to town” sweeping his gaze from the wagon Halben moves his eyes to each one present, pausing for just a brief instant “but my journey with you all has given me a new confidence. I do not plan to fight them, but I only found it fair to warn you that I may still be a wanted man here.” Halben finishes, takes a deep breath and smiles.
Following closely behind the cart is Conway. A Human Warlock with long black hair, piercing eyes, and a black goatee. He wears a common leather vest with a silver sickle sheathed to the front, leather belt with a stake (wooden) and hammer, and multiple vials of various substances also attached to the belt. Needless to say he looks like a hunter of sorts... But something of unearthly origin.
Conway says nothing as he gazes upon the city of Phandalin and listens to Halben's story. When Halben finishes Conway looks at him at nods and says "Don't worry friend. Just keep your hood up and head down and we can get through here without issue. If they do start trouble I'm sure some adventurers like ourselves might be able to make a dent in the ranks."
Conway is something of a hot head when it comes to ignorance and not afraid to use the tools at his disposal to torture or even kill. Not that he wants to but he never limits himself to morality.
Beside Conway follows a beautiful Elf with long ice colored hair and bright eyes. Her name is Fawn. She is adorned with trinkets that jingle off her silk scarves from head to toe. She almost dances alongside the wagon absent minded. You hear her rambling about the moon and stars being in line and something about mercury being in retrograde. Until Conway rolls his eyes and mutters something about the task at hand under his breath.
“Awe yes, the rebrand gang” she flips her hair “I wouldn’t worry too much about them Halben. It’s my understanding they are easily distracted” as she winks and continues her rambling about the planets as they forward down the path.
Although Fawn seems a bit distracted by seemingly unimportant things, when it come to battle she has razor focus. She is a ranger and clutching a shortsword in each hand, she becomes a whirlwind of steel, cutting down one enemy after another.
Riding in the back of the wagon is a large wood Elf with worn clothing and a large burly beard. His hands are cracked and calloused from years of hard labor. He whistles to the birds as they whistle back. It’s apparent that he is in tune with nature. He mentions how it is nice to finally be with company since he mostly lives a life of solitude. He says how coming into a town full of people makes him a bit uneasy though. He is cautious and observant as he scans the tree line for potential dangers but also taking time to listen to any ques from nature.
Cypress nods toward Halben “I believe we can take care of them if troubles were to arise”.
All of a sudden Cypress’s head turns abruptly towards the tree line.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Cypress's head snaps toward the tree line, clearly on edge from the prior days battles only to see a squirrel come by playfully.
Sildar Hallwinter still weak from being beaten is glad to be arriving in Phandalin. Sildar seems much more at ease now that he sees the townsfolk and not a goblin in sight. It is not quite evening yet but it is later in the afternoon.
"My friends," Sildar coughs out. "let us secure lodgings. I'm told the local inn is very quaint."
OOC(Out of Character): You may now do as you wish as you have arrived in Phandalin!
During your travel you were able to split your loot among each other. I have rolled to determine who gets the extra items but feel free to give them to others if you feel they would benefit from them more. Please add the following to your inventory.
Halben: 31 Silver Pieces, 150 Copper Pieces, Jade Statuette of a Frog with Tiny Golden Orbs for Eyes(Worth 40 Gold Pieces Each)
Some Ideas for what you can do:
Sildar promised 50gp total for safe arrival in Phandalin. He does not have this gold on him as he has been beaten and will need to retrieve. If you take him to an Inn. He may be able to acquire the gold promised.
You were hired to take the wagon you are on to Barthan's Provisions in Phandalin which your reward will be 10gp each if you take it there.
You found supplies bearing the emblem of Lionshield Coster Merchants. You have these supplies with you and if you take them to them you may be rewarded.
If you wish to buy or sell goods you may ask a local where a store would be for what you are looking for and they may guide you
Bouncing gleefully around at the arrival into town Fawn dances over and stands next to Cypress as she faces the rest of the group.
“Cypress and I can take the wagon back to Barthan’s Provisions.” “Would you (pointing at Conway) and Hablen want to escort Sildar back to the inn to get some rest and then meet at us Lionshield Costner Merchants? “We can all return their supplies together and possibly load up on other supplies we might need”
Conway gives a nod to Fawn and says “why of course my dear” and walks over to Sildar. “Honestly I can run Sildar to the inn and Hablen may do what he pleases for now. Or do you want to go Hablen?” Conway asks
Halben examines the Jade statuette. It does seem to be good quality. After focusing on the statuette Halben doe not determine it to have any magic properties. You determine that this must just be something pretty for decoration that has no usefulness.
