"Sildar, I'm sorry we've delayed getting you to Phalendin so long already. If you will permit me to assist you, I will gladly help you with the healing you requested." Rastin prepares to Lay Hands on Sildar to ensure he is healthy enough to make the journey.
"Sildar, I'm sorry we've delayed getting you to Phalendin so long already. If you will permit me to assist you, I will gladly help you with the healing you requested." Rastin prepares to Lay Hands on Sildar to ensure he is healthy enough to make the journey.
Sildar thanks the paladin. Sildar has always looked up to those warriors who chose honor, faith and justice. Sildar had considered the same approach, but though he is a good man, he sometimes had to make certain "compromises" which would not fit squarely with the ideals espoused by paladins throughout Neverwinter.
"Let's go," Sildar says, invigorated and focused after receiving healing from Rastin.
The men exit the cave. At the insistence of Autzen they stop by to check on the bound goblin in Klarg's cave, but he is nowhere to be found. Apparently he escaped, but rather than assist his other fellow goblins, he must have chosen to run. Or of course, perhaps he wanted to alert someone….
When the men exit the cave, Sildar notices a headless dead goblin and a foul odor. Sildar was familiar with the stench of death, especially goblin death, but he spotted the defiled goblin remains and found the reason for the foul order (and Autzen's dinner the day of the battle). Sildar made a mental note that though the companions seem noble and just, perhaps a wickedness lies within as evidenced by what the Lords Alliance refers to as "war crimes."
"What's done is done" Sildar thought to himself, and the party continued to the town of Phandalin.
Ok men, congrats, you have completed Part 1 of the Lost Mines of Phandelver Campaign. Each of you receive 275 experience points.
The Cragmaw Cave portion of the campaign is meant to introduce you to basic D&D battle/ability mechanics. You all learned about attack actions, movement actions, advantage/disadvantage, inspiration, rolls, modifiers, stealth, surprise, perception checks, intimidation checks, and arcane checks, cover, etc.
Since you are headed to Phandalin (Part 2 of the campaign) you will need to rely on new ability checks, e.g., history/lore (recalling facts about a specific location, person, item), insight (determine if someone is lying), persuasion (convincing someone to take your point of view), and investigation. Also, now that you are lvl 2, with more options and abilities, I suggest you contemplate more "group combat" strategies. Part 1 was about you handling basic combat against weaker opponents, i.e., move, attack, end turn. Now all of you should think about how to use your abilities to set your teammates up for better attacks, and creative ability checks.
Moreover, thought there are plenty of side quests and such in Phandalin, you will have the opportunity to roleplay much more, as you will interact with the townsfolk and such. Note that Phandalin is a hub of sorts for all campaign quests. You have the main story line and quest line (Wave Echo Cave), but you do not necessarily need to bee line to Gundren and the cave immediately. Nearly everywhere you visit in Phandalin you'll find someone offering a question. Up to you where thee adventure goes.
Finally, we are going to also abide by spell component and eating rules. Consequently, you will need to visit merchants and such to get necessary supplies. Currency and spell components will be important from here on out. We are on the honor system (but I reserve the right to spot check), therefore please track provisions, spell components and currency inventory accurately. Trying to go "meta" with this game as you gain experience and level up.
I will “fast travel” the group to the entrance to Phandalin with Sildar. I will provide a map and you simply need to tell me which area you are visiting and I will post accordingly. Again, congrats gentlemen. The next phase has begun.)

Dungeon Master Private Game - Lost Mines of Phandelver.
Rastin, Autzen, Solaris, Adolmain and Sildar reached the town entrance of Phandalin at the break of dawn, with the supplies and two oxen which they hid the day of the goblin ambush. The party is more weathered than they were just but a few days ago, when this collection of "heroes" met for the first time to deliver some supplies for a price. They have fulfilled their mission, though it appears the mission has expanded, as they all have agreed to search for Gundren as riches, glory and honor await.
The town consists of forty or fifty simple log buildings, some built on old fieldstone foundations. More old ruins — crumbling stone walls covered in ivy and briars — surround the newer houses and shops, showing how this must have been a much larger town in centuries past. Most of the newer buildings are set on the sides of the cart track, which widens into a muddy main street of sorts as it climbs toward a ruined manor house on a hillside at the east side of town.
As you approach, you see children playing on the town green and townsfolk tending to chores or running errands at shops. Many people look up as you approach, but all return to their business as you go by.
Sildar provides you a map of the city (OOC: See spoiler above). He's conveniently marked places of interest to help you navigate throughout the city.
