OOC: I was going to buy a spyglass, but then I saw the cost -- darn you, high-quality glass! Did the book Therne read mention Captain Flindbar at all?
"He's very ...eager," Therne replies to Ebokk. "How long are you expecting us to be at sea? I'd be interested in learning how to sail and navigate, if there's enough time to learn."
"Ah but of course! Three days there and three days back should be enough time to at least get you to grips with the basics my small friend." The dwarf says with a genuine smile.
Dirk returns with a tray of drinks, quickly scans the inn to make sure he isn't needed, then takes a seat beside Ebokk. "Have my recommendations agreed to sail, master Lockforge?" Dirk asks with a wink in your direction.
"It appears so. We have much of the day ahead of us, and the journey to The Clan's Hope should only take us a few hours at most. I think I'll stay for lunch before leaving, I shall meet you all at the start of the western road in four hours." Once the dwarf is happy that you've understood his instruction, he is regaled with a tale by Dirk centred around a sturdy dwarven boot currently mounted above the hearth.
[OoC]: Spyglasses are insanely expensive! As it happens, there is mention of Captain Flindbar:
Roughly 50 years ago, the mad Captain Flindbar and his pack of bloodthirsty gnolls completely destroyed a small port town just north of the Cloud Peaks. Shortly after, they stole a nearby ship and made a big impression on the Sea of Swords in a short space of time.
Aatush's story makes no mention of ever meeting or fighting Flindbar himself.
Did Abner recognize the runic tattoo he saw on Ebokk's head?

In any event, Abner will ask Dirk about both of these things, when he has a moment. Also: Has Dirk been to this island? Is he familiar with it? Any advice? Whose clan?
Abner toys with his new whistle, but knows better than to blow it inside the inn (even though he's sorely tempted.)
The Clan's Hope is the ship my friend, a couple hours to the ship then 3 days sailing to the island - as yet unnamed. A little on the nose for a ship's name, but that is not uncommon. We'd plenty of sailors in the poorer parts of Neverwinter where I grew up.(a bit of a shudder at the memory) And a hint - pirate stories are exciting for the landlubber, but in poor taste in the company of honest sailors, unless it is tales of their defeat.

OOC: 6 days isn't enough time to get proficiency in anything, so I expect Therne doesn't need to purchase her own set of navigator's tools, but she can if that's what would be recommended. Also, does the book give a hint as to Flindbar's race? If he was active 50 years ago, is he no longer in his prime, or is he a member of one of the longer-lived races?
Ebokk looks to Red, "I couldn't say. I'm no sailor, but it's his ship, so I assume he's the cap'n. As for the name, it's the one that stuck out to me the most when I was lookin' for a ship. Hired them straight away and didn't look back."
[OoC]: It's not enough time to become proficient, that would take a few weeks. But somebody on the ship can probably show her how to follow navigation charts and she might be able to pick up some tools on the journey. As for Flindbar, there's no mention of his race. The book specifically states that the pirate made a short impression in a short space of time, implying that he's hasn't been active for some years.

