Jambiya and Erric, you leave the beach and head west into the tall grass. You're walking into the wind and pretty much by accident discover a fox 15 feet away after walking only 15 feet into the grass. Speaking kindly, and keeping your distance, Jambiya, you communicate briefly with the creature. It is able to tell you that it has seen no people in its lifetime. It also has no feelings about any ships, wrecked or otherwise.
At the same time the smalls begin venturing into the tall grass, Maldorn, you begin examining the beach. As you do, you notice the same giant crab Jambiya noticed not too far away. The shape the little goblin girl wondered if it was a rock also begins moving. They are both moving toward the rowboat ... and they appear to be doing it quickly. The sand that hasn't been smoothed by the waves is pockmarked with millions of divots — just the kind of tracks you'd imagine a giant crab would leave behind.
As the fox bounds away, Jambiya stands up to look at Erric. "We only got so close because we were downwind, and it could not smell us. It says it has never seen people before, and the wrecked ship doesn't affect it at all. I think we probably scared the poor thing. At least the ship doesn't give off some horrible scary vibes the animals feel. That's something!" she says brightly.

ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. Here's my D&D stuff. I love it so.
OK, so Erric is running back toward the rowboat. It was 25 feet to get to the tall grass, and he and Jambiya walked another 15 into the grass, so he and she are 40 feet from the boat. Ebokk and Anafrey are standing by the boat. Maldorn walked 10 feet north of the boat before spotting the crabs. He has now attempted to shoot an arrow at the closest crab, which is 60 feet away from him (70 feet from the boat) and heading south, but his bowstring sprung.
I wish I could have cloned Anafrey before Bunny removed her from the campaign. I've created a reasonable facsimile, which I will run like another NPC unless anyone has an issue with it. If we had known before you left the ship, I think I could have come up with a reason for her to stay aboard, but since you all went to shore on the boat together, this might be helpful. She's been broody, so it won't be that weird if she's fairly silent and just protective.
I was assuming the grass obscured our view, right? Eric's running out of the grass until he can see why Maldorn is yelling - if he can see an actual threat and not just the crabs (that he didn't realize were actually that large) he will use vicious mockery on it. If he can tell the crabs are actually a threat he will do the same to the crab, uncertain whether his spell would work on a crab.
A bit closer to the rowboat now, Maldorn will pass both his broken longbow and Sagitta to Ebokk: "Here, friend, safe-keep these for now or leave them on the boat if you'd rather fight."
He then turns back to the crabs, pulls both of his daggers out of his belt sheaths, and calls for assistance: "Reric, Jambyia come over here. Nicerivers and I will need help here! Don't let them get close to the boat or we may have to swim."
Maldorn nods to Anafrey reinforcing his plea to intercept the crabs before the damage their vessel. He then walks forward to engage in melee with the crabs as far away from the rowboat as he can, making sure Anafrey is following.
"I hate close-quarters fighting," he reminds everyone.
Jambiya has a different idea. "Hey!" she shouts in crab. "Hey, over here!" she waves. "What's wrong, what have we done? We don't mean any harm!"
At this point she is just trying to get their attention, to see if they deviate from attacking the boat and her friends. Her fingers start to crackle with energy as she Readies an Eldritch Blast to loose if the crabs continue to advance on the rowboat.

No, Jambiya did not run back. Her very first action upon turning around and seeing them is to get two crabs with one stone, as it were, by calling out to find out if we can avoid the combat, while also trying to distract them away from the rowboat.

Hearing Maldorn shout, Jambiya turns toward the beach and immediately sees a giant crustacean flying across the sand toward her friends. "Hey!" she shouts, tapping into her ability to communicate with animals. "Hey, over here!" she waves one arm. "What's wrong? What have we done? We don't mean any harm!" The fingers of the arm not waving start to crackle with energy. She doesn't know if it's the sound of the wind overpowering her words or if the creature just doesn't care, but it doesn't appear to be deviating from its path. (Go ahead and roll to attack Black, Jambiya!)
Ebokk stands like a statue, his eyes watching the oncoming crab with horror.
Erric dashes back through the tall grass as Jambiya shouts over his head. He can't see what's going on, so he exits the grass onto the sand, stopping five feet short of Anafrey and turns to see not one, but two giant crabs scuttling like mad straight for them. As he judges the closest creature to be just out of range, he begins formulating an appropriate pun for when it is close enough. (Ready attack. If you'd like to compose your pun, Erric, go ahead!)
As everyone watches, the two crabs they saw continue forward at an alarming speed. To their horror, they realize there are even more of the creatures. Several are just behind the further creature and a few have crawled out of the surf. One of those has joined the first crab and the two are close enough to decapitate anyone with their giant claws.
WIS save: 4
Erric all but sings his clever verse, lacing it with magic, but a huge gust of wind occurs at exactly the same time, and many of his words are tossed away and lost forever.
Maldorn tosses his damaged bow and pet snake at the dwarf and turns back toward the crabs, drawing his daggers. He steps away from the boat and swings with both daggers at ... (Maldorn, see the map. You're upon both Black and Purple, and you can attack either or both. Roll!)
Anafrey steps forward (space to be determined), drawing both her rapier and a dagger, and attacks ... (I'll wait until Jambiya and Maldorn have rolled)
Everyone looking at Erric can see a wave of magic pulse from his mouth, and everyone can hear him singing out a verse that looks like it could be very compelling, but the words that get through the wind are, "____ confounded _____ _____ ____ crustaceans! __ ___ old ____ ____ ____ crabs, ____ this ___ ridiculous!"
He draws his bow (assume I should wait for attack rolls till it's my turn - it's been a while!)...

