I'm going to be running a very casual game set in Waterdeep, starting with the Dragon Heist adventure. The gimmick of this particular game will be that I'm going to try to keep the game open for new players to swap in (and let players that feel like they've had their fun swap out) as the situation of the game permits. Chances are I'm biting off more than I can chew but I think it will be interesting at the very least. Commitment level is about one post every day or two, if you can't keep up for a while or want to stop for whatever reason just let me know and we'll NPC, mothball or spectacularly kill off your character as per your wishes.
Recruitment
The game is still open to new players, however please PM me if you are interested so we can figure out a good time and place to introduce your character without interrupting the flow of things.
The game is not recruiting at this time.
You may optionally choose one of the following (see next post) NPCs in the Yawning Portal to be friends with at the start of the game; if you do, mention this in your introduction.
The Story So Far
Volo the famous writer and wizard, seeing the party's heroics in fighting off a troll that invaded the Yawning Portal tavern in Waterdeep, requests that they rescue a friend of his called Floon. When they return not just with Floon but another friend, the nobleman Renaer, Volo admits that he has little coin to spare but offers up something interesting as a reward: the deed to a haunted tavern! The party is intent on renovating the place into a functioning tavern and base of operations, but they will need money; a lot of it. They therefore are splitting up into smaller groups to tackle various quests in the hopes of raising the required funds. So far they have rescued a kitten, killed a rogue scarecrow, taken an experimental potion with unwanted side-effects and brought an elf-killer to justice!
Backstory: Rou was once a normal boy on sea with his parents. It was during a calm night an Orc ship attack, killing most of the crew and passengers. Rou was taken by an Orc Captain to be used as a slave. However that rage inside Rou seeing his parents killed didn't quite settle down. The first chance he got he tried to kill the captain. Of course Rou failed being a boy but the captain like his ferocious behavior. He a gave the boy a new name and clamied him as his son.
Coming back from a crashing defeat, Rou finds his way to waterdeep. There seeing a fine Half Orc woman arm wrestling, He likes what he sees and challenges her to a couple of games.
SLAM! The burly dragonborn's arm is forced down to the table, rattling plates and tankards. "Too easy," the large half-orc woman laughs; "that'll be two silver shards."
The dragonborn would be rose red in the face if their kind blushed through their scales; he was expecting his opponent to be tough, but didn't foresee going down quite so quickly. He hands over the shards, stands and finds a less crowded part of the tavern to sulk in.
Seeing the young pirate standing nearby, she tosses a challenge at the lad; "Hey you, wanna try your luck against this?", she says with a fanged smile as she knocks her curled arm on the table, making a loud THUMP. "Looks like you're fresh from the Sea Ward in a getup like that. Don't suppose a sailor like you has much to wager, but what do you say the loser buys the table a round?" Her smile grows.
[If you accept, make a Strength (Athletics) roll.]
Summers in Waterdeep tend to be quite comfortable, for the most part; sometimes, though, warm air pushes up from the south and settles in the valleys north and east of the city. This air gets trapped, creating a hot spell that might last days or weeks. Activity in the city slows to a crawl, since Waterdavians are unaccustomed to such heat.
It is just such a day today.
The Yawning Portal is a famous inn and tavern located in the Castle Ward of Waterdeep. The place is a stone building with a slate roof and several chimneys. Most of the ground floor is taken up by the tavern's common room, which contains a forty foot diameter open well that descends one hundred and forty feet to the first level of the Undermountain, the sprawling dungeon under Waterdeep. The cold, dry air from down below mixes with the hot, humid air from outside to give the tavern a pleasantly cool atmosphere; the Yawning Portal, always a popular destination for adventurers and merrymakers, is even more so on days like these.
[I'd say you have advantage on the roll from being a grappler but it won't matter in this instance, as you will see...]
Yagra blushes, as much at hearing this human speak Orcish as at what he's saying, but quickly laughs it off. "Lets see how you handle yourself at the table before talking about what probably won't come after!" Grinning, she braces her arm against the table and grasps Rou's palm.
"On the count of three."
"One..."
Two..."
[Athletics (Strength) for Yagra] 13
Yagra struggles, but has the advantage; she is close to pinning Rou's arm to the table when suddenly behind her a bald figure covered in eye-shaped tattoos steps out of the shadows, fist raised. "Ya pig! Like killin' me mates, does ya?!" Before Yagra can react, a wild swinging punch strikes the half-orc in the head from behind. Yagra releases Rou's hand with a roar, swinging to stand as she turns to face her assailant. She gives the thug a glance, cracks her knuckles, glances back at Rou, saying "We'll finish this later," and with a sadistic grin leaps at the tattooed figure.
Four other humans are standing around the thug, ready to jump into the fray in assistance. As the brawl begins, a crowd of onlookers start to pack around.
[We're doing relaxed initiative order, so since your roll is greater than or equal to all the NPCs you (or anyone else that rolls a 19 or higher) get to go first.]
Backstory: Crisp, lived an average life, born into a hermit family of Sorcerer's, learning his Wild Magic from his parents. Like his father, he left after reaching adulthood to live out on his own. He lived on his own for a handful of years before heading out to explore more of the world. He eventually found his way into Waterdeep, and after hearing about a famous tavern, he decided to pay it a visit.
He will have been there a couple hours, sitting by himself, watching the patrons come and go. He will have been watching Rou arm wrestle for a little bit.
Crisp, watching the brawl go down, will remain where he is, snuffing out and reigniting a flame in his hand. Waiting to see how this transpires.
EDIT: Initiative Roll if I decide to get involved: 5
Backstory: Nick was bored of his village so he joined the military to get out and learn about the world. After spending a couple of decades there he learned the world turned out to be a bunch of lords squabbling over some stupid land. He decided to go and experience something he felt was interesting, so when he heard about the Yawning Portal in Waterdeep, he felt like that was a good place to start.
Noticing the disturbance in the bar, Nick watches the half-orc and human prepare to fight the band of thugs and thinks that he should probably join in to make it a fairer fight.
