OOC: Mingo, have you been watching the Apple-original TV series See? Quillary's description of a book is reminiscent of Paris's.
Hildigrim accepts the mug of ale and, after tucking his new book into the waistline of his pants and gathering a few random objects off the table, he follows Jorin back to the inn, sipping on the drink. He climbs into a chair, his head barely an inch above the plate. He spoons food into his mouth without talking, his eyelids continuing to droop. When Quillary returns and comments on their odor, the halfling makes a half-hearted attempt to smell himself, but then just shrugs.
Jorin is actually quite delighted by the idea of bathing in the frigid river. "A refreshing plunge into those cool waters will remind me of home. I'll go do that after brekfeast. What is the plan for today, friends?"
Qullary re-enters the inn, clean(er). "That was an experience of total refreshment. The rest of you should try it, as you are collectively"
Drusk agrees with her, but the half-orc also includes Quillary in the collective. "I didn't want to say anything, but all of you smell peculiar. Scented soaps and water... meh. Not good for the skin.
"You all should stick with the ancient ways: apply a liniment of olive oil and volcanic ash, then scrape it off. But I suppose your water bathing is better than doing nothing at all."
(OOC: I've never tried it, but I remember seeing Roman bronze "scrapers" in a museum.)
(OOC2: Unless someone had other plans they wanted to do in Dynnegal, the story will pick up after an uneventful trip back to Amphail.)

(OOC: I had to find some old posts to remember the timeline. Your group fought the Black Bloods on Howldown (Nightall 11), which was an amusing coincidence.
I am going to be busy tomorrow, so that is why I am dumping a long post all at once.)
Your group arrives back to Amphail on the evening of Nighall 15. The trip back was uneventful, and even pleasant. With the unusual spring-like warmth and sun, it is almost like nature is blessing your efforts. The roads are still muddy after the multi-day rainstorm, but your horses are in high spirits and traveling well.
You arrive too late to speak to the captain of Amphail, but an appointment has been made in the morning. A night at the inn has been paid for by the military (as part of your contract).
Howldown is still in full swing. Although there are rumors that the ghost has been seen more often in recent days, Hildigrim only catches sight of children running around in sheets.
After a well-earned night's rest on soft beds, it is the morning of Nightall 16. You arrive at the captain's office. Tybie Gow is a fit and tall middle-aged woman, respected by the local troops for her achievements. On the table next to her desk is a recreation of some famous battle, with hand-crafted buildings in miniature and tiny painted figures for the combatants.
Hildigrim sees a heavy book on that table. He lifts one side to see the title ("The Art of War Minatures" by Michelangelo Tzu), but puts it back when Tybie starts talking.
She has listened to your stories, and read the report note by Seren. Tybie is pleased by your quick work, but also concerned about the news of the disease-curse, the Black Bloods, and the prophecy dreams your group is having. She orders her clerk to start counting the pay for your work (including hazard pay). She turns to you with a serious expression.
"I'd like to hire your group for another task: to end this Howling Disease curse that this cult of Black Bloods are responsible for. I think this task needs to be dealt with soon. Unfortunately, I am severely short-handed, with most of the guards trying to find glory during the Howldown season.
"If you are willing to complete this task, please come back at noon. I need to time to consult my superiors, but I believe they will support my decision to offer you another contract."
After receiving your pay, Drusk turns to the group, a little sheepish. "I know we took the job to get some of the funds we need to re-open the Road's End back in Waterdeep. But if we are going to face more of these were-cultists, I'd be happier to be better armed. I am going to spend most of my earnings to get silver plating on Joybringer, so my mace will be more effective against those creatures... If you were looking for healing potions, I should be able to talk the local chapel to give you one for 50 GP." Drusk then heads towards the blacksmith/silversmith.
(Everyone in the group, add 60 GP to your inventory. If you decide to buy a potion of healing, then only add 10 GP instead of 60. You have time to purchase a few ordinary items from the PHB, if you want. For example, if Hildigrim wanted a wand, it costs 10 GP, but he can chose any of the items listed under Arcane Focus if he doesn't want a wand.
If Hildigrim wanted to cast Find Familiar, he will have to hurry, but he will have time before noon. He would have to spend another 10 GP for the materials that will be consumed by the spell.)

