Jinhazar looks over his notes and mentally speaks with Roselina, "Hey, your grace, or your majesty or whatever, know any songs that are upbeat. These Vistani love a good song and a merry drink." He turns one of his note books and shows her some notes he's written about the Vistani, though it written in another language.
Hansen walked a few paces behind and to the right of Roselina and as the day grew darker outside the city walls, he cast Light on his shield in order to give himself and others that couldn't quite see in the dark some form of vision. As they approach the camp, he notices a man heading towards them and speaking as if he knows who they are, as if he's expecting them.
As the old man speaks, Hansen's eyes go narrow and he focuses his intent on the man trying to discern what he was up to.
This figure, whoever he was - seemed to be the man in charge around here. Everybody seems to be looking to him about what to do and as he speaks to you, you realize the tension subside within the group a little. There doesn't seem to be deceit to his words, though you do detect a tone of concern in his voice, however, and a look of hope you notice in his eyes that seems genuine.
As the group approaches the camp and see the older fellow start out to meet them, Jodrith wastes not time as he moves up to become parallel with the man. Turning to then face the side of the man in an effort to avert his gaze away the camp fire for he was told to distrust it. Not attempting to be an intimidating presence at the moment he will make sure to keep at least 5-10 ft. of distance between him and the older man as to not crowd his space.
Jodrith hearing the man tell the party that he was foretold about their arrival, stands silent, listening intently, ready for whatever is to come next.
"He seems genuine," he whispers to Roselina, "I sense no ill will coming from him but I advise caution nonetheless," he then fell silent and watched as Vrakvroth rode up on his horse, lance in hand and everything, which would add an intimidating factor. Not everyday you see a black dragonborn ahorse with a weapon in hand, and he hoped with that sight alone it would serve to curtail any bright ideas these people would have.
Vrakvroth followed behind the others as they made their way to the camp, his black horse at an easy walk. As they approach the camp he stops he reins in to the back and to the left of his companions. He looks around the camp from his raised position marking the location of people and looking for weapons.
Roselina could see the campsite as they were walking towards it, noticing that Hansen had cast Light and she was able to see more clearly in the darkness. “Thank you for the light.” She had said back to him before continuing on and seeing an older man approach them as well. Then she heard Jinhazar’s voice in her head again, annoyed as she then looked over at his notebook, only to see that it was all in a language that she didn’t know and now glaring. “It’s Lady Roselina Pridebloom to you. Of course I know of songs and music suitable for merrymaking. Those notes would be so helpful, if they were written in Common so that I can actually read and understand them.” She mentally said back to Jinhazar, getting really annoyed with how useless he is so far. Then she listened to the older man talk as if they knew who they are and having expected them to come before saying that he knows what they will ask and already having an answer for it. Soon she heard Hansen tell her that he thinks the man is genuine and not sensing ill intent but to be cautious still. Roselina nodded in thanks to him, glad for his guidance and help in all this unlike a certain someone here. “Is that so? It is obvious why we are here after all, considering what we’ve heard about you lately. Why are you here and refusing to leave, bothering civilians and using charms on guards? Naturally for both of our sakes, I would like to talk this out peacefully first and come to an agreement that benefits both of us.” She then said back to the old man with a neutral expression and taking charge, going into this like she was handling negotiations with another dignitary. Hopefully with Jodrith and Vrakvroth by her side and on his horse, that will keep these Vistani from thinking that they can try any sketchy spells on them.
The man gives a warm smile and nods "In fact, the two are related. We've been waiting for you. My name is Stanimir," he says, and then gestures to two of the other travellers who join him either side. A woman and a man. "Let me introduce my children, Damia and Ratka. Now you don't need to worry, We have no desire to make enemies with Lady Morwen. I have a story to share with you. First, you listen, then we go. That is my only request, what you do next is your decision, but destiny will lead you to us either way," he says, "So, will you let us share a story?"
