"As much as I'd like to form a subcommittee to talk to a woodman," jokes Abner, teasingly, "Why not just go straight to this ruined manor? This Jug guy told Dirk it was ruined and appeared to be abandoned, but he didn't go in. What more could he add?" He pauses, then adds thoughtfully, "Unless we think we need a guide or something. I suppose we're in no rush."
He cranes his neck looking for Jambiya. Did she forget his candied pears?
"If there's a profit or reward, do y'suppose Dirk wants a cut or commission or something?"
“Woodsmen tend not to have much in the way of conversational subtleties,” Therne says with a shrug. “But he may have observed some details he felt no need to pass on to a tavernkeep. Even one who is a retired adventurer. And he could tell us what common threats the woods hold.”
“Anyone’s welcome to come along who’s willing to. Rare’s the situation that isn’t helped by a second set of eyes, or hands.”

Red whispers Brother Brozak, that is such a badass move.
I think Lady Therne is very wise. And, can I add, it is late afternoon already. 20 miles is a full day travel - if we leave tomorrow morning (baring some delay) and camp near our destination, we can approach the following daylight for an easier investigation. We can do a bit of preparing and make a good start.
Red already has adequate supplies, but will spend the afternoon trying to scrape together stuff to pick locks. He has proficiency, but does not own thieves tools. He does not have enough gold for a full set of thieves' tools, and such things are not easy to find anyway, but he'll check in at the Welcome Exchange and around the Spring for limited tools and parts. Not a big deal, he has a crowbar, but trying to think ahead and avoid damage to the Redmanes' house.
In the evening, when whoever goes to the Lodge goes, Red will stay around the Seldom Spring. He wants a chance to play for the crowd, going for a lively fiddle vibe, or offering to open or accompany if someone else is booked. When not fiddling, he'll listen for stories and lore in the common room.
If the chance comes, Red can give out Bardic Inspiration if someone needs it (add 1d6 to attack, save or ability check in the next 10 min)
If it matters: Investigation 14 Performance 9 [ooc first dice of the campaign!]
"All right, well, what exactly do we want to ask him, then? Just more detail and background on what he saw and knows about the Redmanes?" Therne is a little nervous about being the front person.
"Have no worries, Miss Therne, we shall figure that out together. We should probably start with if he noticed anything out of the ordinary, or a weird vibe. What sorts of beasts live in that area. This should be easy. And don't forget, Abner and I will be with you."
Brozak gives Therne an encouraging grin and a light pat on the back.

Brozak - Red Dragonborn Paladin, lvl 2, Never Winter, Seldom Spring
[OOC: Yup, I just want to make sure that anyone who isn't going has any questions they want to ask of the woodsman spelled out, so we know what points we want to hit.]
The three of you head over to the nearby hunting lodge as evening falls. The large wooden cabin glows with warm firelight from within. The door is unlocked, and as you step through into the cosy but spacious interior you see wooden furniture, thick rugs and a wide assortment of trophies mounted on the walls. A large, middle-aged half-orc with four black dreadlocks squats by the roaring fireplace, tossing dried chunks of willow into the flames. A spiral staircase and a low balustrade dominate the upper section of the lodge, with closed doors leading to rooms beyond.
An elderly human of Tethyrian lineage lounges on a plush chair nearby, reading a leather-bound tome. As you enter he tilts the book forward and regards your trio, giving a welcoming smile from ear-to-ear. "Welcome friends! Please make yourselves comfortable. Are you fresh off the road? The Hunting Lodge is a great respite for the weary traveller." He sets his book down as he speaks, rising from his chair and slowly making his way over to an end-table with the deliberate movements of a man in his twilight years. As he finishes his introduction, he pours three small cups of a strong-smelling herbal tea and offers them to you as he implores you to relax and take seats.
Red and Adri
After your companions depart for the lodge, it steadily gets quite busy in the common room. You soon notice that Jambiya has stopped serving to gaze at an old wooden doll hanging on the wall.
“Refills?” asks Dirk, suddenly at your side with a pitcher of ale. As he starts pouring, he also begins to tell a tale. “She could barely stand when we found her,” he says to the pair of you, motioning toward the cherished goblin. “The Ripped Beard tribe didn't just attack dwarves and humans. They raided goblins too. We believe they killed Jambiya's parents and took her among their prisoners.” He pauses for a moment as a customer asks which direction the toilets are.
Returning to your conversation, he thinks for a moment. “Thankfully, there was one among them who took pity on her and sheltered her from his bloodthirsty kin. She called him Da-Pa,” Dirk continues with a smile, “though I doubt that was his real name.” He chuckles. “He was the largest orc I've ever seen, and had a huge mess of alarming ginger hair! Yet he was as gentle as any orc you could hope to meet.” He scratches his chin before adding, “I believe he was a cook, of all things.”
Jambiya turns in your direction, her broad smile brightening the common room. “Da-Pa!” she shouts gleefully, to the clear confusion of several less attentive patrons. “That was her only childhood possession,” Dirk continues, pointing to the doll, “aside from a dirty loincloth.”
“Fine orcish craftsmanship!” Adds Brunthor cheerily, as he passes to set up the stage for Red's performance - his metal foot clanging against the wooden floor. Dirk smiles and silently bids you farewell. Proceeding to the next table, he soon starts reciting another familiar tale for his latest audience.