"Thank you friends. The Lords Alliance and myself thank you." Sildar says. "Please take the supplies to Elmer Barthen at Barthen's Provisions. He will pay you the 10GP a piece, and also tell him that I owe your party 50 GP for capturing me. I've marked the map I've supplied you."
Sildar continues, "After you've dropped off the supplies, I suggest you secure lodgings for the night. I will meet you tomorrow here, with a plan I hope. I will be the Stonehill Hill, which I suggest where you secure lodging. We will meet there when the sun is above us, tomorrow. In the meantime, I'm going to search for my friend, Larno Albrek, as he may be able to tell us the location of the goblin castle. Feel free to investigate his whereabouts, and/or the location of the castle. Somebody had to know something in this wretched town."
Sildar begins to walk away, but he looks back with a serious look on his face. "And be careful. The Lords Alliance has tried to get this town under control, but we are a long ways away from that. Bandits, and specifically, the "Rebrands" are a dirty bunch, and will kill you just for looking at them sideways. Keep your wits about you, be observant, and alert. A lot of people enter this town never to be seen again. Don't be "that guy."" he smirks as he walks down the street, alone, not bothering for a response from the party.
(OOC: Ok, simply let me know where on the map you are going. Again, I highly recommend using your persuasion, insight, history and perception checks. I encourage role-play here as you'll have ample opportunities to interact with NPCs. The town is small, so you can visit places on the map fairly simply. I do not need marching orders or locations as I'll assume you are just together walking. Of course if you split up, please let me know. Everyone can assume they did a LONG REST on the way back from the cave. Good luck.)
Before Sildar walks away Adolmain mentions that we incurred some serious injuries and utilized more of our supplies then we had planned having to execute a rescue it would help us recoup some loses if we perhaps got 100hp for our journey this far. persuasion16
Solaris waits for Sildar answer following there monetary compensation haggle and after the deal is struck states the following “ we should get these provisions to Barthens and collect our money I would like to see about getting a better Bow then this one as it stinks of Goblin not to mention I’m sick of looking at these oxen.”
Before Sildar walks away Adolmain mentions that we incurred some serious injuries and utilized more of our supplies then we had planned having to execute a rescue it would help us recoup some loses if we perhaps got 100hp for our journey this far. persuasion16
Sildar turns around and faces Adolmain. For the first time they’ve met, he smiles. Sildar is grateful for the rescue, as the companions could have easily continued to town without a rescue. Instead, they risk their lives for him
“I’m sorry Adolmain, you are correct. My life is worth more than 50 GP. 100 GP it is. Tell Elmer to pay you from my account with him. I truly appreciate your help....but note, more work is needed. 100 GP is nothing compared to what we’ll receive if we rescue Gundren and find Echo Cave.”
Sildar walks off, not turning around.
(OOC - since Sildar is extremely favorable towards you for rescuing him, I set the DC at 15. Adolmain check passed. Also awarding Adolmain inspiration for taking the lead and doing a creative check)
Adolmain agrees with Solaris “yes let’s get to Barthans Provisions and get our money, as food and lodging cost and we will need the money to also restore our expendables. He may have some good information as to where to go or who to speak to for our forthcoming adventures.”
”Agreed, let’s go collect our payment and then make our way to the lodging recommended by Sildar.” Rastin is anxious to get business settled so they can begin exploring the town to learn what it has to offer.
The adventurers head to Barthen's Provisions for some coin, equipment, and apparently, insight on where Tiefling curious creatures may be had. As you head towards the trading post with oxen and supplies in tow, the townspeople look at your with suspicion. None of you are human, and you feel eyes watching and judging. The town has seen better days, with homeless beggars about, and rough looking characters, some of which appear to be bandits - with their blood stained gear and eyes that suggest they have no qualms with killing for the spoils of combat.
You reach the trading the post and enter the main store. Its shelves stock most ordinary goods and supplies, including backpacks, bedrolls, rope, and rations. Curiously, you notice no weapons or armor. Perhaps another places will have the means for protection…and death.
"Damnit Ander and Thistle!" you hear someone say, "Where is my wheat ale private reserve?!!! I need a damn morning drink or I may kill someone!"
Elmar Barthen looks at you as you enter, composes himself, and with a smile greets you, "Adventurers! Welcome! I see you have the wagon of supplies! So you must be the ones my good friend Gundren hired. Figures, a dwarf not trusting humans to do important work. Where is Gundren and Sildar?" he says. In a much more even keel and friendly tone he turns to his helpers, "Go unload wagon and feed those oxen. Thank you. My ale can wait I suppose…" he sighs.