Hansen blinked. The demand was a strange one to be sure, one he wasn't expecting. A simple story and they would be gone? There had to be more to this than what was on the surface, but he kept his peace. His eyes scanning around to make sure there was nothing going on while his hand rested on the pommel of his mace. From earlier, they seemed genuine, so he had nothing to fear from them, and considering Roselina was a noble - and one that could fight at that - he was sure she could handle whatever they decided to throw at her.
"You caused all this trouble to tell us a story?" He asked with a frown, "you could have simply sought us out? Why go to this trouble?"
Vrakvroth shifts again in his saddle. Just a subtle motion that draws the eye to movement to remind these strangers that he was still here.
He reaches out with his divine senses to detect good and evil.
Divine Sense
As an action, you can detect good and evil. Until the end of your next turn, you can sense anything affected by the hallow spell or know the location of any celestial, fiend, undead within 60 ft. that is not behind total cover. You can use this feature 4 times per long rest.
Taken back a moment by this rather odd request, what could be so important that these people simply want to tell us a story? These people have not acted in an open hostile way at the moment so Jodrith saw no reason to start something where there was nothing. With Roselina and Hansen heading the interaction Jodrith felt comfortable in his part as Sentinel, simply standing near keeping a close eye on the surroundings of his current companions as to not allow anyone who would do them harm to make the first move.
"That's not our way," replies Stanimir, "we've always been dramatic," he says, walking toward the fire, "we only use illusion magic," he says calmly smiling. He takes a seat at the fireplace, and fills his mouth full of wine, which he then spits into the fire. The flames of the fire change from a reddish-orange to a vibrant green. As the flames dance and sway with the evening sky in the background, a dark shape seems to form in the bonfire's core.
"We come from an ancient land whose name is long forgotten - a land of kings. Our enemies forced us from our homes, and now we wander the lost roads."
The dark shape in the fire takes the form of a man being knocked from his horse, a spear piercing his side.
Stanimir continues. "One night, a wounded soldier staggered into our camp and collapsed. We nursed his terrible injury and quenched his thirst with wine. He survived. When we asked him who he was, he wouldn't say. All he wanted was to return home, but we were deep in the land of his enemies. We took him as one of our own and followed him back toward his homeland. His enemies hunted him. They said he was a prince, yet we didn't give him up, even when their assassins fell upon us like wolves."
Deep within the bonfire, you see that dark figure transforms into a vague shape with a sword drawn, fighting off a host of shadowy shapes.
"This man of royal blood fought to protect us, as we protected him. We bore him safely to his home, and he thanked us. He said, "I owe you my life. Stay as long as you wish, leave when you choose, and know that you will always be safe here."
The figure in the dancing fire vanquishes its final foe then disperses in a cloud of smoke and embers.
Stanimir's face changes to a more sombre expression. "A curse has befallen our noble prince, turning him from the kind man he was into a tyrant. We alone have the power to leave his domain. We've travelled far and wide to find heroes such as yourselves to end our dread lord's curse and put his troubled soul to rest.
That is my story, and now is a choice. Either way, destiny will get you to where you are supposed to go. So I have one request for the group of you. Our leader, Madam Eva, knows more information. She knows all. Will you return to Barovia with us and speak with her?"
Hansen followed the old man and his children back to the camp, a frown still on his face, not entirely convinced by the explanation the old man gave. Still, he followed and sat down by the fire, dispelling the Light as he no longer had any use for it.