OOC: Passing on purchasing a potion of healing, but will pick up a wand and will cast find familiar and choose an owl as its form.
OOC2: Hildigrim wants a journal. He's been thinking about the idea of writing his story and thinks it's a good one. If he had found a journal in Dynnegal, he would have picked it up. If not, he'll try to buy one in Amphail. He already has a bottle of black ink, a quill a small knife.
The ride from Dynnegal to Amphail, Hildigrim hardly said a word. He lulled on the back of his horse, using every ounce of what energy he had to stay awake. As soon as they got rooms at the inn, he curled up and was asleep immediately.
The next morning, he was back to his old energetic and talkative self. He made sure to eat something (some would say a lot) before heading to their meeting with Tybie Gow. After being handed his portion of the pay and then hearing Drusk's apology for wanting to spend his share, Hildigrim smiles at the half-orc. "Worry not, my friend. I intend to spend some of this on myself as well. I need an arcane focus and plan to summon my fey companion." As the halfling speaks, his face brightens even more. "Hainard's hairy toes, this is exciting! I'll see you all back here at noon."
Hildigrim finds the shops he needs. First, he peruses a small selection of arcane foci. He is tempted to buy a staff as it is the cheapest, but feels its size might become a burden. (The thing was three times his height after all.) And the crystal's shine and glitter caught his eye, but he ultimately decides to purchase the smallest wand. It is a fairly nondescript object, about twice the length of his hand and only barely gnarled. The wood is light with dark veining. He purchases the wand and 10 gp-worth of charcoal, incense and herbs. Before leaving the shop, he pulls out his new spellbook and finds the dancing lights spell. He carefully performs the incantation, focusing through his new wand, and the three spheres appear, burning brightly above his head. He barks a laugh of delight and then dismisses the lights, thanks the shopkeep, and leaves. The shopkeep helpfully told Hildigrim a couple places he might be able to find a brass brazier to use. The halfling was able to find one and went to work performing the find familiar spell for the very first time. Luckily (he is a halfling), everything went smoothly, and as the incantation was completed, an owl the perfect size to compliment 2'10" Hildigrim appears. If flies over and lands on Hildigrim's raised arm. They blink at each other companionably. "Volo," Hildigrim smiles. "That's what I'll call you."
With his tasks done, Hildigrim spends the rest of the morning walking around Amphail talking to Volo. Before noon, the halfling and his owl are back at the captain's office.
Quillary spends most of the trip back talking softly to her horse in Druidic using Primordial (double-secret!) about the nature of life, death, and inevitability, but she’s pretty upbeat about it.
In Amphail, she is a bit bemused by the children, enjoys the provided meal, and immediately falls asleep on the floor of the room she stays in.
In the morning, she is quiet during the meeting, letting Hildi leads the conversation with the Guard. She seems uncertain about what to do with the money, but after a while goes to purchase new clothes. She comes back with new boots, a heavy skirt to replace the threadbare pants she had, new tops, an ugly holiday sweater, and a warm cloak. Along with that bath, she seems a new person. Somewhere she found a winter blooming flower for her hair.
She will wait for the others on the front porch of the inn, where she is playing with a candle, lighting and snuffing it, lighting and snuffing it, over and again.
Jorin does indeed go take that bath in the river after breakfast. As soon as the weather clears and the sun is shining, the barbarian's slips back into his old jovial ways. During the trip back, he sings a song about laying men to sleep on the red snow of icy, mountain peaks.
Back at Amphail he agrees with Drusk's decision and believes he ought to do the same, though he is wary of letting another hand touch the axes he made. He will seak out a dwarven smith and ask if he can rent their forge so he can perform the silver cladding himself (ooc, trying to use a bit of my background feature). He would also offer to do the cladding on Joybringer, if there is time. If that isn't possible then he will look at every smith in the town (if there are more than one), meticulously inspect their wares and, if any are up to Mithril Hall standards, allow them to do the work.
Any money he has left over, save 5gp, he will give to Pascal to add to the Road's End fund.
Background feature - Respect of the stout folk
Clan Crafter
Feature: Respect of the Stout Folk
As well respected as clan crafters are among outsiders, no one esteems them quite so highly as dwarves do. You always have free room and board in any place where shield dwarves or gold dwarves dwell, and the individuals in such a settlement might vie among themselves to determine who can offer you (and possibly your compatriots) the finest accommodations and assistance.
”Volo...”Pascal snaps his fingers, “Hey, that’s the same name as that author you like! What a coincidence.”
Pascal doesn’t need to do much shopping. However, are there banks in the city? I might as well try to get some returns for my cash while we’re away.
OOC: I was tempted to have Pascal say to Hildi, "Nice bird... It's kind of small, and not enough time before the meeting, but I could have it BBQ'ed by suppertime."
Hildigrim: You have your wand, and your owl.
Pascal: I found some comments by Ed Greenwood. In Waterdeep, the temples and guilds act as banks for their members (or require high fees for non-members). The city (Piergeiron's Palace) and private moneylenders would be alternatives... He suggests that most citizens would instead use their money to invest in market stalls, goods wagon rental, or a cargo ship. (Kind of like our party investing in the Road's End.)
If Pascal was looking for something in Amphail on short notice, in post 1235 he noticed that the Stag-Horned Flagon tavern has recently re-opened under new management, after repairs. They might find investors handy to increase their money flow. (The tavern will come up in the module after this one, so my meta-gaming advice is that this is a poor investment.)
Quillary: Did she already have Traveler's Clothes in her equipment, or did she just purchase them? (Drusk still has his Acolyte common clothes, so he should upgrade his wardrobe at some point.)
Jorin: After doing more research, neither he or Drusk have time to silver their weapons. I forgot it costs 100 GP (which is more than Drusk has). Looking online, the idea is this is a melting and re-casting of the weapon as a silver-steel alloy, which the average blacksmith would not be able to do... Following the guidelines of XGtE, it would still cost Jorin 50 GP and 2 weeks of time for a weapon. (With Drusk helping out with manual labor under Jorin's supervision, that is still a ten-day of work per weapon.)
While the smithies at Amphail are adequate for repair work and small items, Jorin would want to use the facilities in Waterdeep for more difficult work.
Everyone: The "party funds" is at ~16 GP. (These were the coins leftover, after giving the characters a good share of what was found.) This would be for things that everyone would want, like the Road's End repairs. How much do people want to contribute at this time? +10 GP? +20 GP?
I know Jorin wanted to pitch in more, but I'd feel better if it was equal shares. If everyone agrees on the same amount, then everyone should deduct that from their player's coins, and I'll increase the "party fund" by that amount.
The party is trying to get Lord Neverember to invest in the tavern in Waterdeep, but the more coins the party can get, the smaller the loan will be. To re-open the Road's End will require 1250 GP in repairs, and around 250 GP per month for expenses. (There needs to be some amount of coins to cover bad business weeks and unforeseen accidents.)

