The tavern was loud, smoky and full, but you noticed the Gnome as he entered. Not so much by his presence, but by the two hulking humans in mismatched armor, weapons and scars which followed him into the Tavern. The Gnome was a Forest Gnome guessing by the thick shock of blonde hair sticking up in all directions, and the long, neatly combed beard twinned with vines, mistletoe and holly. In one hand he held an metal object, tapered at one end to a point, and which gave off different colors as he made his way slowly through the bar pointing it this way and that through the crowd. As he comes near you and points the device, he looks up as the device gives off a greenish glow, briefly meeting your eyes before moving on.
Sometime later in the night, one of the mercenaries comes up to and says, "Boss wants to offer you a job."
As the party is being assembled then: "Please, sit," says the Gnome, "Let us wait for the others before I begin. I do so hate to repeat myself."
Once everyone is gathered: "My name is Klatu Barato of the Nicto Clan, and I currently represent a certain party in need of adventurers. I cannot tell you much about the job, not here and now. Too many ears and too little caution. However, I sense you are eager to begin a career in adventuring and this job may entail a certain amount of risk. If you will accompany me to the village of Darkshelf, just downriver".
"Greetings Klatu!. Your proposal sounds interesting. I would be willing to accompany you to Darkshelf to discuss the specifics of the job if my companions agree".
Not sure if a check is warranted here based on Flemig's Investigation skill, but if so I'd like to use it to try to determine if Klatu seems like a truthful fellow.
Also, do we have any previous knowledge of the Darkshelf village?

Yes, those would be Perception & History checks respectively. Each party member is welcome to roll :)

"Of course I'm eager! Who doesn't love a good mystery wrapped in an adventure! Let's go lets go lets go!!" Flemig says, literally bouncing in his seat. He then seems to draw in a deep breath and then says "But of course, I will defer to the wishes of the group as well" while ducking his head a bit.

When Barato arrived Zansnut sat at a table nearby the table they were set to meet at in order to finish his rigged game. After relieving a fellow patron of his hard earned coin he joined the rest of the party at the table sitting across the table from Barato. He was on edge, unsure if the man was sent by the one he was avoiding. "Surely someone as dedicated as you would tell us the name of your boss at least."
Rolls:
21 Persuasion check: He is trying to persuade Barato to give a little more information here.
Klatu holds up the device you saw him with earlier. "The device is a scrying device and it helps inform me of who is a likely candidate for whatever job I am recruiting for at the time. It's not foolproof, it doesn't make you do anything, only that you are more likely to be inquisitive, discreet and looking for adventure in this circumstance."
Zansnut
"The very knowledge of what the job is, is a secret of my current employer, should you decide not to take it then you cannot reveal what you don’t know."
Darkshelf
Darkshelf is a village several leagues downstream from Baldur's Gate on the coast. The village is known for the local granite quarry, much prized by the upper class in Baldur's Gate.
Insight
As far as what he is willing to tell, Nicto is being truthful.
Unlike Flemig, Zansnut wasn't as eager to go on a quest that he knew nothing about. However he very well couldn't stay in the area much longer. "Very Well I guess I'm in." He looked at the device on the table. "How attached are you to that device. I'll play you for it," he inquired as he pulled out his weighted dice, "one quick game before we hit the road." He was already making plans on how he could relieve Barato of it on their next meeting should he say no.

Erevan nods to Zansnut as the halfling joins the table, before returning his gaze to the gnome in front of him.
"Okay... Klatu, was it? I think I speak for the others when I say you at least have our attention, but what is in this for us? You've got to give us something to work with here, surely?"
Allistar finally finishes his bowl of stew that hasn’t been cupped by both hands. Complete enthralled by the new cuisine. He looks over to the forest gnome. “It seems to appear you already posess capable men, this must mean danger, yes? I am not familiar with this Darkshelf, much like many things around here. But, you have the face that reminds me of Viktor, another gnome man I know, I trust him, I will trust you too. Do you know this Viktor that I know?” He stretches out with both hands to shake Klatu’s hand.
Klatu laughs, "I think not. Such a thing would not work for one it is not made for. It would be no more than a weight for you, and it would call out for its rightful owner."
Erevan
"That is why I ask you to accompany me to my employer, and he can give you more details. My job is the finding. His is the explaining and the rewarding. Division of labor, as it were. And again, a busy tavern is not the best place to conduct your business. The walls, and the patrons have ears."
Erevan grins at the interaction between Allistar and Klatu, and relaxes slightly when he sees those sat around him seemingly trust the gnome. "I can appreciate that, if you let something slip now it'll be common knowledge on the other side of the town by the time we've even left the tavern. Very well, I will come along, if nothing else but just to see what all this mystery was for!" He smiles and reaches over to shake Klatu's hand.
"Gort and Gnut? Ahh, they are my bodyguards. Sometimes I need to go into the less respectable areas of the city to find what I am looking for at the moment. And they are very capable of discouraging physical, shall we say, over familiarity. Unfortunately, I do not know this Viktor. Do you perchance remember his clan? I may be familiar with it, but like as not."
"More generally, I can tell you about on the way. We need something to wile away the hours."
Flemig places a hand over his mouth while bouncing slightly in his chair, trying hard to contain his excitement. Something sounding like "lets go lets go lets go" can be heard through his covering hand.
Maya was sitting back in her seat, quietly in the shadows with her arms crossed, observing the others at the table. As Klato holds up the device in his hand, delivering his explanation, Maya uncrosses her arms to pull her hooded cloak down and leans forward into the light. She looks Klatu over, then scans the rest of the adventurers as Zansnut tries to haggle and Erevan inquires. Her eyes land on Allistar and his meal, jealous she didn’t think about grabbing a bowl of stew for herself. As the mood at the table begins to relax and Flemig vibrates in excitement, Maya takes a breath and just reaches a hand out to Klatu, “You’ve got my attention. I’ll follow.”
Zansnut could see a couple of the people he cheated start heading in his direction. "Tanirall has the right idea," he thought. Standing up from the table he slipped out the door. Zansnut stood outside waiting for the rest of the group.
Flemig bounds out of his chair and sets off after Tanirall, clapping excitedly. "Finally!" Trailing closely after Tanirall he says "I've always wanted to meet a Half-Orc. Do those tusks hurt? They look painful. That's a big battleaxe you have! Have you ever killed anyone with it? What is that amulet you're wearing? Is it magic? Can I see it?"
To Kasian: I've assumed that I don't know and have never met Klatu, despite the fact we are both Forest Gnomes. I guess I'll ask now to clarify whether that is actually the case.

To Fleming: “You seem eager little one.”
To Nicto: “But why choose us?” Tanirall glances around the table of random adventurers cautiously.
