The five of you make your way through the secret tunnel. It's small so you have to make your way single file, but eventually you reach the exit. The exit itself is a fairly heavy flagstone that would be difficult to discern as a secret door if you didn't know about it. Together, you have no issues moving the heavy stone and making your way out.
You now find yourselves inside what appears to be a cellar or basement of some kind. The smell of beer and fermentation hangs in the air. There are kegs of ale here along with various brewing supplies and a bunch of worthless clutter. You see stairs that lead up to a small wooden door above.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Zyllee looks at the cellar full of beer and brewing equipment. She glances at her friends and then moves stealthily up the stairs and to the wooden door. After listening to make sure noone is on the other side she will open the door and move quietly inside.
Callan breathes a sigh of relief. "Glad that's over. Let's get cleaned up just a bit before going up shall we? I imagine even the drunkest people up there would notice the way we smell right now."
The gnome spends a good bit of time using a cantrip to clean himself and the others off, including Circe, who looks increasingly ready to maul someone over this whole affair
Hugo is halfway done cleaning himself off with prestidigitation when Callan mentions it. He pauses, looks up and whispers "yup, this is the easy part." "It was not vomiting for the last hour that was the real triumph!" The bard helps clean Zyllee and the two pretty boys up as well before nodding to Zyllee to proceed.
The party manages to clean themselves off as best they can. After that, Zyllee goes up the stairs quietly and uses her enormous ears to try and pick up on any activity on the other side.
She hears the noise of a kettle whistling, then a woman says, "Tea's almost ready dear. We have a big day ahead of us today with the big birthday coming upon us soon."
A man replies, "Aye, can't believe the old man is gonna be 111 years old. Least we've already got a good amount of ale ready to go."
The two continue talking and bantering. From the sounds of it, they seem like just a normal family.
"Circe would like me to tell you that she is a Tressym. Or a cat if, no, no I'm not calling him that Circe... Anyways, or a cat if you can't remember the proper name, definitely not a bird. In any case, that sounds like a good idea." Callan turns back to his familiar with a grin, "How about you go and see if they have any of that cream I wanted to get you earlier in the kitchens?"
Zyllee laughs softly at her friends. " A distraction would be perfect right now. It would be preferable to exit this place without being spotted. We are counting on you Circe!"
The five of you hide just barely back inside the tunnel as Circe is unleashed. The cat trots up the stairs and sits down to look up at the door. She looks back down the stairs with an apprehensive look then looks back up at the door.
"Meow."
No response. She scratches at the door a few times.
"Meow."
Eventually the door is opened. "Oh my goodness!" a woman exclaims. "Look at you! Aren't you a cute little kitty!"
Another young girl's voice just yells, "KITTY, MOMMY IT'S A KITTY WITH WINGS!!"
There's some rustling followed by a discussion on where Circe could have come from. Eventually the discussion dies down while the parents figure out what to do.
"You want some milk, nice kitty?" the young girl asks.
"Meow."
Circe takes her sweet time and drinks the milk slowly. She also gets brushed by the young girl.
Hugo whispers to Callan "what is she doing?" "We don't want an, ah, 'encore' from the next Penzance over here." He glances as Floon.
OOC Frederick Penzance is Hugo's favorite actor from the local theaters, specifically the fancy, high end productions only the wealthiest folk get to attend.
Callan looks irritated, "She's getting back at us for taking her into the smelly sewer. We get to sit down here and wait while she takes her time getting doted on... I should've known."
Over the link the gnome asks, "Could you at least let us know what you see up there?"
Hugo shrugs and whispers "can't blame her." "Maybe I should go have some milk next. Drama over here can go last. He's the one who decided it was a good idea to hang out in the Dock Ward at night. Volo had better have my book, and signed!"
Circe replies, "Fine. It's a small halfling home. There are three of them, a mother, a father, and a little girl. The kitchen is near the living room and there are stairs leading up to a second floor. The front door leading outside the home is not far from the basement door and there are also windows that you could potentially squeeze through. I don't think the rude stupid one will fit."
"I guess I can try and lead them up the stairs for you. I'm going meow," she says.
Suddenly, you all hear Circe bolting around upstairs and eventually goes up even further into the home. The family also goes after her to make sure she doesn't destroy things and to figure out what's going on.
"The coast is clear meow. Hurry up," she says over the mental link.

The five of you rush to make it out of the home without issue. Floon has some difficulty due to his severe injuries but is aided by Renaer. Eventually, Circe manages to catch up with the group as well. You all now stand in the middle of Fishgut Alley in the Dock Ward.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Callan breathes a sigh of relief as they make it out without further incident. "Thank you Circe, that could have been very awkward explaining what we were doing exiting their basement."
He turns to Floon, "Here, sorry for holding out on you, but I had to be sure I didn't need this for anything else, let me see that." Taking out a pair of small vials, he pours the contents of one into the other and shakes it vigorously before slowly dripping the mixture onto Floon's worst injuries, they soon visibly heal. "And that's it, that's the last of my magic for today. Come on, Volo's waiting for us back at the Yawning Portal."
