"That is a large gambling debt," Rethan says to Floon. "I am not unsympathetic, but most people who accumulate large gambling debts and are given money to pay them off with no consequences go on to continue gambling and build up new debts as large or larger. What is to prevent the same from happening in your case? We've already saved your life once. Wasn't it gambling debts that time too?"
"What is this expedition?" he asks Volo. "And how large of a fraction are you requesting?" (After all, 9/10 of what we got is still a "fraction" of it :P. Or, ya know, 10/10)
"That is a significant sum of money," he responds to Jelenn Urmbrusk. "You say you cannot tell us what the money is for, but can you tell us anything at all? Will it harm Waterdeep? Or help it in some way?"
"No, no," says Floon. "That was just a misunderstanding. They thought I was Lord Neverember, right? But...I see your point. I shall swear off gambling forev...for a year!"
-----
Volo fiddles with his sleeves. "Ahem, yes. Right to the heart of the matter. I have in mind to catalog the nature of the fey. They do keep far from the cities. I will need 5000 gold to embark on this expedition."
-----
Lady Urmbrusk looks surprised. "No, no. Nothing like that. It is entirely personal. I aim to free myself from an unsavory influence. This will be nothing but a positive thing for Waterdeep."
Mal doesn't know what to do with himself when he's not broke, or nearly so. Hearing the various offers, puts forward an idea to the group.
"Morph, why don't you and I focus on making the manor the best adventuring rest stop in the city, complete with a medical wing, a functioning tavern and inn, live entertainment, and perhaps some special treats downstairs - a haven for less savory elements of this city's fine population. We might be bringing in strangers and enemies under our roof, but like as not a few friends as well. And it's always good to know where one might find ones enemies, in a pinch. Rethan, Titus, and Laniel, perhaps between the three of you, with whatever change I have left, you might elect to follow up on the different offers we've received. I'll handle Floon, if you like - we get along well, methinks. I'm rather inclined towards the fine Lady's offer, as she does seem to be a helpful sort. A guarantee of repayment would be nice, though. Well? How does that strike us?"
"An intriguing expedition, I suppose," Rethan responds to Volo. "And I'm not unsympathetic to the fact that you were the one to hire us in the first place, setting us on the path that eventually led to our reward. But that is a large sum of money for a book. What do you hope to accomplish with this cataloging of the fae? And what would we gain from our investment, other than simply a mention in the hoped-for book?"
Morphlooks dubious at each and everyone who comes asking for money or help.
To Mel, Morphcomments,
"Money certainly brings them out of the woodwork, doesn't it?"
To Floon, Morphremarks,
"I'm sorry Floon, but perhaps you need a hard lesson. I could offer my medical help, if you need it after learning the folly of gambling with money you don't have."
To Volo, Morphgives a dubious, one eyebrow raised look,
"Really? 5000gp and you may never even return to write the book? I've heard stories of people who went looking for the fey and never returned, either killed or so charmed, they never wanted to leave. I'm not particularly keen for this endeavour, I'm sorry my friend."
To Lady Urmbrusk, Morphsays,
"Perhaps you should try one of the banks or money lenders of Waterdeep, my lady. We have expenses and running costs, we are not wealthy enough or inclined, to get into that industry ourselves."
Rethan nods to Lady Urmbrusk. "With your promise that it will only be positive for the city and a formal agreement to pay it back as you said, I believe your request is well worth considering. You're not the first person to come here this week asking for money for one reason or another, so we will have to discuss it amongst ourselves before we make any final decisions, but I can promise we will decide and respond quickly."
8000 gold is beyond what Laniel can comprehend. If he had not seen so much gold piled high in the vault, he would scarcely imagine anyone possessing that much. But it is money he owns. He imagines how high a pile it would make in his room. But a pang of guilt strikes him as he recognizes the covetous nature of his thoughts. With a deep breath, he reminds himself that he has disavowed his order, but he need not throw away all of the lessons he has learned.
When people come knocking, he is more inclined to help than to turn them away. Floon is a lost soul, as anyone can see. He needs guidance. "The money I don't care about. Like Morph, I care about what Floon will do to himself. Let's give him some direction here in the Manor. Occupy his time with something other than gambling."
Volo, on the other hand, asks too much for too little. "You want to find inspiration among the Fey? That is a heavy price to find your muse," Laniel says.
Volo, in response to much of the criticism begins to back off. "Yes, well," he says, trying to collect his thoughts. "Perhaps I have not pitched my expedition as thorough of a plan as I could have. Let me regroup and perhaps I shall return with something firmer."
Urmbrusk sees conflict among the group but she stays silent as they discuss their options. Laniel, keeping his voice low, says, "If she is who she says, we curry a lot of favor for only a little risk. It is a lot of money, I know. I will bear a higher portion of the loan if it will put your mind at ease, Morph."
Rethan nods along with Laniel. "This seems like a much lower-risk investment than, say, Volo's request. I suspect making a friend of Lady Urmbrusk (My mind keeps wanting to read 'Umbridge') could benefit us as much or more thant he money int he future. It's a large sum, but with our pooled money we have more than enough to cover the loan and still get the Manor renovated and have money left over for expenses.
