The way from Uptown to the Hill wasn’t very long, perfect for a stroll through Cypress Hill Park. She didn’t know why it was called that, since it wasn’t particularly hilly and didn’t have any cypresses on it. Might have to do with the war though, she thought. In the end, she went there for the beautiful duck pond and the food vendors selling candied apples and corn cobbs. It wasn’t long before she found what she had come looking for, and still in good time to make it over to the Council building. She could already see the cuppola of the main hall from here, it couldn’t be that far.

Arc looks over at Tarian, giving her a look over, "...How capable are you?" He wasn't exactly filled with confidence by the recommendations of a drug vendor, but you never know. He's also trying to look her in the eyes to judge if the words she speaks next are truth....and if she's currently high or not.
Brandt kept his rifle in goodcondition, and oiling it, aswell as prepping sixrounds of ammunition had something almost ritualistic to them. He had crafted this gun himself, he knew that it had its quirks and needed constant care. He took time on most days to make sure his gear was in shape, and it wasa great thing to occupy your mind with when waiting.
Luckily, he didn’t have to wait for too long, as the first people started to arrive. By the hundreds. Crap! It’d be difficult to keep any order here without anyone trying to cause trouble. If someone wanted to cause chaos, this was a nightmare! Brandt could see easily that by now people had already filled all the seats and that spectators would spill outside of the designated zones. He needed to bring order into this, to make sure that people wouldn’t sit too close to the podium, more wasn’t really an option any more.
————————
Milo was struck by the throng of people who were gathering for the presentation by this gnome everyone was talking about. He had been intrigued by the student yesterday, but he hadn’t expected this many people. And of course, they kept forgetting that not everyone could see what was going on at the back of the crowd. If he wanted to see anything, he’d have to somehow get a seat on the tribune, or push her way past the people who were already here, trying to get to the front of the crowd.
————————
Thia heard the crowd before she saw it. Thousands must have already gathered on the Union Square in front of the Council building, eagerly awaiting Sparks’ address. She was pushing her way through loose groups of people intent to get closer to the stage. From here, she could see a line of guards with truncheons held out at chest height, trying to push the crowd back, or to at least channel it into the designated zones around the podium. It didn’t take an imperial artificer to realise however that the space just wouldn’t be enough.

Grumbling to himself “Shit, this simply won’t do.” Weaving in and out of the crowd, making his way to the front/side area to get a view of the members already taking their seats on the tribune. Looking for the youngest looking person or oldest. Also taking a count of how many chairs there are if any.
Brandt looks noticeably frustrated as he walks up to the crowd. He fires a shot into the air. "Get back! There's not enough space up near the front. How about we get through this presentation without crushing someone to death, please?" He addresses the other guards as he reloads his rifle. "What the **** did they even hire you for!? Get these people away from the stage so that we don't get a ******* stampede today! And if any of you starts cracking skulls, my next shot goes between your eyes." With the way these idiots handle their business, I'm definitely going back to the tavern for drinks tonight.
The shot rings out, and the crowd loosens up, temporarily shocked by the sound, some terrified. The clear sound of the gunner giving orders had a strangely calming effect on the crowd though, and the shoving near the podium seized.
Milo, you managed to slip into the first two ranks, slightly to the right of the podium, and might still be able to push a little further.
Thia, you’re still mostly to the back of the crowd, and the panic from the gun shot is still in the air, with many people uncertsin as to what it means. In the shpving and running at the back, you hear a mother shouting, presumably since she’s lost her child in the crowd. You also see an older man who looks to be a veteran. His crutch must have slipped, since he’s lying on the ground, looking hurt.

As Thia looks around, she sees a makeshift crutch lying on the ground, a few meters from the veteran. As she approaches him, crutch in hand, she is startled by the sight. Half of his face and head were scarred, his lips and cheeks burnt away to reveal two rows of teeth in a permanent hideous grin, the skin drawn tight over his half- bold head, his right ear little more than a diminuitive indistinguishable blob. She had read about such injuries, but never seen them up close.
The man was blind, from the looks of it, and had fallen, with a little trickle of blood running down his forehead. As she looked around, trying to get the veteran some space, she saw a shocked little girl, staring in horror at the disfigured veteran, before being picked back up again from the relieved mother. Only a few moments had passed, but the crowd was calming down, now that they realised that no one was shooting at them.

