In the busy city of Neverwinter, two adventurers come together for a seemingly simple and low-paying job. What happens next is up to you. Will you meet more adventurers along the way? Will you get learn to become a force to be reckoned with?
This is my first time as a DM, and I’m looking forward to telling this story together with a group of players. II want to prioritize people who haven’t yet managed to find a place in another game, and people who are relatively new to DnDBeyond.
It’s important that players can usually post once a day, sometimes two, so make sure your schedule allows for that. Of course, it’s fine if you take breaks from time to time – real life is more important - but please do tell me in advance if you can. For my part, I will do my best to make the story move along as fast as possible.
Joining the game is a bit of a commitment to your fellow players. Play-By-Post games can take a long time and sometimes feel like they’re moving forward very slowly. My guess is that the Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure will take at least 2 months to finish.
This game will be a mix of exploring new areas, fighting monsters according to the D&D combat rules, and role-playing. Role-playing often means developing fun interactions and conversations between the players’ characters; they react to what happens to them and talk together as the adventure goes along. As this is a game aimed at beginners, you don’t need to be very confident yet at any of these things; I know I’m not. But all these skills, including role-playing, are things that anyone can learn with practice. I will do my best as DM to encourage players to role-play and provide situations where it works well.
If you’re not familiar with D&D or DnDBeyond, and would like my help in building a character that you’ll enjoy playing, that’s fine – please just PM me to let me know you're interested (click on my picture and then choose ‘Send Private Message’, and we can chat about it through PMs.
Backstory/biography:
The backstory or bio should be fairly short, only one or two paragraphs, explaining where your character is from, how they became skilled in the fighting or magical skills they have, and why they have become adventurers. As the story starts in the city of Neverwinter, it would be good to talk about what you’re doing there or how you came to be there. All characters start at level one; no evil alignments please.
Beginning the Game
We will start the game as soon as everyone has introduced themselves. Please wait for me to post before threading off of a specific part. I would also like to add, I will be honest with my roles. You should too. I wont have you send pics but please keep in mind your only shorting yourself of a great adventure if you lie.
About me: I got into D&D 3 weeks ago and have already been DM'ing this game at my house. I’ve played in a couple of great Adventure League games. I am a Level 5 soon to be level 6 Cleric but I love DMing.
Flyn knew from an early age that he had magical powers but couldn't seem to control it with his own free will. His mother would never tell him anything and would always blame natural phenomenon on the weird goings-on in the house. When everyone thought that Flyn wasn't listening, other clan members would always comment that he was just like his father. Flyn had never known his father due to the fact he left the clan before Flyn's first birthday. Due to being different, he didn't have many friends and tended to spend a lot of time alone, reading books and exploring the local wilderness. Once he was old enough he left the clan to better hone his powers and see what the world had to offer.
On his way to Neverwinter, in hopes to find a magic user to help nurture his innate abilities and teach him to unlock his potential, Flyn gets caught in a violent storm. After a narrow miss from a bolt of lightning, he is knocked unconscious to awake in the morning with a tingling feeling throughout his body and a feeling that a vacuum within himself had been filled. On arriving at Neverwinter it was not hard to find someone of note who, as soon as Flyn knocked on the door, pulled him into his home and began to examine the Halfling.
This was the start of his apprenticeship and now two years on he is a budding Storm Sorcerer sitting in an Inn eating his evening meal in peace thinking about the world outside the city walls. It was time to travel again. Start his own adventure then, when he was more powerful, return to his clan to show the person he had become.
As dusk approaches you find yourself in the Inn at Neverwinter. It is here in which you here a surly dwarf talking loudly and boisterously about something adventurers he seeks and how he will pay handsomely for a task in which he needs help with.
Sildar: Aye! I was told heroes would come and show me what they are made of in order to gain me gold. I have been waiting for Gundren Rockseeker to give me the go ahead since yesterday and I gained word that he has been waiting for me down the road. I wonder what he could be up to?