Cypress eagerly agrees to accompany Fawn on returning the wagon, on one condition, that they stop for a pint of mead somewhere before meeting back at the Lionshield Costner merchants.
**WE WILL NOW BE OPERATING TWO SEPARATE INSTANCES SINCE THE GROUP IS SEPARATED**
**CONWAY AND HALBEN**
Conway, Halben, and Sildar make their way to the Inn.
In the center of town stands a large, newly built roadhouse of fieldstone and rough-hewn timbers. The common room is filled with locals nursing mugs of ale or cider, all of them eyeing you with curiosity.
**FAWN AND CYPRESS**
Fawn and Cypress guide the wagon to Barthen's Provisions.
You arrive to a fairly sized trading post which has a sign hanging as Barthen's Provisions. A young human with brown spiked hair wearing a red shirt calls to you, "Can I help you travelers?"
Sildar nods to Conway and Halben, "Thank you, for the safe arrival adventurers! On my word, you will receive you 50 gold pieces by tomorrow. As you can see.."
Sildar motions to himself then says, "I do not have coin on me but as a warrior of the Lord's Alliance I will be able to secure a loan fairly quickly. I have allies in this town and will need to begin seeking them out if I am to find someone to help me save Gundren. First things first, I will need to secure lodging. If you will stay here, feel free to talk the proprietor, I will have your gold by dawn. Thank you so much again, I would be goblin food without you."
You watch as Sildar walks up to a counter and looks around for someone to help. Shortly, a seeming friendly short young human male approaches him at the counter and they begin discussions clearly negotiating lodging.
As you look around the room you see many people in the Inn conducting various activities.
You see what appears to be an older human wearing overalls sitting off by himself enjoying a nice mug of cider. His hair is starting to thin but he still seems full of energy. You can see him chatting up a half-elf barmaid wearing a green dress. While she seems to be friendly you can tell she is trying to get away from the old farmer as the Inn is buzzing with activity and she has money to make!
There is also another human whose clothes you are really not sure what color they were as they are covered in dust. You are able to discern that this human must be a miner from the dust covering his or her clothes. The miner is drinking a nice mug of ale and speaking quietly with a female human wearing a vibrantly colored dress.
You hear glasses shatter and a woman scream! You are at first startled till you realize it is a human female with an apron chasing around a little human boy who just made her drop a few extra mugs for the patrons.
**FAWN AND CYPRESS**
The young man immediately recognizes the name, "Oh yes! Yes! Please follow me, we have been expecting you!"
You follow the young man into Barthen's provisions. As you pass through the swinging saloon style doors you see most ordinary goods you would expect to find. There are backpacks, bedrolls, ropes, rations, but you do not notice are weapons or armor on the shelves.
The young man calls out in the store. "Elmar! Elmar! Gundren Rockseeker's supplies have finally arrived."
You hear a thud followed by a lean balding human male making his way excitedly from in the back of the shop to the front. He is holding his elbow as it looks like he hit it in his excitement. He walks up to the young man and then looks to you.
Elmar says, "How exciting! Thistle, find Ander and begin unloading the cart immediately! Gundren will want to begin as I know the old dwarf does not like to be behind schedule!"
The young man scurries off to find his partner.
Elmar says to you, "We were starting to get worried! Gundren wrote a few ten day ago that he would be sending supplies by four adventurers! I do hope you had safe travels."
Elmar reaches in his coin pouch and provides you with 40 gold pieces. Please add 20 gold pieces to each of your inventory until you regroup with the others.
Elmar then smiles and crosses his arms, "Oh I have been dreaming of this day! Even since Gundren told me of the discovery. I know he said he was coming ahead of the supplies but I imagine he decided to travel with you? Where is the old dwarf?! Probably already at the Stonehill Inn having a celebratory ale I imagine?"
I hate to be the one to tell you this sir, but Gunderon has been captured by the goblin band lead by Klarg the bugbear. He and Sildar were attacked by them but fortunately Sildar is safe at the inn. He believes they have sent him to the Cragmaw Castle.
You wouldn’t happen to know where that is would you?
If you don’t, do you know someone who might know?
Sildar also overheard the goblin say that Black Spider was the one who sent the order to bring him back to him.
You wouldn’t happen to know who or what the Black Spider is would you?