Hildigrim is ready for Hogwarts! He can contribute either 10 or 20 gp to the party funds. Something tells me it's going to be a while before I can afford to cast identify.
Quillary has replaced old travelling clothes with new travelling clothes (for 2 gp). She is happy to contribute 55 gp of her payment to the group fund. She lives cheaply (adding 3 gp to her inventory).
Jorin has right about 95gp and is happy to offer that for group needs. He is a little concerned about going on a werewolf hunt with only one silvered weapon. Are there any already made silvered weapons for sale? Any one handed weapon would do, though he'd prefer a battleaxe, bit he'd take a warhammer ,or longsword in a pinch.

Hildigrim is ready for Hogwarts! He can contribute either 10 or 20 gp to the party funds. Something tells me it's going to be a while before I can afford to cast identify.
I think it would be alright to use some party funds to invest in Hildi identifying things for us. Thoughts?

Quillary has replaced old travelling clothes with new travelling clothes (for 2 gp). She is happy to contribute 55 gp of her payment to the group fund. She lives cheaply (adding 3 gp to her inventory).

Jorin has right about 95gp and is happy to offer that for group needs. He is a little concerned about going on a werewolf hunt with only one silvered weapon. Are there any already made silvered weapons for sale? Any one handed weapon would do, though he'd prefer a battleaxe, bit he'd take a warhammer ,or longsword in a pinch.