Rolling for Jambiya: Eldritch Blast attack: 20, damage: 6 force damage
"Hey, over here!" she waves one arm. "What's wrong? What have we done? We don't mean any harm!" The fingers of the arm not waving start to crackle with energy. She doesn't know if it's the sound of the wind overpowering her words or if the creature just doesn't care, but it doesn't appear to be deviating from its path. She raises her other arm and a blast of green white energy flies at the (black) giant crab, but the energy ricochets off its shell, seeming to do no damage.
Maldorn tosses his damaged bow and pet snake at the dwarf and turns back toward the crabs, drawing his daggers. He steps away from the boat and swings with both daggers at the newcomer (purple). The first dagger is blunted by the creature's shell, but the second finds its way into the soft meat between its eye stems. A squelching sound and a spurt of some kind of crab juice is the hunter's reward. The creature looks harmed, but is still on its many legs.
Anafrey steps forward (E10), drawing both her rapier and a dagger, and attacks the (black) crab. (rapier attack: 8, damage: 8 piercing damage — dagger attack: 22, damage: 4 piercing damage) Her rapier pierces the creature's unarmored shoulder as it rears back, but when she thrusts with her dagger, it deflects the blow with its massive claw. It is also harmed, but still standing.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Jambiya, frustrated at her miss, but not ready to back down, fires another blast at the (black) crab harassing her friends. (Eldritch Blast attack: 19, damage: 2 force damage) The blast flies in under the lip of the creature's shell, causing it to make a strangled cry.
Ebokk seems to come alive, throwing Maldorn's bow and snake unceremoniously into the rowboat. He steps forward (F9), donning his shield. "I'll protect you, young lady," he says to Anafrey.
"Now, we search." Maldorn says to his companions.
Maldorn scours the beach for any signs of humanoids: footprints, matted tall grass, dead/hunted animals, tools, garbage... etc.
-> Survival: 22
-> If being close to the wooded part of the island triggers my (Natural Explorer - Forest) class feature, then please add another +2 to that roll.

"Oi, Seldomites, we might be in some trouble here!" Maldorn yells trying to turn everyone's attention to the two approaching crabs.
Maldorn prepares an arrow to shoot at the closest crab if/when he realizes that running away is no longer an option.
(OOC: How far away are the crabs from Maldorn?)
OOC: One crab is 60 feet away. The other is 100 feet away.
At Maldorn's warning, Ebokk looks around. "Oh, my," he says, spotting the approaching crustaceans of unusual size.
Erric starts running back toward Maldorn, offering a hand to Jambiya, as soon as he cries out, ready for some crabs jokes to use on the old man..,
Maldorn releases his prepared arrow, at a minimum, to try and delay the closest crab.
-> Longbow vs Giant Crab: Attack: 20 Damage: 8 piercing.
He is not unwrapping his un-gloved finger for this fight, at least not yet. Maldorn also begins walking backward, towards the boat.
OOC: Oh no..... Fumble die: 7
3-5. String Break. Your bowstring snaps. Assuming you have a spare string, it requires 1 minute to replace it.

Round 1: Jambiya, Ebokk, Erric, crabs, Maldorn, Anafrey
Hearing Maldorn shout, Jambiya turns toward the beach and immediately sees a giant crustacean flying across the sand toward her friends. "Hey!" she shouts, tapping into her ability to communicate with animals. "Hey, over here!" she waves one arm. "What's wrong? What have we done? We don't mean any harm!" Sorry for the awful, super-primitive map.

He draws his bow (assume I should wait for attack rolls till it's my turn - it's been a while!)...
Maldorn uses both his action and bonus action to attack:
-> Dagger vs. Purple: Attack: 12 Damage: 6 piercing.
-> Dagger vs. Purple: Attack: 25 Damage: 9 piercing.
OOC: Was that... a Maldorn crit? I cannot believe what I am seeing.
Rolling for Jambiya: Eldritch Blast attack: 20, damage: 6 force damage
"Hey, over here!" she waves one arm. "What's wrong? What have we done? We don't mean any harm!" The fingers of the arm not waving start to crackle with energy. Round 2: Jambiya, Ebokk, Erric, crabs (Black and Purple damaged), Maldorn, Anafrey
Jambiya, you're up! The map is correct.
Erric, you're up!
