(OOC: Thanks for letting me take the summer break, folks. We're back, minus one beloved player/character. Refresh yourselves on NPCs and whatnot at the very bottom of the campaign page)
The group that returns to the Road's End tavern that evening is wet, cold, and missing one of its number. Dry towels float out to each of you as you stomp snow off your feet, warmed by the fire that Renaer and Jalester have set. The fifth towel hangs somewhat forlorn in midair, and eventually Lif drapes it over a stool. The smell of a feast fills the place, and the fire is cheery. There are a few people unknown to the group, among them a small family of halflings sitting at one table, boisterously carrying on. Fala, the elven herbalist from across the alley is standing conversing with two male genasi, one fire, and one water. They all turn to you as you enter.
The tale you tell is a curious one. Charged by the Blackstaff to visit a strange monk on Mount Waterdeep, you set out in the morning of a clear, cold day. But snow soon rolled in, and the steep climb led you to an ambush set by not just a fearsome manticore, but also a small group of thugs dressed as the City Guard. You were confused at first, as they pretended to aid you, but soon enough it was clear, as the young monk, Ilena, caught an arrow meant to surprise her from behind. Amid the swirling snow and slick footing, you fought bravely, embiggened by magic, and though at times you thought the fight might be lost, in the end you prevailed. A search of the men made clear they were brigands of some sort, and the grisly discovery of the murdered City Guard confirmed it. Rushing on, you found the monk's cave, and Master Hlam... fine. Inscrutable, he gave no indication of whether he knew anything was wrong. He spoke in riddles and invited Ilena to stay with him, shooing the rest of you away with barely a word of thanks. His eyes sparkled when she presented him with the fish she had been carrying so long.
Tired, grumpy, cold, and non-plussed by the old monk's behavior, you all made your way down the mountain, reporting to the guards at the checkpoint (equally miserable in the cold and wet). They sent a squad hurrying back up the mountain while the rest of you returned home.
Drusk: "I thought we were done for, when that manticore showed up. Fortunately Pascal and Ilena had their trick to bring it down, so Hildi and Jorin could finish it off... It still gives me shivers thinking about it. I won't speak of it anymore."

Hildigrim climbs into a chair and sighs, a small, flat smile on his lips. He looks at the fifth towel dropped dry and unused over the stool and sighs again. "Lif, can we get something warm to drink, please? And maybe a small plate of meats. Oh, and some cheese. Do we have any fruit? Soup would be wonderful right now, too." He folds his hands on the tabletop and looks at them. "I hope she knows what she's doing."
Pascal waddles in, and then proceeds to flop on the floor with a crash, “So... tired... gator... body... ain’t made... to hike...”He shivers a bit, “So cold...”

Jorin is the last to make it in. He is wearing a smile, but one that is about as battered by the wind and cold as the rest of the group. He heads over to the table Hildigrim is sitting near, the two battleaxes at his hip catch the hearth-light as he pulls them from their loops and notches them into the table with a duo of dull thuds.
He grins, sheepishly, and takes a seat next to Hildigrim, "Ah, sorry...force of habit." He leans back in the chair and takes a big breath, inhaling all the good food smells. "Aye, hot food and drink are the order of the day after such a trek."
"Oh! Poor thing," Fala the elf comes over and pets Pascal where he lies, while a mopping rag floats over and cleans up the snow around his body. "Scoot over to the fire and warm up." Turning to Hildi, she says, "I have been keeping the feast Pascal prepared ready, though you took longer than we thought."
She claps her hands and puts people to work, and soon you find yourselves eating a delicious meal prepared by Pascal, with fresh bread, soup, fruits and meats. Ale and beer are shared around from the casks Drusk and Jorin brought earlier. The atmosphere is cheery, especially once the family of halflings bring out instruments and rattle off a few merry tunes. Soon enough, the music quiets down, the food trickles to an end, and there is the quiet companionable hubbub of conversation.
The four of you are seated together, with Jalester and Renaer. The former asks, with an eyebrow raised in Renaer's direction, "That is a story worth the tale, someday, Drusk. But I understand you all had some reason for inviting Renaer to this evening?"
Jalester stops Drusk on his way out. "When you return from the mountain, you should stop at the Blackstaff's tower to report what you have found. It is on the way back here, and should save you a return trip."
(OOC: Retcon time... Did the group stop by the Blackstaff tower, either before or after reporting to the checkpoint? It may not be a big deal, but I am suspicious why Jalester singled out Drusk to mention this.)
"Oh! Poor thing," Fala the elf comes over and pets Pascal where he lies
"I suspect it might be a tummy-ache rather than the cold. Pascal avoided the manticore, but I did warn him that those thugs didn't look like they had bathed recently."

OOC > Whether you stopped at Blackstaff Tower or not is up to you, but you did report to the City Guard when you came off the mountain, who assured you they would take care of it, so you had reason to just stumble on home. Also, you have no reason to suspect that detachment of Guard to be fake, though you will have examined them closely to make sure. They were the same ones told you the mountain was off limits, but then let you pass with your writ.