As far as lockpicks go, you can't find much except for cracked rib bones amongst the morsels of leftover food piled upon a counter near the kitchen door. Aside from that, you may have more luck approaching other patrons. The only typically unscrupulous types that you can spot are the tiefling that you saw enter earlier and a young lightfoot halfling man who sits at the bar with a mug of warm milk, fondly watching Jambiya. You know that lockpicks are an item not oft sold in reputable areas, and asking for them or being found with them on your person can often lead to suspicion - be it misplaced or otherwise.

"Good evening to you, good sir. We were looking for a woodsman by the name of Juglut. We have a few questions we would like to pose to him."
Brozak tries to put on a friendly smile.
The man opens his mouth to reply but is interrupted. "Who's asking?" The half-orc stands to his full height, letting his thick ropes of hair tumble down his back. He turns to you and you can see a large scar shaped like a claw mark running up the left side of his grey-skinned neck below his ear. He doesn't appear aggressive, but his stature is intimidating nonetheless.

Thanks for the info, Red is going to drop the hunt until we have more time, money, and goodwill built up. Dirk is the only person I think would understand right now and he seems too busy. Though if he mentions Hanjo the nimble-fingered again maybe I'll try to explain
Red will help Brunthor get things arranged. Thank you for the stage work Brunthor, and thank you for the gig Dirk. Are there any tunes you care to hear, or advice on your patron's preferences? My gut feel is to be pretty lively - "Fast and Loud wins the Crowd", maybe one tear-jerker in the middle to build back up from. Jambiya, is there sweet cider or something else for a being trying to keep his wits? And do you have a song you want?
Red is a very moderate drinker anyway, but staying sober for the show and early travel he's cutting off the ale
[ooc look who made the wrong assumption about the best team for the Lodge. oof.]

"Ah, we haven't had a fast song in at least a moon's passing. None of the travelling minstrels have had the talent for it! Please do try, I'm sure the few patrons we have would enjoy it. I'd bet that the noise will carry to the outlying steadings too and bring a few more faces in!" He almost bursts with excitement and heads off to spread the word.
Jambiya strolls up and hands you a pitcher of sour-smelling liquid. "Pear cider we have, my dear! Pressed the fruit meself! Dirk said it's on the house for you and your folk if you can rustle up a good tune." She hums proudly and spins away to serve another patron.

Brozak, Therne and Abner want go to see Juglut at the lodge in the evening to see if he has more information on the Redmane house.
Red and Adri want to stay at the inn, where Red wants to puts on a performance.
Then you all want to set off in the morning.
Happy with that?
