Maldorn welcomes all the well-wishes and worried queries from his hunting party, and even chuckles at Erric's jab at his hair and stony stares. A few moments later, with the new page on hand, Maldorn calls the groups' attention and mentions: "This here seems to be some of the earlier pages, perhaps even before the gentlemen met with good ol'Dirk and purchased the mirror. Jambiya, here, add this page to your ordered collection."
Seeing Anafrey lifting and carrying the bird-statue, Maldorn makes a proposal: "Perhaps you do not need to carry it, Nightshiver. I have a hunting trap we could place just so, and then position the statue's raised leg atop it in such a way that once our bird friend returns to being feather and bone, it will have no choice but to immediately step into the armed trap. I mean, the creature is already in a running stance as is, right? I've been caught in one to these traps in my youth and you can take my word when I say this bird-man won't be going anywhere."
(@DDP: Could the trap be set up in a way that its teeth are resting on the stone leg of the kenku? The idea being that once it is no longer petrified, the resistance against the trap will no longer be there and the mouth of the trap will immediately close on the creature's leg. Mechanically, I am aiming for a setup that doesn't even give it a chance at a DEX saving throw as described in the item's text. What do you think?)
Jambiya will help Erric look for any signs of the cockatrice's nest or any other dangers (she has a fantasy about raising pet cockatrices!). "It seemed very angry, I wonder if they're a wild creature, or something else. I guess there's a lot we don't know about in the world."
She will then look through the cabinets in the kitchen for anything useful, while the others set the Kenku's trap. If she finds any liquor, she'll quietly stash it for an emergency. If it all comes to naught, she will follow Anafrey when she goes to explore the last room on the floor.

Erric, please roll for an investigation check at advantage because of Jambiya's help. Actually, let's do it the other way around. Jambiya, roll for investigation with advantage, please.
Anafrey, the statue weighs about 450 pounds (again, magic), so while you are strong, you probably can't gently lift the statue.
Maldorn, for creativity and ingenuity sake, I'll say you can set up the trap just as you desire.
Maldorn, for creativity and ingenuity sake, I'll say you can set up the trap just as you desire.
Maldorn sets the trap as carefully as he can as Anafrey does her best to wedge the statue up just enough for the old ranger to place the trap successfully. Once his set up is complete, he will follow his companions into the next room.
Jambiya investigates, looking for signs of the cockatrice's origins and motivation, with Erric's Help: 19
As they work, she says, "I'm proud of how you rushed in to help when Maldorn got bit, Erric. That moment outside, when the arrow struck me... and then you healed me. I'm afraid it's made an impression on me. This isn't like Daddy Pop's stories."
As Erric is helping Jambiya search through the kitchen, he visibly tries to play it cool when she compliments him. "Th-thank you Jambiya. Very kind of you to say. Rushing in without thinking is one of my biggest flaws, but in this case I got lucky again and no one's a statue. And as for healing, you don't ever have to thank me for that. Would do it again in a heartbeat. As... long as that heartbeat happened after I slept because I'm tapped out. I have plenty other tricks up my sleeve, if we can survive long enough to let me use them tomorrow."
OOC: Can Erric take a minute to look at the singed rapier to see if he can figure out why it seems better than his current one?
Jambiya and Erric look carefully through the kitchen, but they don't find anything of value or any reason why the cockatrice might have been roosting permanently or temporarily in the house.
Erric uses his sleeve to rub away more of the soot from the rapier. Proceeding with a hunch, he removes a silver piece from his purse and compares it to the rapier. It looks like this rapier is either made of or coated in silver.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
As usual, Maldorn waits for Erric and Jambiya to follow Anafrey first, making sure he gives one last good look at the kitchen before closing the distance between him and his companions (perception: 19).
Erric's already gotten lost and forgot there was a room they missed and he follows Anafrey, rapier out.
As they cross the hallway into the open door into the last room he pauses for a brief second, motions for quiet, and gives his companions a bemused and reluctant "I may regret this" look, and casts minor illusion on the point just beyond the closed door (W10).
He manifests a few discrete sounds. First, a door opening (the sound of one of the doors they've wrestled with in the other rooms slowly being pushed open). Then, the sound of Erric's voice saying, "...must be in here...."
He does this as Anafrey nears the door frame of the door in front of them, and is trying to listen and watch for any sign of anything. He's used to working alone and hopes this improvisation isn't too terrible a decision.
(OOC: we've seen stairs to what was the upper floor in the entryway, but have we seen any sign of access to a basement?)
Jambiya will follow Anafrey and Erric, third in line, letting Maldorn take his customary spot at the back. She watches curiously as Erric does his thing, unsure what he is trying to accomplish. She whispers to him, "That was very convincingly done."

After Erric gives an indication that it's safe to proceed, Anafrey looks into the open door. She immediately realizes that the two doors are for two different rooms. The one she is looking in is about half as big as she had expected. This chamber appears to have been a study. A battered writing desk still stands amid the wreckage of a collapsed ceiling, though the accompanying chair fared less well. A large wooden beam bisects the room, with one end planted firmly against the base of the wall to Anafrey's right, while the other rests atop the wall to her left.
Anafrey carefully searches the room for any more journal pages or anything else of not, holding her hand out to signal for the others to stand back for now.
Despite Anafrey's physical command to stay put, Jambiya can't help but stick her head into the room and look around. Her eyes follow the beam upward. Though she can't be sure from down here, it looks like that corner of the second story might have withstood the fire.
If you're interested in climbing up, roll two D20s, please.
Erric briefly has an embarrassed and abashed look on his face when he realizes the rooms aren't connected, replaced quickly by a neutral expression. "I... meant to do that. Now if there's something in there awaiting us, it's thoroughly confused."
He suggests looking at the final room before looking upstairs. "No sense leaving someone or something behind us."
If no one wants to look in the final room, he'll suggest trying a similar illusion, with the sound of someone climbing up the beam and jumping onto the floorboards on the second floor.
Looking through the room, including searching the desk, Anafrey finds ink wells of various colors, various pen types, a couple thin brushes, a candle ... basically all the pieces of a calligrapher's tool set. She also finds in the desk's single drawer a book entitled Aatush the Cruel. Flipping through the book quickly, she sees it is written in Common and contains no illustrations.

Maldorn shivers at the mention of Dirk's stories, which always seem to end in death: "Let's keep those stories out of our minds..."

Which doors are you all using?
Anafrey will proceed south and enter through the already open door.

Jambiya looks up. Does the collapsed ceiling lead to the roof, or to a room above? And could one clamber up the beam to get there?