Thia would take a moment to gather herself, relieved the mother found her little girl. Now that the crowd was calming down, she’d bring her attention back to the veteran, “Excuse me sir,” she’d smile even though the man couldn’t see it. Her mother always reminded her when she was young not to judge those who are different, regardless of how difficult it could be sometimes. We all carry hideous scars from the war, inside and out. Her mother’s voice would play over in Thia’s mind as she’d offer help to the veteran. “I believe this may belong to you” She’d guide the crutch to the mans hand. “Are you hurt?”
Tarian sighed and took a long whiff of her tea. “Capable enough.” She took a sip: the taste was luxurious but subtle, like she imagined how fine silks would feel, but in liquid form. “You want fast, you want the best, you’d best be off to Broad Street Agency. Me, I’m a freelancer. I’ll get the job done and I don’t ask why, and I don’t share your information with anyone.” Another sip. “Broadsters chat with each other. They say your information is private, but every Broadster in Duskrock will know everything you tell even one of them, and by no more than ten days after your case is over.”
“As far as capable of what, shall I list?” She bounced her index finger in the air with every point, but never opened her fist to reveal the locket inside. “Apothecary. Bodyguard. Bounty hunter. Chirurgeon. Doctor. Equestrian. Fencing. Farming. Gambling. Gathering. Heavy lifting. Interrogation.” Another sip. “Look, there’s a whole alphabet of skills I have. You need me to go on? Or do you have a specific thing you need, Mister...?” Tarian took another long sip of her tea while she eyed Arc up and down and awaited a response.
Her irritation was masked with boredom, but the quick alphabetical recitation of skills implied she was certainly not mentally impaired. As to the quality of her work, that had yet to be seen.

With that Arc sticks out a hand to Tarian, offering a handshake, "The details of this contract can be discussed once we have more privacy, but for now, it's a pleasure to meet you."
Tarian pounded down the remainder of her still-hot tea, much to Thorbek’s chagrin. She snuck her fist into her coin pouch, trying to discreetly swap the palmed locket for a coin.
She set down a silver piece between the teapot and cup.
“Well met, Mister Arc,” she thrust her now empty hand at Arc to return his handshake. “So, what’s your business that needs done? Anything that’ll land me in jail is out, so I won’t do assassinations or drug running or anything of the sort.” Tarian’s grip relaxed when she didn’t feel her strength reciprocated.

Arc rolls his eyes at being called mister, but smirks when Tarian mentions the jobs she won't do, "No worries, in fact, the job I have is quiet the opposite. We're rescue a damsel in distress." His tone hints at some hidden humor but also sarcastic understanding of what the job fully entails.

The veteran gladly accepted the crutch that Thia placed in his hands, but when she asked him whether he was hurt, he pointed to his bleeding forehead, and tried to speak, something that caused him visible distress due to his wounds and scars.
”Nnn... head... hurt... ank you”. It was only now that Thia realised that parts of his tongue were missing too and that the man was mostly mute.

