OOC: For the sake of moving forward, I'll assume you're each grabbing three or four of the staffs.
Water is at chest level by the time you reach the stairs to the deck. The creaking and groaning of wood, and the splintering of the hull resound behind you as the sky reappears. On one side of the ship, some of the crew of The Flying Mermaid are cheering, watching the Raven's Claw sink in front of their eyes. Captain Thitcher and a few others look on worriedly, waiting for you to ascend the stairs, with a clear look of relief when they finally see you. On the other side, Bohmar follows the last of his crew, leaping off the side of the ship toward the Dumb Luck I. "See ye when I see ye then!" he says before jumping. His short legs cause him to miss the leap, and he sputters into the waters of the Trackless Sea, but his crew is already fast unrolling a ladder for him.
There are ladders being unrolled along the side of The Flying Mermaid as well. A leap to the deck looks difficult, as quickly as the Raven's Claw is taking on water.
Zane is seeing the situation and quickly realizes that Hox can probably fly and be safe, so it's just himself, Killian and Gruun. He takes a few steps towards The Flying Mermaid and even though he's carrying stuff under both arms, he tries to accelerate to the maximum (using Feline Agility), takes as long of a leap as he possibly can, shouting as he goes, "Killian you can do it!" (bardic inspiration to Killian).
(Also using insipiration for advantage on whatever this roll might be)
Killian, knowing that swimming in armor with a shield is tough, and feeling inspired by Zane, will race for the boat, and leap!!
(Leaving die rolling to Barty? I'm still shy about that, and I also don't know if I need Athletics to clear the railing, or Acrobatics to land on the other ship, or even if the ships are close enough to jump the gap...)
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. Here's my D&D stuff. I love it so.
OOC: Depending on how it was described, this will be either an Acrobatics check or an Athletics check to reach the ladders on the side of The Flying Mermaid and grab hold (Acrobatics for Zane, Athletics for Killian). Will give Gruun and Hox some time before botting and resolving (looks like Virst has been offline for about a week, so not sure if we've lost our little kobold friend).
Killian and Gruun easily clear the distance to The Flying Mermaid, grabbing the railing and pull themselves over. Zane loses his footing on the slick railing, tumbling into the waters below and losing his grip on the three staffs he carries. They plummet to the depths, out of sight. "The Box", however, is surprisingly buoyant for its low weight, and is easy for Zane to keep ahold, and with Hox's help he makes it to a ladder on the side of the ship and climbs aboard.

The return to Luskan is much less eventful. A short vigil is held for the lost crew of The Flying Mermaid upon its arrival, and a few of the Schoolchildren bring you to Roccar's hideout, where he and Ritska await you.
Roccar is in a fine mood, even with the loss of three of his staffs, and pays his promised 5000 gold pieces. "I am glad to see you return. There have been...developments since you left. It seems the situation in Sundabar has grown even worse. Some of the slaadi discovered the portal and tricked their way through to Luskan, impersonating me and an aasimar companion, Karst. But the good news is, another party of adventurers from Sundabar have survived and found their way here. If you are willing, take up the fight with us. I can take you to meet them shortly, but I believe Ritska has a reward of her own for you," he says.
"You killed my imp," Ritska greets you, her tail flickering in irritation, "But at least you waited to do it until he had given your location to Bohmar."
She smirks, "You have exceeded my expectations. I am aware that you feel you have been coerced, but you must understand that Roccar and I need people we can trust with the slaadi running rampant. You have done more than prove yourselves. You have earned yourselves a bit of an upgrade. Each of you, tell me your weapon of choice, and I will have forged for you a weapon worth your mettle."
Killian looks Ritska in the eyes, "Next time, let us know you plan to have us followed, and perhaps I will not kill it. You are right, I do not like being led, and I will not work for you, but I like less what these Slaadi are doing. This first, why are vampires mixed up in this, what do they have to gain that they would allow themselves to be carried over water?"
Whatever the answer... "I feelyou still have not given a full answer, but I know it does not come naturally to the likes of you. I would see this through a while longer. And yes, I will take a better sword, but I will keep my shield," she glances at the battered thing.
Identifying the box reveals nothing; it certainly holds properties as something wondrous would, based on its reaction to the water that had been around it. Yet, it does not detect as magic and, according to Zane's ritual, holds no magical properties and is not affected by any magical effect.
The staffs are indeed staffs of the magi, as Roccar had explained were stolen along with the box.
Zane has been all quiet all this time. He has dried off, but still mourns the loss of three of such powerful items that he held.
"Thank you for the offer, but my weapon of choice is my wit and my charm. If you insist on forging something then maybe one of the others could get a second weapon or a shield to use in my stead."
He sighs and tries to ask more questions one last time, "What's the box? Why were a bunch of vampires stealing all of these items? For whom were they stealing them? Where were they taking them? How are the slaadi connected to all of this?"
"Very well. Name the weapon, whatever it is, and you will have it," Ritska answers, her glare matching Killian's.
"As for your questions, you have earned an honest answer, and it is simple: We do not know. We came upon The Box recently, and I have been trying to determine exactly what it is to no avail. Divination has no effect on the object, yet it cannot be damaged. It resists any amount of force, yet it seems to be beyond magic. Our study was interrupted by the thieves, and I learned that they were vampires through Pipyap, no sooner than you did. I do not know where they were going, why they would put themselves in such harm's way, or how they are connected to the slaadi. As Roccar mentioned, there are others he has been working with that could use your help in defeating the slaadi; since we have a shared disinterest in each other, I will use my own resources to further investigate what these vampires were up to," Ritska answers.
OOC: +1 longsword has been added to Killian's inventory. Each character has received 1,250 gold pieces and 2,000 XP for recovering the stolen items.

(OOC: Zane would have ritual cast Identify on everything they brought over from that ship on the journey back, starting with the box)