(Please reply to this thread to keep up with the parts of the story)
The young looking halfling turns in his chair towards the voice. To himself, he thinks What a coincidence I was just getting bored of this place, before leaping down off his chair and heading in the direction of the Dwarf. Not wanting to look too eager and also to gauge the interest of the room, Flyn scoots around a few of the tables and checks to see who else is taking notice of the outburst and if they are also getting up.
Perception7
Once in the vicinity of Sindren, Flyn waits for a break in the conversation before making his introduction. "You seem to be short of heroes and I am ready to leave this place. I am not what you would call a hero per se. But depending on the task I may be able to give a hand. The name is Flyn Copperkettle and I seem to be blessed with the gift of the arcane. What is the job and how handsomely paid are we looking at."
Me- This dwarf is not really showing all his cards yet, you can't detect his body language but you sense he is a dwarf of many secrets
His grizzled face bears a knowing smile, the the club in his hand speaks volumes
Sildar: I had it too...many-too many, moons ago. But enough of that, Gundren has asked me to size you up, to make sure he isn't throwing away his money or your life. I am sure you have a skill or two you are hoping to put to the test. Well let's see if your skills can stand up to a bit of snagging.
Flyn looks around the room concerned by the reply that had been given by Sildar. "OK, look. I haven't excepted the job yet. I don't even know if I am suitable for the task. What in the 9 Hells is snagging?"
Before Flyn can say anything more or even walk away, his skills or lack of will be tested if he is ready or not.
As Sildar swings his club, Flyn ducks. "Hold on a sec. Are you trying to kill me." Not wanting to kill this Dwalf in the presence of so many in the Inn the halfling tries to get some distance between himself and the madman in front of him. Quickly moving both his hands in front of himself and whispering the spell activation in halfling a Gust to try and push Sildar away from him. (Sildar will have to do a Strength check (DC13) or be pushed back 5 feet. If he is pushed Flyn will run 25 ft away from him in the opposite direction.)
"I am not sure who you think I am or what this is going to prove but maybe I will just stay put in my masters quarters."
Sildar rolled a an 8. He is pushed back 5 feet. In which Flyn runs 25 ft away from him in the opposite direction. Since Sildar is pushed 5 ft back and Flyn is 25 ft away, Sildar is a total of 30 ft from Flyn.
Sildar: Not so fast young sir!
And with that Sildar Choose Red Knight's Gambit. Sildar weaves unpredictably and swiftly, disorientating all foes he passes through. Sildar moves in a straight line towards Flyn and with a gust is behind Flyn now. You must make an Acrobatics (Dex) check against a (DC10) or be knocked prone.
Before Sildar calls a stop to the battle, Flyn had had enough and was just about to release a frost strike at the back of the charging dwarf. As icicles start to form around his outstretched palm the halfling drops his arm and bends over breathing hard from the exertion.
Once he gets some of his breath back he starts a rant of his own, "What was that? Do I look like a fighter? I am only new to this but I am sure if I was going to get into a fight with someone I would make sure there was a lot of distance between myself and the blunt end of their club."

Sildar brings his club up to swing and with a 13 will miss while aiming at your head.
Sildar: May the gods have mercy on your soul. (Swings and Misses) Blast this club, I have fought too many times with it. These hands should have hit.
Flyn your up
Keep in mind Sildar's AC is 10. Also you are not supposed to Kill Sildar.
((OOC: My AC is 13 so that is actually a hit))
No worries, since this is the first fight and for times sake we are gonna go with a miss. Your turn.
((OOC: All good))

Looking behind himself he watches the dwarf blur towards him. With a quick change of direction he manages to get away from the charge.
As Sildar passes by Flyn, sweat on his brow, he motions to stop.
Sildar: That’s enough, I think.
Sildar looks at you. Is he impressed? Disappointed? It is hard to tell but you can try.
