Volo lets off a small smile and replies "It's not you - it's that your the fifth group of people I've recommended to her, and all five have come asking the same thing. The first time was cute, the second time was persistant, but the fifth time, it makes me wonder what she does with the ones I've already given her - she's probably selling them or something, so if she's making a profit off of my works, then I should be too, it'll be five gold unless she comes herself to get one," he says gently.
Heading to the bar, Durnan pours out and ale and just says "4 copper"
"I mean, by my math, she did offer us a 5 gold per piece discount, so that's more savings for us. I guess it still makes sense for us to pay the five to save the 20?" Briga does some counting with her fingers in the air, and then shrugs. "We're trying to get some fancy outfits going, and Merryweather is our tailor. We got invited to the opera. First timer here, at the opera. I've been to some of the peasant plays, but this will be new to me. I won't even know when to cheer and when to boo or what kind of vegetables to bring to throw at the villain."
"We did not get invited to the opera.. Not really, " Arlon says, " We got invited to talk to Mirt at the opera to talk to Mirt. Seems someone has been talking about us. In a good way."
"Well," Volo begins "People talking about you, not necessarily a bad thing - people talk about me all the time," he says with a smile. "Though I must admit, I am not the only one who has been spreading word of your work - in fact - you saved the son of the previous Open Lord of Waterdeep. Renear still has many ties in the city that are nothing to do with his father, and he has friends in very high places," he smiled. "And you mentioned you were meeting with Mirt? He might be a Money Lender, but he was adventurer once. Him, Durnan and I went down into Undermountain..." Volo begins recounting stories of the times he spent traveling with them as a bard - though Volo seems to come out the hero more than you would expect in his stories.
"Undermountain, wow, that is crazy," Briga says. "I get why he'd rather be a money-lender than go back down there. We encountered some of the things that crawl out of the hole here, I'd imagine worse things are down below. I mean, I'm sure we can handle it, but it's still pretty intense sounding. So, Mirt traveled with Durnan, the bartender here who was swinging that sword the other day, and you were in their party? Big town, small world, I guess. Mirt becomes a money lender, Durnan a tavern owner, and you an author. Maybe we should work on our 'retirement jobs' for when we get fed up with adventuring. But that's a long ways away, for me!"
"That be explaining a lot," says Tyrus, looking at the deep well that dominates the taproom. "And I bet Durnan here could be telling a tale or two as well, based on what he's seen and heard while working next to that thing."
He then turns to Volo and says, "Maybe you two should get together and write a book. 'Tales of the Yawning Portal', ye could call it." [OOC: If they take the idea up, I want part of the royalties. ;-) ]
[OOC: Do we have a specific date for this campaign? No biggie if we don't, I was just wondering what age some of the characters might be based on the official timeline.]

Tyrus Mountson: Lvl 3 Dwarvish Bard; Waterdeep Campaign (Dragon Heist) Nanoc the Younger: Semi-retired Lvl 2 Rogue / Level 2 Barbarian Human; The Knuckle, Mror Holds, Ebberon. The Honourable Jaden Fellan: Level 3 Human Eldritch Knight; Band of Sunswall
AKA: Phillip Berrie: writer, editor and academic thrillseeker—a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
Volo chuckles at Tyrus' idea before saying "he doesn't want to, I asked him three years ago, says it would ruin the surprise that his business is part of. Durnan has always been a 'if you want to know whats down there, take a look for yourself and if your lucky to come up, you'll see that nobody would believe you anyway.' I disagree, but hey, I respect the wishes of my friends," he says with a smile. "And Durnan doesn't speak much, the amount of words he has said in the last ten years wouldn't even fill a page," he jokes as Durnan gives a cold look over in your table's direction. Volo waves politely back.
[OOC: So, right now it is the summer of 1492 DR, The Year of Three Ships Sailing - and it's about two tendays before Founders Day, which is when the party at the Cassalanters is being held. Founders Day happens on Flamerule 1]

[OOC: So, it looks like I won't be calling Durnan laddie then. According to the Forgotten Realms Fandom Wiki, Durnan was born in 1283 DR. This makes him over 200 years old... He's looking great for his age ;-) ]

[OOC: Yep, Durnan looks like his in his mid-fourties, and he is over 200 years old - and a human, his trip to undermountain has stopped him from aging ;)]
"Well, my guess is to offer help on the financial side for your new business, he's rich because of his investments. He might want to meet you to see if your worth his help," Volo responds. "Or maybe it's what you said and he wishes to get to know the people who saved the previous Open Lord's son. He is a funny one, Mirt," Volo says.
OOC: I will be away for about a full week, as a heads up. I'll try to post if I get an opportunity, otherwise, Briga will go along with the group and contribute as needed, feel free to roll for her, GM.
"Well, he is a portly man, with a large moustache. Wears very fine clothes, and well - when you see him in a room, you can't miss him. There's just... something about him, he seems to have more respect than other money lenders in town, that's all," Volo says while stroking his own moustache.
"Thank you," Tyrus says and then goes on to ask another question, "When the two of you went adventuring, what role did he play in the party? Was he a guard or a fighter like Durnan, or did he finance your group?"
"Five gold dragons just to write his name," whispers Tyrus in awe to himself. "Maybe I should try me hand at this writing game."
He will then seek out Durnan and buy himself a beer, while keeping an ear on the conversation that is going on.
[OOC: DM, What does the drink cost?]

Tyrus has paid for the drinks and now see Ms Merryweather in completely different light.
