Alwin blinked losing himself in a panic as he watched his companions cross the river and remembering the last river they tried crossing. He just sighed as it hit him that he was alone on his edge - this group was forcing him to try something new at almost every corner. He just slowly approached the edge walking until swimming was needed to cross.
"Thanks Altani, there's some weird stuff in here. This whole thing is made of metal. It could be a hundred years old!
What are these marks?"
Kestrell points out the engraved lines and trapezoid shaped mark to Altani.
"Does anyone recognize this writing? Maybe this whole place was used for some sort of magical ceremony."
Kestrell does an arcana check to see i the trapezoid mark, writing, and lines are anything he's familiar with. Arcana: 14
When he spies the dirt covered pouch, Kestrell will pick it up.
"I've found something!"
The stamped mark and writing on the metal of the lean-to don't seem particularly magical in nature to the sorcerer, but while the engraved lines on the island's surface also don't strike Kestrell as 'arcane' per se, there is something familiar about them and the half-elf recalls hearing of rituals performed by different kinds of spell casters that utilise circles and other drawn shapes to help focus and channel magical forces.
Picking up the pouch, Kestrell dusts and wipes away the coated grime to reveal an otherwise unblemished chain purse. Handling the small bag, the sorcerer feels small objects within and hears a *clinking* and *clacking* sound as though the bag were filled with pieces of stone or glass.

Stowing his shield and doing his best to seal his gear against intrusion by they water, Alwin braves the now black, eel infested water. As his stroke carries him through the water towards the small rocky island, the fighter tries to reassure himself that the glimmers of movement that he detects are nothing more than momentary reflections of the mostly cloud draped moon overhead. However, it is only moments before the nervous half-elf detects the unmistakable feeling of long, slithering bodies swirling around his legs, torso and, more worriedly, seeking to entwine themselves around his arms.
[OOC] The swim is almost 20', so at half-movement swimming (15') but using Alwin's full action (dash) to move another 15', the half-elven fighter will cross in one round... though he still needs to get by the eels. Dex save DC12 or 6 piercing damage. Luckily, his athletics roll of 14 beats the 10 required to swim free, and he'll make the far side of the island even if he takes damage.

Much of what is inside the cart has completely deteriorated, coated in muck and slime, and in some instances even gnawed on by eels. One seemingly intact wooden box disintergrates in the barbarian's large hands, scattering its contents with a clatter across the island's stony floor. Kneeling down, Mazin finds a number of gold and silver coins (32gp and 29sp) stamped with an unfamiliar emblem, a crossed wand and hammer with a quarter sunburst rising from the top section of the intersecting items. A small delicate silver locket and chain and a gleaming metal decanter also fell from the ruined box. Nothing else within the cart appears to have survived the ravages of time and disuse.
Mazin will show the others what he found "Anyone recognize these symbols on the coins? I've never seen them before." Mazin will also try to open the silver locket, if it looks like it can open.
He will look up as Alwin makes it over to the island. "Ah, Alwin! You finally came over. What took you so long. Here, have some eel! Oh, take a look at these things I found!" ((OOC: How do people want to split the loot?))
Mazin will check on Wazzock to see how she's doing.
Once things start settling down for the night, he will take out his Unfinished Dryad Carving and begin working on it again. (Woodcarver's Tools10)
"Hey everyone, I think all of these lines and markings were for some ceremony or ritual. Some casters would use shapes to channel their magic."
Kestrell opens up the bag.
Inside the chain pouch, Kestrell finds twelve polished brown, knucklebone sized stones, each bearing a distinctive rune engraved upon it.

The clasp on the delicate silver locket seems to resist Mazin's efforts, perhaps due to it not being opened in a long time, and partly because of the relatively tiny size of the item in the goliath's massive, calloused hands.
Wazzok seems to have settled into a deep, restful state of unconsciousness, but the half-orcs skin remains cold to the touch and her complexion remains somewhat pale.
Later on, sharing the warmth of the fire next to the unconscious warrior priestess, Mazin continues working on his dryad carving, and while he makes no mistakes with the piece, neither does he manage to capture or reproduce his muses essence, at least not to the large craftsman's satisfaction. Perhaps it is the tenseness of their situation, or perhaps his unfamiliarity with such a delicately beautiful subject.
[OOC] Trying to open the locket, at least without breaking it, is tricky for the massive warrior. Make a dexterity check DC 15. Regardless of success or failure, read the spoiler, but if Mazin fails the check, the locket breaks apart during his efforts to open it.
Inside the silver locket's interior are two exquisitely painted images. The first appears to be a family portrait of a smiling Elvish family, a well dressed man and woman of indeterminate age and a young boy wearing a cheeky grin and holding a sling of some kind. The second image is of a small party of disparate individuals - a broad-shouldered, bespectacled dwarven man with a wild grey beard wearing an apron and with a large hammer over one shoulder; a talll, handsome clean shaven human male dressed in cerulean robes and bearing a staff topped by a metal crescent moon; and a beautiful elvish woman of middling height but confident posture, dressed in forest green leathers. A sickle hangs at the woman's hip and curled at her feet is an impressively large wolf, it's head raised to show off its bright green eyes to good effect.

Examining the stones together, both Kestrell and Altani detect something Elvish in the way that the symbols are formed, despite the fact that neither recognises the runes themselves and being certain that the runes are not of the Elvish language. Something in the formation of the runes reminds Altani of the engraved lines and swirls on the island's surface, and the centaur feels almost certain that the stones and the carved sigil are related somehow.
[OOC] Both Kes and Altani speak Elvish, but the language is not Elvish, though something about the style of the writing seems vaguely Elvish. Based on Altani's previous 18 investigation check, she thinks that it's possible that whoever created the symbol on the island's surface also created the rune stones.

History Check: Coins DC15
Perhaps you've seen the symbol in an old book or encountered it etched onto an ancient map, or maybe just heard it described in a story of yore told by some minstrel or sage, but you somehow know that the emblem pertains to an old alliance of elves, dwarves and humans (and possibly other races of the region) that was known as The Bastion. You recall that this alliance founded a keep, citadel or maybe even a city centuries ago, but it was rumoured to have met with a tragic though largely unrecorded fate.
History Check: Locket DC20
Where you saw it you only later recall, but noticing the tiny but perfectly painted symbol on a signet ring worn by the elvish man and on a small amulet hanging around the neck of the boy in the portrait, you recognise the symbol of the royal family of the Elvish Kingdom of Leyinthalar - three towering trees (the centremost one tallest) each with a star above it (the centremost one largest).
