Thanks for the submission. When I read the name, I kind of half expected Orlys to be a tortle, tbh. A LN Bugbear works well though, especially with the pirate background, though I don't normally allow homebrew PC inclusions. Pirate does make more sense in this case, though I wouldn't allow the No Honour advantage on wisdom (insight) checks. I'd be more inclined to add 1 gambling proficiency instead, e.g. playing card or dice set.
I'm going to close the recruitment thread tomorrow and will post the result here, but thanks for the submission regardless. Cheers!

Thanks for letting me apply, I love creating characters! I'm excited to have a shot at the game, though it looks like you got a lot of good submissions. fwiw, Bugbear isn't homebrew (I did make sure to turn off homebrew in the character builder, as I do have a fair bit), but you're right, it isn't the big three, either, it's out of Volo's Guide to Monsters. I'm open to any suggestions you have, given you know the nature of the game you want to run and the current players. It's a privilege to be a player in someone else's head/adventure!
Edit: I figured out why I was so confused! I've chosen the vanilla Pirate Background from PHB, which just gives a few skills and a general reputation, but nothing like Advantage on anything. (You might be thinking of this homebrew, but that's not the one I picked, though I know you can't see it on the character sheet until it's in a Campaign Page.)

All good, though I was referring to the Pirate Background. If you were to be successful, I might still allow it (we already have 3 sailor backgrounds), but with the specified change.
Bugbear is fine as a race (more than fine, in this case). Never had one as a PC in one of my games, and I like firsts in d&d. :D

A small shanty sits on the dock. Outside, a line of hopeful adventures stand.
”Next!”
The door to the shanty swings open. A dwarf exits armor clanging, he stops with tear filled eyes, “Best of luck to ye.”
“I said next!”
Topper enters the shanty, pulls the door shut and sits down.
The dock-master looks peers across the table. “What in the nine hells are you!”
From underneath the robe you hear “you forgot, bloody hell.”
Topper faces the dock master. “Me thinks ye posted a message fer a ships boy job.”
The dock-master appears upset. “I did. Before I take your application into consideration I’d like for you to tell me why my master should hire two such strange gnomes.”
Topper adjusts the mask on his face and utters a few words while waggling his fingers.
“Topper no gnome. Topper strong orc.”
The dock-master appears startled and suddenly put off, “My apologies orc Topper I cannot fathom how I thought you were two gnomes inside of a coat.”
”Hmm better. Human perception weak but we overlook. Now. We needs work. We’s strong orc. Can do tings. Tings with rope. Tie knots. Topper only orc from entire clan that can tinker tings. Topper smart orc. Momma say Topper smart like gnome.”

”Topper bring no clan war. We third generation slave. We escape. We need work to send many copper to momma. Momma buy freedom with many coopers.”
The dock-master stands and extends his hand to Topper. Topper grabs the dock-masters hand. “My master will be in touch.”

Backstory: Ferris had always looked at those big ships sailing in and out of his harbor City. He only imagined the heroics and adventures of every sailor on board. His fantasies far outweighed that of real life at sea. He found this out when he eventually made it on board and made a real go of the sailing life. Sure there was some excitement and daring do and he took to the life rather easily.
It was the hard things of the life at sea that made him in to who he is today. He is a bit hardened, but you would be too if you had seen some of the things that most don't get to. There are horrors beneath the waves and Ferris has faced more than he would ever say.
Luckily he still has his sanity and he still calls the sea his home. He is very reliable and quick to action as his Captain dictates.
What is the current party? I had the idea of going Artificer artillerist but looks like there might be two artificer's already? If open to another artificer I would like to help with cannons and blasting ships apart.
Preferred Position: Ship's Surgeon or general deckhand
Stats: Standard array
Background: Growing up in the shadow of Hill Giant clans who worshipped the Dodkong, Silas Tallowtail, a young Halfling healer was fascinated by the Giants and studied them and the lore surrounding the Dodkong. The Dodking's escape from death, and ability to unnaturally extend his lifespan particularly interested the Halfling, who sought to discover and adapt some of these secrets. Unfortunately, this merely drew the attention of Grugaran, who was amused by the little halfling's quest and the opportunity it offered to spread his influence outside the dull-witted Hill Giants. He offered Silas a taste of his power, which the curious hafling eagerly accepted. After mere minutes, feeling the connection to the Dodkong and determined to resist it, he fled, heading as far away as he possibly could, only settling once he found a remote lighthouse in Faerun's Northern tundras that needed a keeper.
Hiding there for sometime, Silas began to crave companionship once more and hoped that his time in isolation could help him manage his connection to the Dodkong. Moreover, by finding others, he hoped to find some way of severing this unwanted bond.
Name: V'rekh Race: Tortle Background: Outlander Class: Sorcerer (Storm Sorcery) Backstory: V'rekh used to live on his own near the water pond. He was most happy when the wind was blowing and the rain falling on his shell. Lately he has started feeling the magic rise inside him and the urge to see the world. One day when the storm was raging and the full moon was barely visible between the clouds he decided to gather his posessions and started walking looking for adventure. Alignment: neutral good Preferred crew position: deckhand, as V'rekh does not have any experience sailing a ship. Ability scores: 13151211911
No character link yet, as I don't own the Tortle race, but I'm willing to buy it for this game.
Hey all. Thanks for your interest and PC ideas. I've updated the current party list in post 47 of this recruitment thread.
*Notes: We have 5 continuing players, so I'm now only looking for 2 new players. Once successful PCs are chosen, the DM and those players will work out how best to introduce and intergrate their characters into the unfolding story. Therefore it may take a while for the actual introduction to the game to happen.
All official content is available for selection (DM enabled) once PCs join the game, so that can be taken into account with PC building and some changes would be allowed.
I'll leave the recruitment thread open for another 24 hours or so, then close it, contact the successful applicants via PM and post a closing message here. Cheers all - Vassa Sunstar.