"We know nothing about this person, other than what she says."
"Remember who I am. I would not even entertain this, without a lot more background checks, and insight from trusted sources, like Lady Blackstuff, or the current open Lord of Waterdeep."
Morphstresses the "I am", trying to get the others to think beyond the outward appearance.
"10,000gp is a great deal of money, and if she was not who she claims to be, we wouldn't see a single coin of it back."
"Please, don't give any money to just anyone, the vultures often come out when they smell blood. And our gold is blood to a different kind of vulture."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Titus will use insight checks on each of the three requesting funds as well, as he looks over the various candidates he turns to his friends and gives them his assessment.
Floon: 19
Titus has never met Floon before, so he is not inclined to help the man with his debt. However, he would be open to sharing the cost of this if the party feels its a worthwhile investment. He knows they will need staff in order to fully realize the tavern and he is in favor of Floon being a part of that so he can work off his debt to them.
Volo: 5
Titus is familiar with the tales of Volo, and while he is initially excited to assist with the expedition, he balks after hearing the price. "Perhaps we can reconsider this investment once we have the tavern up and running and a more reliable stream of income. But I don't think we can afford this large of a price tag right now." He says to his companions.
Masked Lord: 22
Titus is skeptical of the Masked Lord, though he is intrigued. Perhaps there is a way he can convince Lady Umbrusk to show them some measure of good faith prior to their investment. However, he is not in favor of simply giving away so much money based on what little information she has provided them.

Laniel whispers in return. "If she wants to do this above board, with formal documentation, it will lower the risk to us considerably. We will have legal recourse. But you make a valid point. We should get some references. Checking with Lady Blackstaff is an excellent start."
Volo is impossible to read. He seems excited but also confident but also distracted. Though, in your experience with him, that is probably his normal way of being.
Urmbrusk is also hard to read. She remains calm, giving away little. She exudes confidence, and perhaps irritation, at having to stoop to asking for a handout.
Rethan nods to Morph. "I have no problem consulting with Lady Blackstaff, and," he directs a nod to Titus, "with the Lord's Alliance to verify who she is. I agree that we shouldn't hand out money to just anyone. But I'm not opposed to investing *some* in connections that could benefit us in the future."
Checking with the Grey Hands, the Harpers, the Lord's Alliance, Lady Urmbrusk's references, and even Mal'spersonal network reveal a consistent story that Lady Urmbrusk is rumored to be one of the Masked Lords and that her reputation as a noblewoman is unimpeachable. She is said to have one or two unsavory alliances. When anyone is asked if she will make good on her loan, they all say that she certainly will. In fact, she likely has the money already, but it is tied up in property, ships, personal loans to friends, and unsold merchandise. When asked why she will not borrow from any of her wealthy friends, the clearest answer is that she does not wish to be indebted to any that are her equals or betters for fear of embarrassment. In fact, the party's inquiries will likely start the rumor mill churning, leading to some mild personal embarrassment as it is, though less than if she were to borrow from a friend or bank.
Satisfied that the risk is likely small, the party agree to Urmbrusk's loan. She is effusive in her gratitude and promises that it will be worth their while. She promises them that, in return for their generosity and understanding, she has provided each with a special letter of recommendation that will grant them free access to one of numerous private trainers, scholars, libraries, and educators in Waterdeep for the duration of the loan (one year; At level 8, every player may take an extra feat!)
Floon is also extremely relieved to be free of his debt, even if it is just transfer that debt to more savory debt holders. He agrees to work part time at the Manor, for which he earns tips. Each day he works grants him half a gold towards his debt. The pace at which he works (which is not noteworthy, nor is it lazy) ensures he will pay of his debt to the party in about 4 years, unless he puts his tips towards the debt as well. So far, he has kept the tips...and stayed out of trouble. He has been caught rolling dice a few times at the Manor, for which he has been scolded and this behavior stops fairly quickly. Floon is especially good at chatting up the customers and listening to gossip. He proves to be a useful asset in Mal'snetwork.
By the time the Manor is fully functional and building a customer base, the party has spent a lot of time exploring the shops for adventuring gear. Nobody seems set on fully retiring to a quiet life of tavern ownership.
Morph:
Golorrgrows restless over the weeks it takes to get the Manor up and running. "It is time to pass me along," Golorr says. "I am gaining nothing here now. Give me to someone interesting."
It is the day after opening night when a note arrives addressed to Laniel, Morph, and Rethan. Titusand Malwould hear news of this soon enough through their own connections, but Lady Blackstaff is the first to express her concerns to the party.
"No sign of the Clockwork Dragon," reads the note. "Rumor is that it has left the city, though not by boat or cart. Evidence points to the artifact going into Undermountain. Krennic may be taking the device to the Mad Mage. If so, disaster looms. Convince your allies to join you in entering the Yawning Portal to track down Krennic. Steel yourselves. Mythsighs,
