I think it may be more dangerous to let whatever it is be behind us. But you are right we need to keep track of the path. Could Br. Brozak stay at the edge and watch our backs, and Mst. Abner position midway between him and us?

" 'Scuse me. " With a concerned look on his brow, Abner steps forward and creeps closer through the bushes toward the mewling, his crossbow (and a spell or two) at the ready, seeking the source of the sound.
(OOC: Sorry, Red! Abner and I missed your suggestion. Not at all out-of-character for Abner to not pay attention, but I usually I read the posts more carefully!)
Red tries to grab Abner by the collar (Mage Hand if necessary) Wait a second, good sir. The Druid should lead, and lady Therne has raised a question. I proposed an alternative, but it isn't agreed to yet.
dexterity check (?) 5
Red will follow the plan he suggested if agreed, but stay behind Therne. If she doesn't go into the woods he won't either.

Abner pushes on ahead, melding into the bushes at the side of the trail. With Therne at the helm, Adri and Red quickly follow him, whilst Brozak guards the path. As the group of three of you pick your way through the overgrown brush searching for the cat, Red briefly catches sight of movement nearby in his periphery. As he turns his head, he suddenly finds himself looking into a pair of crafty, beady black eyes! Before he has a chance to warn his companions, the black, feathered creature bursts from the bushes with a rusted shortsword to hand and moves to attack!
Combat
Abner:
Your light-footed nature saved you from ambush, you stealthily moved past the attacker and now stand 15 ft. on the opposite side of it from your companions - still unnoticed as far as you're aware. You didn't see the ambush coming however, and count as surprised.
Brozak:
You are thirty feet from Adri, Red and Therne with difficult terrain in the form of grasping underbrush between you. You are currently unaware that an ambush has occurred.
Adri and Therne:
The creature has sprung it's trap on Therne, and is within slashing range of her. Both of you failed to spot the ambush, and count as surprised as the creature moves to attack. Adri and Red stand adjacent just behind Therne, roughly 10 ft. from the creature.
Red:
You saw the ambush just as it happened, and therefore get to take part in the surprise round.

Order of Initiative: (Surprise: Enemy, Red) Enemy, Therne, Abner, Red, Brozak, Adri.
The ambusher stands roughly 5 ft. tall and is covered in thick black feathers. It wears brown robes which help it blend in with the forest, and a dark beak protrudes from beneath its hood.
The creature, having just burst from the foliage makes a wicked stab downwards towards Therne's midriff with its shortsword.
Enemy Shortsword Attack: 20 Damage: 5
The sword strikes true and makes a shallow gash along Therne's side.

Order of Initiative: Enemy, Therne, Abner, Red, Brozak, Adri.
The creature claps a hand around one side of it's head, pulling the brown hood tight around where it's ears would be. It's beady eyes begin to glow bloodshot, and it manically swings it's shortsword in Therne's direction whilst repeatedly making the sound of a twanging bowstring.
Enemy Shortsword Attack: 24 Damage: 8
The shortsword catches Therne across the face with the flat of the blade, knocking her to the ground.
Suddenly, from the cover of the underbrush 50 ft. further from the ambusher, two arrows fly from the bushes to strike at Red, catching him by surprise. The two creatures who fired them making themselves visible.
Enemy Shortbow Attack: 24 Damage: 9
Enemy Shortbow Attack: 24 Damage: 8
The arrows strike Red in his right thigh and the right side of his ribs, dropping him to one knee. He just manages to see a pair of the bird-like creatures in the bushes celebrating - mimicking the sounds of applause at each other, before consciousness slips away from him.
[OoC]: Damn that was lucky. Forgive me if I'm wrong but I think you got taken down to 0hp didn't you? If you lose enough hp to take you down to 0 exactly, you're not dying - just unconscious - and don't need to make death saving throws.
EDIT: Completely ignore that. I've just checked and it appears that that is a house rule that I've been playing for 6 years and just kind of bled into the real rules in my head. We'll keep it RAW.
At the sounds of combat, Brozak runs forward with all haste to rejoin his companions with a shout, “BAHAMUT’S WILL!!!”
[OoC]: Abner and Red are before you - but if you want to leave that action there as a placeholder, I'll assume that is what you want to do on your turn and narrate that before passing over to Adri.
