OOC: Botting Killian and Hox for this round with shortbow/longbow attacks at the swarms by the sails. Using the averages from the last two rounds for attacks at the bats by the sails, and assuming standard melee attacks if they enter melee range.
Also assuming Gruun retrieves his javelins and Hox and Zane retrieve their ammunition, all of it will be used in this battle, so half have been removed from their inventories.
Shortbow vs. Swarm of Bats: 24Damage: 10 Longbow vs. Swarm of Bats: 23Damage: 2
As the archers continue to fire from the safety of the tiny hut and Gruun chases a few more bats away with the last of his javelins, the majority have been turned away from the sails of The Flying Mermaid. Within a few minutes, a pile of bats lines the surrounding of Zane's magical dome, most severed by a greataxe and longsword. The remainder have been chased away, and the damage to the sails is moderate, but not so bad that the ship is unable to continue giving chase.
With the sails wounded, however, it is a long and uncomfortable day giving chase. For the first few hours, the Raven's Claw begins to gain ground, until the sailors of The Flying Mermaid are able to repair the chewed sails and rigging. To make matters worse, the second ship spotted earlier in the morning is clearly heading toward this pair of ships, and at a rapid pace, possibly enhanced by magical means. Finally, just an hour or two from sunset, you close with the thieves' ship.
The Raven's Claw seems oddly peaceful, but the sight that greets you is even stranger still. The ship is crewed by elderly sailors, dressed in worn out clothes, with ill-kempt beards and harshly sun burnt skin. It's as if they have been working in the same clothing without a haircut for years. They go about their tasks with placid looks on their faces, calm and silent.
OOC: This is another social encounter where your responses will have a great impact. How does each character respond to the current situation, in either first or third person?
Gruun warily eyes the sailors while clutching his Greataxe. After watching them work for a few moments he grabs one while they are walking by. He stares into their face looking for any form of recognition before releasing them.
Zane asks the captain about the position of the ship when it's time for boarding and he goes and sits down right next to the railing at the point that would be closest to the other ship.
Hox hops aboard the other ship with Gruun, choosing to scour the top deck for any lanterns or the like. Before doing so, he'd want to check the entrances to the lower levels, checking to see if they're closed and if they're locked up.
OOC: Gruun, Hox and Zane have each received 100 XP.
While Zane begins his casting, Gruun and Hox leap aboard the Raven's Claw. A sailor tries to skirt around Gruun, but is forced to stare at the bugbear as he grabs him and directs his face toward him. "You must be the new arrivals," the man says calmly, in a scratchy, dehydrated voice. "The masters have not forgotten you."
Hox rummages through some crates on the deck; most contain simple rations and supplies, and one contains a half dozen lanterns in a state of disrepair. The doors below leading below deck are closed, but not locked.
All around the deck, the crew stops what they are doing and begins calmly walking toward two ballistae on the ship's sides.
A shout is carried over the wind to the Raven's Claw. The mystery ship is closing in; a war ship covered in plated green armor. Its deck is bristling with weapons. Standing on its prow, a short figure is holding a hammer above his head, shouting and hollering as it gains ground.
Gruun motions Hox to go toward one of the ballistae while he moves toward the other. (If they begin pointing them at our ship I would like to break it with me axe)
Killian uses her Divine Sense to determine if these old sailors are undead (or celestials or fiends, but that seems unlikely). To Captain Thitcher, as she prepares to board the other ship, "Do you know this green ship?"

At first, all you hear is the sound of the figure whooping, but when you tune your focus to the approaching ship, a single sentence is carried to you by the wind, in a faint but gruff voice.
"Grab that box, boys and girl! Your backup's here!"
For Killian:
You do not sense the presence of celestials or undead that is not behind total cover. However, you do detect the presence of a fiend - around 20 feet away from you, the captain and Zane, though it is not visible.
Captain Thitcher's eyes are narrowed, staring at the approaching ship in confusion. "I do not...is that a dwarf on the prow?" he asks. A new tiny hut appears around Zane.
On the Raven's Claw, the sailors reach the ballistae. Gruun starts to approach one. With two sailors at each ballistae, one calmly picks up a javelin laying nearby and places it in the ballista while the other turns a crank. The ballistae each turn with the crank, turning toward Gruun and Hox.

Killian turns from the Captain, draws her longsword and runs about twenty feet sort of towards Zane (vaulting onto the other ship, if that's where she is headed).
Move: Towards that spot, while not exactly looking that way Action: Swing through the apparently empty space about twenty feet from Zane. If something connects, she will swing again.

A shriek of "No!" is cut short by Killian's deadly accuracy. Green blood appears from thin air in front of the paladin's first slash, and the creature that had been hovering there is no longer invisible. Laying in two pieces at Killian's feet is the form of an imp. It slowly dissolves into a puddle of goo, which evaporates into the air in a few moments.
OOC: Assuming Gruun is following through with attacking the ballista, since it is aiming at him.
Greataxe vs. Ballista:14 Greataxe vs. Ballista: 19
Ballista vs. Gruun (Disadvantage-Melee Range): 17 Ballista vs. Hox (Disadvantage-Dodge): 23Damage: 14
The ballistae fire. Hox has to practically fall over backwards to avoid being pinned through the skull. The other jams in its attempt to fire at Gruun in such short range. It does not seem to bother the old sailors, who set about to calmly free the mechanism as Gruun tries to smash the weapon to pieces. His first strike shatters a piece of the wood, but his second misses and plunges through the deck.
The green ship is only a hundred feet away now, and not slowing. The figure on the prow takes the shape of a familiar dwarf as the ship nears: Bohmar Brineboots, the shady cleric from Luskan. "Brace for impact!" he shouts, ending with a whoop.
Zane braces for impact by grabbing something nearby in a catlike manner, ready to climb up, whichever way that may be in a few moments. He then turns to Killian, "What was that?!"

Ballista vs. Gruun: 18Damage: 18
The construction of the ballista is sturdy, and there is a lot of thick wood for Gruun to chop through to get to the critical functions of the weapon. Two swings of the greataxe tear a solid chunk of it apart. As the bugbear moves across the deck to brace with Hox, the ballista fires again, a grazing impact to Gruun. And then, chaos.
The noise of the sudden impact of ships is deafening. The green armor of the new arrival tears through the hull of the Raven's Claw like it is made of paper, and the impact sends Gruun falling prone on the deck, keeping Hox standing by providing a cushion of flesh. The Flying Mermaid leans precariously to one side for a moment as the Raven's Claw is jammed into it in the chain collision. Both sailors manning the damaged ballista fall overboard, one crunching hard into the deck railing, and the sailors at the other ballista are floored, sliding to a stop near Hox.
Whether intentional or not, Bohmar Brineboots leads the way, tumbling from the prow and landing face-first on the deck of the Raven's Claw. A dozen men and women outfitted for battle leap from the green ship, which now prominently displays Dumb Luck I on its side, and follow the dwarf as he crashes through the doors leading below deck. "Do what you came here to do, but do it quickly. We're sinkin' these damned fang-suckers!" he shouts to Gruun and Hox. His voice, magically intensified, can be heard by all on the Flying Mermaid as well.
Gruun will ready and throw his remaining two Javelins at the bats still attacking the sail rigging.(With Disadvantage this time)
