Abner tucks the rusty crossbow bolts into his own bolt case and dusts himself off. Then he tenses and opens his eyes wide as a loose thought bubbles to the surface.
"Not going far... Just to that tree," he announces. He points to the closest tree along the treeline.
Taking advantage of the long grass, and becoming very alert, Abner ducks down and carefully and quietly crosses the remaining 40 feet to the treeline, near the tree he indicated.
Abner crouches and slinks through the long grass, unnoticeable to anybody but Yaro.
As the half-elf makes it to the tree and peeks around it, he sees that the area beyond is shaded well by the canopy - but his elf eyes manage to focus on a group of figures moving in the direction of where Aereek sketched the abandoned camp to be. He can't make out who or what they are, but they seem to be the size of a man, and in a group of at least four.

"The most important step a person can take is always the next one." -Dalinar Kholin; Oathbringer
When Ebokk wiped away the sign's grime, Zagrot practically charged the dwarf with enthusiasm, leaving the boat behind. The orc stared intently at the words. "Gih. Null. Gih. Nuuuullllll. G'noll—" His eyes suddenly lit up up, and he cracked a smile big enough for a few sharp, nasty teeth to show. After a few more seconds of staring, he seemed perplexed. "Land?"
Just then Brozak spoke up with a grin: "The sign says this is Gnoll Island. It looks like we may get to fight Gnolls after all, soup brother. Are you ready?"
Zagrot's smile widened, and he patted the crowbar hanging at his side. "I ready!"
He turned back to the sign. "Island," he muttered matter-of-factly. "Iiiii-Land," he droned, drawing the first syllable out with emphasis.
As everyone discusses the situation at hand, Zagrot rushes to his pack and digs around until he finds his pen. "Is. Is. Is!" he exclaims to himself with incredulous frustration. "Is, I, Is, I. Sovunjok'l jok'l,mastol jok'l jok'l!*"
Returning to the sign with his pack slung onto his back, the barbarian lays his shield on the ground and carefully unfolds a neat piece of paper from his pocket. Then he places it against the placard and begins slowly and fastidiously scrawling upon it, seemingly oblivious to the conversation around him.
For those who speak Goblin:
Sovun jok'l jok'l, mastol jok'l jok'l! - Literally, "when he rattles, he rattles for nothing." A goblin proverb that rebukes the quality of something, usually a machine or contraption for which the operating procedure can't be surmised. The saying is also used as an expression of mild irritation, particularly when someone talks too much but doesn't say anything of substance.
For an orc to use this phrase is curious, since most orcs would likely take a club to whatever was vexing them, and move on.
Red was responding to Therne ...well, the three of us are sneakiest (indicating A, T, R) we can scout while the other 4 follow. Red will sneak about halfway to Anbner's tree, trying to be within say 20 yards so as to be useful, but not so close as to risk giving him away, and try to see what is up

Zagrot gingerly re-folds his sheet of paper, placing it and his pen into a pocket. Picking his shield up, he sees the party's commotion, particularly Abner's whispering, and rejoins them. Then he peers into the distance, towards the trees.
To Brozak, Therne says "I was hoping for something more in-land, yes, but I don't recall any mention of freshwater sources on the island, so whomever is here may have to come to the shore anyway, so if we can't attract anything else, there's still a chance."
She's about to sit down and start calling on the powers of nature when Red notices Abner getting distracted. "I'm going to try and get this spell running as quickly as possible, to minimize the amount of time Abner can get into trouble. But if it finds him first, let me know and I can break out of the spellcasting."When Abner returns with his news, she abandons it, pulling out her shield instead.
"Unfortunately, I haven't yet figured out the trick to flying --" Party members who have been with Therne since the previous adventure might recall a day during the downtime where she returned at the end of the day severely bruised and extremely untalkative "-- but I can be something small, certainly."
If there are four walking, I'd guess there are more at the camp? Sister, could you be something large but fast or sneaky, and get between them and the camp, as we come on them from behind? Even if they are friendly (and what are the odds of that?) it is better to be at the advantage.

OOC: If Therne is a Giant Spider, she gets a ranged web attack, can she use that to actually create a web rather than as a ranged attack, and trap the 4 figures Abner spotted?
Zagrot listens at first, but soon his attention wanders. When it meanders back to the discussion, he mutters under his breath. It sounds distinctly Gobliney and proverbial.
He sidles up to Brozak, and draws his crowbar. "We bust gnoll heads soon, soup-brother?"

[OoC]: I'd say yes, but it'll take longer depending on the size of the web. It takes spiders a while to spin a web.

Tiger-Therne slinks through the brush ahead, staying low with her haunches and shoulders high like a true predator of the jungle. Using her feline sense of smell, she can catch the scent of decay and rot from the clearing. Moving closer, she sees that the trees here part to reveal a clearing with lingering signs of a primitive camp, now long abandoned. The bare frame of an old hut stands crookedly nearby and the remains of a firepit sit in a small recess. As she surveys the scene, a small band of skeletal creatures enter the clearing. With their hunched forms and sloping skulls, they are unmistakably of gnollish origin.
As the forms enter the camp from the east, another group exit from the hut, and begin to spread across the camp - rattling and scurrying. None of the figures seem to have noticed the tiger, nor the tiefling who sneaks alongside her.

[OoC]: They all seem to be using clubs made of branches, rocks, old bits of timber, bones, shells and shark teeth. No ranged weapons so far as you can tell. Again, as far as Abner can tell, the creatures all appear to be the same.
Whispering, "we're too spread out, not sneaky enough for a real ambush? Can we use the south side of the clearing to our advantage? Could you take out goober 10 while we approach, Sister Tigress?"
Red will ready his sling. He'd like to sneak along to n12 with Abner while Therne sneaks then pounces, if we agree. Otherwise, wherever the action takes us.