Hugo grins as they rush a bit down Fishgut Alley and are joined shortly there after by their liberator. "Well done Circe! It won't be long before we sing of your deeds if you keep it up!"
"Normally benign
she was inclined
to redefine
what it means to be feline."
"Their fates intertwined
she had the spine
to undermine
the eye, much maligned."
"If she could reach him in time
on a quest most clandestine
through the depths that serpentined
through the wretched and begrimed,"
"perhaps she might still find
that he was completely fine
despite his excessive whine
and free him from his confines."
"Although she did stop to dine
on a gift of the bovine
she still gave him the sign
and to freedom he beelined."
"She had been his lifeline
and I am thus inclined
to forgive the theft of thine twine,
Circle, the most divine of all felines!"
"Sorry, Circe, poetry is not my forte, but I tried. Shall we get our friend back to our favorite author, or would you prefer to stay behind? I, for one, am not inclined."
Tossing a ball of thread from his disguise kit to Circle to play with, the bard smiles widely at Callan and Zyllee and walks proudly down the alley with his head held high.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Zyllee breathes a sigh of relief as they return to the surface. " It is so good to have fresh air. That was almost more than i could stand. " The moon elf looks up at the stars shining overhead. " Good job everyone. We cant relax too much though. We are still in a bad part of the city. " She walks ahead quickly looking in every direction for signs of trouble.
"So, let me ask you all... If the scariest thing in there was not an ooze, goblins, a guy with his beholder boss's eyes tattooed on his head, vicious bird men, walking brains or a creepy tentacle faced guy but rather simply the absolute stench and filth of the place, does that mean I have the potential to be a truly great adventurer, or the absolute worst adventurer? I'm not really sure."
"I know one thing, my most valuable bit of magic down there was my simplest one, as I definitely would have died within the first five minutes without it." He continues to clean himself up with prestidigitation despite looking mostly clean at this point. "I don't even want to know what crawled inside my...various parts... while wading through that place!"
Floon seems incredibly grateful to Callan after the healing. He is now fully able to stand and walk on his own without Renaer's help. With grateful tears in his eyes, he gives the gnome a giant hug. "Oh thank you, thank you so much Master Gnome! I felt as though I was on death's door after what those awful people did to me *sniff*. This is the nicest, the absolute nicest, thing any strangers have ever done for me. I am so grateful to you all, Callan, Zyllee, Hugo, and Renny. Let it be known that you have all gained a valuable friend and ally in Floon Blagmaar on this day!"
Renaer chuckles at the display, then says, "Oh Floon, you are a gentle and kind soul. You remind me of an old friend from home. After the kidnapping, I felt so guilty that I just had to help. This is all my fault and my business, Floon. You just happened to get caught up in it."
Meanwhile, Circe is glaring daggers at Hugo after the poem. As he drops the ball of thread to the ground, she simply looks at it for a moment, then continues glaring at Hugo. She taps the ball once slowly with a paw, then leaves it be.
Replying to Hugo, Floon says, "I for one think all of you are already GREAT adventurers! You saved me from a terrible, terrible fate after all. I don't know what they would have done with me! Especially that terrifying tentacle monster with the brain pet!"He shudders.
---
The five you eventually make your way back to the Yawning Portal. The tavern appears to be back in business and Volo is seen drinking alone at the bar when you arrive. As he sees you with Floon, he springs up and immediately rushes to embrace all of you as well as Floon.
"You did it!" he exclaims. "Floon, my friend, I am so glad you're alright."
Then, he looks to the three of you and says, "I knew you three were special!" However, his expression quickly changes to a more sheepish one. "Listen, about your reward...I confess that I have but few coins to spare. But never let it be said that Volo reneges on a promise! Allow me to present something much more valuable.”
He holds out a scroll tube. “The deed to a remarkable property here in Waterdeep! We’ll need a magistrate to witness the transfer of ownership. I’ll arrange a meeting with one after you’ve inspected the estate and deemed it satisfactory."
Renaer seems a bit surprised by this, but looks to the three of you and smiles as he thinks this is well deserved.
Zylle grins happy to see their reunion. Her eyes sparkle as ahe hears the news of the property. She begins speaking rapidly in her excitement. " This is amazing. Im so excited. A home at last. Guys, arent you excited?"
"I don't know the answer to that Hugo, but that mindflayer was by far the scariest thing for me. Those monsters enslave people, enthrall their minds, and when they have no further use for you, they eat your brain. We are immensely lucky that thing left rather than confront us." The gnome shudders.
He flushes as Floon gushes over him. "It was ah... I'm sure others would have... Oh, uh, I guess you're welcome."
---
Later, when Volo proffers the deed, his eyes go wide. A slow grin etches itself on its face. This could mean the world to his companions. And it certainly could be good for himself as well. The room he had at the guild met his needs, but that was about it. A proper home would be wonderful.
