The party rests for a moment and catches their breath. Through a combination of Druid Magic and healing potions the group replenishes some of their strength. Cypress does leave his bear form in order to cast these spells which was going to run out soon anyway.
Halben opens the door...
This tower has almost completely collapsed, although the ground floor still has a little open space. Rotting crates and ancient barrels show that provisions were once stored here. A heavy curtain blocks a crumbling area to the south, and an intact door leads east. To the north, a short passage through the rubble ends before a screen of canvas.
Halben peaks behind the heavy curtain where he sees a familiar sight. There is a hallway and a door that is open. Halben recognizes it as the door to the kitchen and then another door leading outside. He concludes this must be another way to where the goblins in the kitchen fled from the castle and maybe useful if a hasty retreat is needed.
A stone brazier full of coals glows in the middle of this small barracks. Four straw pallets are lined up along the east wall. The wall to the south has collapsed, but a barred wooden door in that direction is still clear. A curtain hangs in an archway to the north.
One orange skinned hobgoblin wearing chain mail with his shield raised and longsword at the ready looks on. Two goblins armed with short swords and shields look determined. These are clearly seasoned warriors as they look older than most goblins where many goblins die young.
"The defenses have failed then. Warn the king. Kill the dwarf. I will hold them." The Hobgoblin says.
"Shlek! Go to the King! I will die here!", The first goblin who runs up with a limp to Halben. She lashes at Halben with her sword but nearly stumbles and falls missing Halben completely.
Attack: 5 Damage: 8
The second goblin sprints out of sight behind the curtains to the north. "MY KING THEY ARE HERE!" You hear him shouting.

Fawn steps forward and slashes with both swords. One finds it's mark and slices the Hobgoblins Hamstring where it cannot move. Halben then steps forward taking advantage of the situation and releases fire from his finger tips.

Fire envelops the hostile humanoids and cooks them. They both fall to the ground dead!
The two enemies that were still in the room have been defeated! The one other goblin ran to the north through the curtain at G,6. Does Cypress give chase?
At seeings his companions eliminate the immediate threat Cypress drops down on all fours. His face elongates into a snout hair shoots out of his neck into a mane and spots come over his body as he transforms into a Giant Hyena.
Cypress sprints down the hallway running past the curtain to the north. Halben and Fawn give chase behind him. As the curtain runs over Cypress's fur and down his back he is able to make out the backside of a goblin moving into a door to the right. Cypress bears down hard he can hear the goblin still shrieking, "INTRUDERS! INTRUDERS!". Cypress moves into the room and he clamps down on the back of the neck of the goblin and shakes it violently breaking it's neck. He hears the crack and tastes the warm blood run in his mouth. Halben and Fawn enter behind him and everyone at the same time hears a growl....
Now everyone looks up at their surroundings. This chamber has been set up as a crude living space, with thick furs thrown on the floor to serve as carpets, old trophies hanging on the walls, a large bed to the north, and a brazier of coals burning brightly. A round table with several chairs stands to the south near the door. A wooden door to the North East seems fairly ajar. There you see a fierce old bugbear. Age has stooped his shoulders and hunched his back but he still looks menacing with this shield in one hand and morning-star in the other. You know as soon as you see him that this is King Grol...
To the right of King Grol is a wolf snarling. Cypress's primal instinct cannot help to stare down the wolf and bristle his fur as well. At the feet of Grol is an unconscious and severely beaten Dwarf. His face is swollen but from the clothing you remember this must be Gundren Rockseeker.
King Grol places one foot on Gundren's ribs and you hear a slight moan. He raises his morningstar and looks at you.
"Is this Dwarf what you've come for? Is this Dwarf why you have killed my servants? Any closer and there will be nothing left for you to rescue. Turn around and go! Now! Or Snarl here will be biting your throats out!", King Grol says.
Halben will first cast Detect Thoughts enhancing it with the subtle spell metamagic to so King Grol does not seem him cast it.
Once complete he will say "Well hello there. We did not know you were in charge of such servants. Apologies in advance for killing them. We are just in a hurry to get out of here, and I am sure you know that when you are in a hurry, you can't help but slaughter a few things that get in your way. Now, we can do this the easy way, or the hard way. I am sure you heard that there were four of us that came to this castle. Now there are only three. Do you know why that is? One of your goblins told us what you truly fear. Your deepest, darkest fear. Do you remember what your greatest fear is?"
Halben will wait to see if this triggers any images in the King's mind before he continues.
Grol THOUGHTS: No. How would they know about Targor? No one knows about that ******* hobgoblin plotting to take my throne. We must have killed one of theirs while they were in. That damn drow better get out here and help with this lot.
King Grol motions lightly swings his morningstar near Gundrens head.
"Well now you know. King Grol rules all this land! I care not what some shit goblin said. If I were you I'd be leavin' now or else instead of three there won't be any of you."
Grol looks at his wolf.
"Snarl, if they attack me kill their dog first. I always liked a good dog fight."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Well I guess you don't want to know what Targor is planning then. It is a pity, he definitely is not as fit to rule as you but if his plan goes through, I see him finally able to defeat you." Halben let's out a sigh. "King Targor just has a bad ring to it..."
King Grol's shoulders slump forward a bit more than usual slightly taken aback. He begins to become more aggressive.
Grol growls more than anything at Halben, "So then? Targor sent you to kill me and my soldiers while he has out with the hunting party?! Why stop? Why not finish what you started? I'll kill you and then I'll have Targor Bloodsword's Hobgoblin head on a pike when he returns! No one will take my throne. Tell me this before you die at my feet. Are the other three in his party privy to his plan? Ugar, Jaroth, or Creton?"
Grol is beginning to foam at the mouth becoming more animal than humanoid.
"Oh Targor didn't send us to kill you. Just information we picked up on the way. Let's make a deal, give us the dwarf, then we can discuss a plan to take out Targor. I do not care of your fighting, but if you wish, you could hire us to take out Targor. A quick make shift alliance. It's a good deal for both of us."

”I am... Open to your offer. However, there is nothing to stop you from attacking me or even siding with Targor after you have the Dwarf.”
King Grol stands up a bit straighter.
”Targor and his band are set to return any moment now. I’ll leave Snarl here to guard your dwarf. We will ambush and slaughter Targor together then you can have your dwarf and leave my castle.”
King Grol looks menacingly once more.
”Or I am happy to give you half of him now and half of him later.”
"That is fine. Leave Snarl and the dwarf here for the moment. However, we should move somewhere to else to better ambush Targor. Which direction will Targor be returning?" Halben asks.