Bellows looked genuinely moved by Corti’s concern. “Aye, we’ve had a tough week. The bosses don’t have a lot of work for us, now the war’s over, and they say they don’t have the money to pay us. We’re here to try and change that, but while wrenches and shovels have a chance to stand up agsinst truncheons, the bosses and guards aren’t beyond using underhanded means. Up by the steel mill, they’ve threatened the foreman directly we’ve heard. But with all the boohaha around that gnome up on the hill, we had a few days’ respite. The problem is keeping the protests going, keeping the morale up.” At this, he laid a heavy arm around Leo’s shoulder, pushing him forwards. “Leo and his friends had an idea though. They wanna use the presentation to help us get our demands heard. We’ve been preparing to barricade the Hill. Blocking the access roads by marching on union square. If they’re not coming towards us, we’ll have to go to them. The presentation will be starting soon, and we’ll get ready in a bit for our march. We’ve got several other factories joining us. Are you in? We could use you to compose a marching song, or give us slogans to shout. In general, the lads seem to like your songs and that’s good for morale.”
————————
The shot in the air had been risky, but it looked like the crowd was calming down. Phew, Brandt thought, he might make it through the presentation without having any more deaths on his hands. Facing the crowd, it was only the roaring applause from the crowds that let him know that Sparks was on stage now. He’d heard his pitch, but was still curious what the audience would think.
————————
Milo had managed to wiggle her way to the front of the line. He knew how to use his elbows to get an advantage, on a small scale as well as in life. Looking up at the podium, he could see a domber looking gunner, the guy who seemed to be in charge. He didn’t know much about military matters, but the fact that the gunner wasn’t wearing guards uniforms or any orders but still looked like he had a handle on the situation led to the logical conclusion that he was a mercenary. Interesting, he thought, so an idealist like Sparks isn’t above hiring muscle...
When the gnome appeared on the podium, the crowd erupted in loud cheers. The feeling of hope was tangible. Derbert Sparks was dressed in a simple, well cut dark suit, with a red waistcoat, a neatly trimmed beard and short, cropped hair.
“Delegates, diplomats, dear ladies and gentlemen,
You all know me as Derbert Sparks, inventor and engineer. Well, what do engineers do? They find solutions to problems.
Corphyra has been wounded deeply, and the road to healing is long and arduous. We see the effects of the war all around us, wounded veterans, orphaned children, marauders in the countryside, a civil war to the north. I think we’d all agree that this isn’t peace.
But... what if we could bring the continent closer together? What if we could ensure that news reached the other end of the continent in a matter of minutes? What if we could educate our children in the best universities in all of Corphyra, because we could travel the continent with ease?”
At that, the large canvases behind Sparks dropped to the ground, revealing a huge machine of metal and brass, with pistons and valves, and clockwork mechanisms assembled in a dazzlingly complex melange of machinery.
“This, ladies and gentlemen, will make it possible. I call it the Sparks Railcoach, running on iron tracks and coal alone. With it, we can shorten the travel time from Duskrock to Daggerfall from six months to six days! Imagine the possibilities!”
”Now, of course, this iron band that unites our continent needs to be built first. It is here that I’m asking all the Corphyrean delegates to contribute, to make this a United Corphyrean stepping stone into the future! We will need thousands of workers, Thranish metalworking experience, Brelish engineers, Cyrean timber, Garronian coal. As the railcoach will do in the near future, the construction of the rail tracks should unite the nations of Corphyra in common toil and commerce!”
At this, the crowd erupted into cheers, caught by the lofty ideas and the great futuristic promises of Sparks, even if the details of the machine would be too complex for any but the initiated to comprehend.

Thia knew the presentation could be starting at any moment, but could never leave a patient without help. She would reach for some medical patching supplies tucked away in her bag. Just before the speech (could be at the end if we don’t want to backtrack)is just beginning Milo walks over to the man that appears to be in charge., the one who fired off his pistol. “Excellent show my good man, Crowds always seem to forget their manners. I’ll have to ask a favor, as a representative of corporations supporting this endeavor, I’m supposed to be up on the dais. My short stature has gotten me pushed around, would you allow me to take my rightful place on this historic day?” As he points to the stage.
"Could you show some proof that you are who you say you are? Sparks didn't say anything about a corporate representative and I'd think that a corporate representative would have better timing than this, considering that today's supposed to be a historic day. It's not that I don't trust you of course, it's just that things are pretty tense and I can't just let people go up to Sparks."

Due to the uncertainty of who may be in the crowd, Thia didn’t want to draw any unwanted attention to herself or her supplies.
Dexterity roll - to see how well she can conceal her medical supplies; how fast she can patch up the veteran.

Once the man has been patched up, she’d ensure he could stand and carry on on his own from here. She’d give him a quick bow of her head out of respect for the veteran, even if he couldn’t see it, before she’d slink away. Thia would use her small nimble stature to her advantage, ducking and weaving through the crowd as she could, in hopes she can make her way a little closer to the stage to get a better view of the machinery.
Another dexterity roll, adding acrobatics to this one - to see how well she does maneuver through the crowd to get closer to the front: 19
[A dice roll inserted itself a the beginning of my post instead of in the spoilers (I wondered where it went when I inserted it, stupid phone posts lol) I just removed it, leaving the 2 intended rolls unchanged in the spoiler section. Sorry!]
just an unstable unicorn.

“Of course, My name is Milo Spudsder of the Spudsder Farm Estates. If you’re from the area, you’d know the name. We supply a hefty amount of produce and very soon meats and livestock goods to the area. Someone has to be responsible to feed all the workers.” Milo points onstage “Collinsworth will vouch for me. You can have one of your guard escort me up.”