He returns his eyes to you. "If you need supplies, I have pretty much everything, but no weapons or armor. My prices are fair. Nothing fancy here of course, with the thieves and bandits about in this town I won't risk holding expensive items here. Most everything sells for under 25GP each. So please, take a look at my wares!" He pulls out a coin purse and gives each of you 10 GP each, with a hopeful look that you'll give the gold right back as your purchase supplies.
Elmar looks out the trading post to the streets and sees a few bandits and thugs walking about. "This town has gone to total goblin shit" he complains. "Is there anybody that cares about law and order around here? Just a shame. A damn shame." he says as he begins looking for his missing morning ale.
(OOC: Feel free to question anyone in the trading post. You can buy any Adventure Gear that is priced under 25GP in the PHB (check adventure gear link). No weapons or armor however. I suggest you buy at least 5 days of rations, as you will now be required to eat a full day ration each day. Also, you will now need spell components. You don't necessarily need to buy spell components. You can forage them or use other means, but I will be checking to ensure you have components. I will assume you have at least enough to cast your spells and such once (e.g., I believe the cleric orb attack spell that Nick's sorcerer uses requires a diamond so I'll assume he has one (don't worry nick, the diamond does not disappear after you cast the spell according to spell description I read, so no need to buy another).
Adolmain replies “Thank you for our payment and Sildar is back he arrived with us earlier today. He ran into some trouble along the way which we were able to help him with and as such he told us to mention to you that we could be paid 100gp from his account. It appears as though you have some great equipment here and we are in need. It is a shame when a town falls to crime. We were wondering where we could take various items of value to trade for gp? Also we are in the market for information that we picked up on our travels. We heard tell of a place called Cragmaw Castle and that it has a Spider problem any idea where we could learn more about that? “ Adolmain will use persuasion12 to help gather information in the event he is fearful of telling it due to criminal elements.
Solaris uses insight22 to determine if he can tell anything that the shopkeeper is holding back from Adolmain. ”Also where can we find a weapon and armor supplier?

"Ran into some trouble?!" Elmar gasps. "Is Sildar and Gundren ok? Where is Gundren?" he asks, with visible concern. "You need to find his brother Nundro and Tharden and let them know! Oh dear! They are camped somewhere outside town. I haven't seen the brothers in a tenday and I expect the brothers to return any day now to resupply!"
"As for the Cragmaw Castle, I've heard rumors but know nothing of the goblin hideout. The damn goblins and Rebrands have been terrorizing this community, robbing people everywhere. I also have never heard of this Spider you speak of."
Solaris eyes Elmar, and doesn't think he's holding anything back.
"As for weapons and supplies, go to the Lionshield Coster trading post. They hold some weapons and armour. Be careful though when you head there. The Rebrands are probably waking up from their drunken slumber and it is about that time for them to rob and harass people on the street. I wish someone would do something about those thugs!"
Elmar takes Solaris' and Adolmain's coin and gives them the items requested (and the 100 GP from Sildar's account), shaking his head, hoping the dwarf and human are ok. "What are these items you want to sell? I'm always looking to buy…at a fair price of course."
(OOC: Going forward won't tell you whether you passed certain ability checks - you'll need to deduce whether your ability check passed by my description. Good insight roll nick for Solaris).
“A thug problem, huh? How bad is it and what kind of bounty might be involved?”
Having rested up, Autzen is feeling restless. A little in-town action sounds fantastic.
“And where might I find your towns finest ale?”
Elmar looks at Autzen approvingly, "Yes Tiefling! These Rebrands are everywhere! Despicable crew, capable of murder, **** and everything else. I hear they are based out of Tresdandor Manor. I frequently see those drunk fools hanging around there. But if you're looking for ale and those thugs, you'll find them at Gristra the Dwarf's rundown rundown tap house, the Sleeping Giant. Be careful though, it is a dirty, dangerous watering hole at the end of Phandalin’s main street. It is frequented by those Redbrand thugs. I suspect they have a bunch of treasure at Tresdandor Manor, and nobody would slight you for killing those Rebrands and taking the treasure for your own. But consider the Sleeping Giant first to learn more about the Manor. Cheap ale, cheap thugs, and cheap women can be had there."

Elmar looks at the teeth and frog with disgust, but he sees value in the items. "I won't even ask where you got those gold teeth. I'll give you 1 gold for all three of them. As for that frog, now sure who in the Gods would want that. 20GP is my offer for it. My final offer."