His attention turned to the old man and to the images of the fire once he started explaining their past. Once it was over, Hansen leaned back and ran a hand through his hair. He looked over at Stanimir, his lips thinned, then back down on the floor at a loss for words, trying to recall any information he had on this mentioned Barovia.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Roselina heard as the old man told them that the two are related, having been waiting for them and introducing himself. Then two other travelers came up, Stanimir introducing them as his children before talking about how they don't want to make enemies of Duchess Morwen and having a story to share with them. They have to listen, then the Vistani will go as that is his only request and that whatever decision they make is theirs, asking to share the story. Seriously, they will leave as long as they get to tell this story of theirs? "Really, that is all? Fine, we will listen. But if you try anything funny or suspicious, we'll have to use force." Roselina said back to him as she then heard Hansen question why they went to all this trouble when they could have just sought them out. She listened as Stanimir said that it isn't their way, always dramatic and using illusion magic which explains the hexes and charms. He started walking to the fireplace, slowly following behind him and the children while motioning for everyone else to come along. Roselina was shocked as Stanimir spat wine into the fire, seeing it change color and something forming in the core of it. He talked about how they came from an ancient land of kings, forced from their homes and wandering the lost roads before the shape changed into that of a man being knocked from his horse, a spear piercing his side. He explained that a wounded soldier collapsed in their camp and they nursed his injuries as he survived. The soldier wanted to return home so they took him in and went with him to his homeland. Enemies came after him as he was a prince but the Vistani wouldn't give him up even with assassins attacking them. A Prince? Now Roselina was more interested as the figure in the fire changed to a shape with a sword fighting off other shadows. Stanimir said that the man of royal blood fought to protect them since they protected him before returning him to his home safely, the man owing them his life and telling them that they can stay as long as they like, leave when they choose, and will always be safe there. But now the figure had dispersed away and Stanimir is more somber, wondering what had happened. She listened to him say that a curse has befallen their prince, turning him from kind into a tyrant and how they alone have the power to leave his domain. They have traveled far to find heroes like them to end their dread lord's curse and put his trouble soul to rest, requesting that they go with them to Barovia to speak with Madam Eva who knows more information. She felt so terrible for the prince, being hunted down and finally able to be home safe and sound only to end up cursed. How could she not want to help a fellow noble finally rest in peace? "That is very tragic, a noble and kind prince like him being cursed. While I would very much like to help, it is not my decision alone since we had only came to have you leave to help out the Duchess Morwen after all." Roselina had then said back to Stanimir, looking over the others and wondering what they thought about this story and request. Now she was thinking of anything she could possibly know of Barovia and this cursed prince.
Trying to recall anything that has been mentioned of Barovia proved fruitless. Roseline had never heard of these lands before, and there wasn't really anything much written about it. You don't even recall seeing it anywhere on a map that you have looked at in the past.
Seeing that Hansen and Roselina have agreed to listen to this man's story, Jodrith reluctantly, to himself anyways, follows suit. Though not getting comfortable, Jodrith will remain standing not far behind Roselina as this man tells his story. Once completed for the first time in this interaction Jodrith decides to speak "I have never heard of this "Barovia" place you speak of but your tale is a tragic story. I came here to rid Daggerford of your people and in listening to your story, if your word is your bond, then it would appear that I will have completed that task. My work in Daggerford being completed, I have no objections in helping your people and going to this "Barovia", if my fellow acquaintances agree. Though, this once, I'll warn you. If are deceiving us, your illusionary magic will do little to protect you from me...".
Snapping out of th3 amazement of the light show, Jinhazar, matter-of-factly states in Jodrith's head, "youve never heard of it cause its most likely a demi plane and exsists out of time." As he says this he's lookind down at his note book. He then stares at Roselina with a confused look on his face, then shrugs and looks back at his book.
In Jordith's head, "Is she always this rude when someone is trying to help her. I mean, she's a bard and a noble, i think. She should at least know more than common. Anyway so yeah i guess I'll keep being useless to her. So we are really going to Barovia? That is what it's called right? Also, why does everyone get to ride a horse and i have to run behind you folks? You know what, nevermind. I should have brought one with me instead of riding in passing caravans on the way to Daggerford. At least i don't waste any breath talking out loud. Also i wouldnt threaten then idly, they are a lot more formidable than they seem. " He looks up at Jordith and smiles slightly.
"I have no qualms against going to help these people and their Prince," he says after a moment of quiet thought, his eyes somewhat distant. "What say you, friend dragonborn? Are you willing to come with us to this Barovia to help these people?"
Vrakvroth considers for a moment the request of the old man.
"So my question is this good man; If we come with you to this man's domain, will be able to leave once we have entered or will we be trapped as others are?"