What some will call a bad way to choose a ship, but those folks lack poetry. You should make your own good omens whenever you can. Besides, the songs we write will come out better with a well-named ship. A good song is a good reason for Milil to have a word with Valkur on our behalf.
Abner leaves a couple of gold pieces with Maldorn for his hospitality, then heads to the rendezvous at the western road.
He continues to fidget with his new whistle. (OCC: Red, it may be more of an apito, but hopefully it will come in useful.) He's in an even more upbeat mood than usual. He's never been on a boat before!
Just after lunch, the four of you are ready to embark upon your journey when you are approached by Adri. She thanks each of you quickly for the coin made from your adventure at Redmane's manor, then bids you all farewell as she has urgent business to attend to at the temple of Selûne in Neverwinter.
After you have said your goodbyes, you all meet with Ebokk on the western road and begin your short journey towards the Clan's Hope. The three hour journey is filled with excited chatter about your upcoming voyage, and even Ebokk himself seems to be bursting with enthusiasm. Barring a quick break for food and nature's calling, the walk to the coast is uneventful.
As you crest a grassy hill, a small bay stretches before you, and you can see a three-masted barquentine anchored nearby in the still waters at the edge of the vast Sea of Swords. "A-ha!" Lockforge claps his hands together and picks up his pace as he waddles down the hill towards a skiff beached on the pebbly shore. The dwarf quickly climbs in and takes up oars. The little boat is crowded as you climb in, and Brozak's muscled frame manages to easily push you out. The few minutes bobbing along as Ebokk rows are a strange sensation. Most of you have never been at sea before, and each of you notice different things about the short, sunny journey to the Clan's Hope. Abner focusing on the movement of the ship and the ripples in the water, Therne on the variety of coastal birds swooping in and out as they dive for food, Red taking in the beauty of the Sword Coast from a new perspective and Brozak admiring the strength and might of the waves.
Eventually, you reach the side of the ship and are able to climb a rope ladder strung over the side. As you climb onto the deck you notice that the ship is roughly 100 ft. bow to stern and perhaps 50 ft. wide. A quarterdeck dominates towards the stern, upon which a couple of weather-beaten humans are hauling barrels. The main deck is bustling with activity as you come aboard, where you can make out that there are roughly 30 crew members, all human except for a single orc. Surprisingly, the orc is full-blooded unlike Adri, and it appears that the other crew are avoiding him by having him clean the rust from an iron grate that leads below deck. Therne and Red also notice what appears to be a 6 ft. tall, wrinkled humanoid with a large patterned shell sat close to the figurehead with its legs swinging out over the water.
After you take in the sights, smells and sounds of a ship full of sailors, Ebokk calls to a man by the main-mast who saunters over. The human stands 6' 2", with a shaved head and a neatly trimmed beard. "Bosun Grout; meet Redemption, Therne, Abner and Brozak!" Ebokk beams as he introduces you - gesturing to each of you in turn.
"The rules are simple here. Keep fighting to a minimum. Don't cheat at dice. Don't get in the way." The blunt man gives a quick half-smile (which everybody but Abner recognises as insincere) and heads back to his work, not caring for extended introductions.
"Well, make yourselves at home. I imagine we'll be setting sail soon! Three days of ocean air, I hope you find your sea-legs quickly!" He points to a pair of doors beneath the quarterdeck, "Crew quarters are through there. I made sure to reserve eight hammocks and trunks, but I'll let Grout know that we only need the four." He gives a smile and a nod and turns to leave before stopping himself. "Oh, and one more thing; if any of you do wish to help out on the voyage, please ask Grout before getting in anybody's way!" The dwarf heads over to the quarterdeck, leaving the four of you under the suspicious eyes of the almost-entirely human crew.
Yaro and Zagrot
The two of you can't help but notice the new guests as they climb onto the ship and are introduced to Bosun Grout. Not a single one of them a human, it almost feels like a blessing after the isolation you've both faced to have such a menagerie on board.
Zagrot, your work on the main deck is almost finished now, and with it drawing closer to the evening, it'll soon be time for food and watching the rest of the crew socialise, gamble and drink.
Yaro, although not quite as isolated as the orc on deck that you've barely managed to speak a word to, you're also glad for the varied company that has made its way to the Clan's Hope. Being here of Ebokk's invitation means you can go wherever you wish and aren't required to work - a fact that has been noticed by some of the crew in the day that you've spent on the calm waters.

Abner approaches the dwarf, who is now sat upon the quarterdeck and enjoying a pork pie. "Back when I was a boy, master half-elf. As far as Red can tell, the crew are happy. It isn't so much that Grout resents you - he seems wary and short of patience. Most others seem indifferent and don't approach you yet.
After a half hour on the ship, everybody is called to the hold beneath the deck where a pot-bellied man is handing out bowls of stew, along with metal cups of a fragrant rum. The majority of the crew go to their own social circles, and Ebokk is nowhere to be seen at the moment. The hold smells of beef stock, sweat and salt. The sounds of waves gently lapping against the hull and the slow sway of the ship relaxes the mind and body. The area here is lit with candles, and areas are partitioned with makeshift linen dividers that separate dens of hammocks. Abner, Brozak, Ebokk, Red, Therne and Yaro have all been quartered at the divide closest to the bow which is occupied solely by Zagrot. The area is quite spacious however, as the spare hammocks and trunks have now been removed and replaced with a few sealed crates that serve as seating. A small porthole allows one to see out a few feet above the waves at the sun setting behind the cliffs of the Sword Coast.

For Yaro and Zargot: a Tiefling joins your bunkroom, slight of build, red skin, clean-shaven, with slight fangs and yellow-gold eyes. Orangish horns, on the small side, curl back and around like a ram out of short black hair. Silver rings in piercings on ears and eyebrows. His tail is strait and smooth and tapers at the tip. He plucks a fiddle left-handed to punctuate his speech
Ahoy bunkmates. Redemption, I go by, Redemption Malxis. Us four have been working together for a while. We are an odd set, but honest. squint your eyes and look closer - I'm not between you and your ambition - I am a poster girl with no poster - I am thirty-two flavors and then some as are we all.
"The most important step a person can take is always the next one." - Dalinar Kholin; Oathbringer
Pleased to ship out with you.
