OOC: Yes, when you guys did your reconnaissance scouting mission after we killed the initial goblins in Nightstone, Hawk found a cat with wings in one of the houses.
"Oh, how terribly sad. That poor creature...to have lost his people. I can't even imagine. Of course we will deliver him to the next of cat-kin."
Reaching out to pet the winged feline and scratch it under the chin, Zook uses his innate ability to speak with small beasts and tries to communicate with it in gentle tones.
"Have no fear little one, we are friends, and we will take you to a new home where you be safe and cared for with love."
"But I have never seen a cat like you with wings before, I would be most interested to see you fly!"
BTW, does Zook know where Goldenfields is located and how far away it is?
"Oooh, I love looking maps... they're so pretty!! Did you draw these, Bert? Do you have any maps of the Trielta Hills in the Western Heartlands? That's where I come from."
"Yes, let use be off then! I'm actually excited for the journey, I always like seeing new places. Of course, I do hope that we return to Nightstone, because it seems like there is still work to be done, but after a good night's sleep, what better way to spend the day than buy heading out on our feet and going to see a new place!"
Leaning down (obviously not very far) to speak with the winged cat, he gives the create a couple of affectionate scratches under the chin and adds, "You will make a fine traveling companion, my little friend. Shall we walk there or fly?"😂
Once they're ready, Zook fastens his cloak, grabs his staff and prepares to head out with the others.
Bert smiles at Zook's patter, feeling good about getting moving again. (Did Bert find anything in that locked house earlier? And did Halizthan hear Bert's questions about how he came to be at Nightstone and if he was an adventurer?)
He answers Zook's question about his hometown by unfolding his large map of the Faerun he knows and pointing out the Western Heartlands. Unfortunately the close-in map of the area is one he left at home, Bert explains with an apology.
If Bert can stock up on any food, he will. Otherwise he is ready to head out. If it's possible for Bert to cast find familiar the night before this morning, he will. He creates a small but slender screech owl who nestles right into his shoulder.
The tressym will curl on Zook's shoulders, being lazy. (Bert, the locked cottage belongs to Destiny Agganor, the village’s tiefling midwife, and her adult son, Grin. Both survived and were grateful to you)
And Morak is more than happy to give you 5 days of rations each. Find familiar can be cast, and the tressym eyes the owl but makes no aggressive movements.
Near the end of your first day of travelling, you see an enormous tower floating on a billowy cloud a thousand feet overhead. The tower must be hundreds of feet tall, and its spire looks strangely like a pointy wizard’s hat. As the tower drifts closer, stairs made of clouds begin to form underneath it and descend toward you. The stairs seem sized for humans (sorry Zook, they aren't as small as gnomes like) and stop near you.
Once they’re out on the road, Zook strolls along with a lightness in his step. Glad to be outside in nature again, he spends his time whistling, humming, talking to any small wild land creature he sees, including Bert’s owl, and giving the tressym an occasional scratch behind the ears.
He’s still amazed that Bert actually had a map of the Western Heartlands, and getting a few minutes to pore over his homeland from a veritable bird’s eye view is a moment he won’t soon forget.
When the strange floating tower appears above them, Zook stops and watches, his mouth wide open in amazement.
”Well... I’ll be my own uncle Gibbleyank... He was on my mother’s side.”
”How strange... I have never seen anthying like this before. Didn’t they tell us about a floating tower that appeared over Nightstone before all the trouble started?”
As the cloud stairs descend, he simply stands there, watching in utter amazement.
To Mandy, he replies, “I’ve talked to plenty of rocks in my time. Aftera all, I did spent a third of my life living in a monastery. Sometimes they’re the best company you have!”
Bert will try to get used to his owl familiar, asking it if it has a name, and practicing letting it sleep on his shoulder, waking up and flying around the group, and scouting ahead as they travel, toggling between the owl's vision and his own. "It's disorienting, but really fun. Feels like I'm flying! Thank you, owl, for joining us." He turns to Zook. "I think her name is Meridian, or Merry, if that works for her. Can you ask her?!"
Once he realizes he's not the only one seeing the cloud tower, she blinks and nods at Zook and Mandy's responses. "Either we're all seeing things, or that's really there." He sends Merry up 100 feet to get a closer look, and if the owl is seeing what Bert's seeing, and if she doesn't see anything threatening, he'll toggle back, tell the group, and say, "well, stairs like that seem like an invitation to me. It might be more fun than camping for the night."
He takes a few steps forward. "Maybe we'll find out the deal with the stones. Shall we?"
You climb for 1000 feet, ending up standing on a cloud that feels as firm and safe as solid ground. Through the doors of the tower, you see a giant descend slowly through the air to the floor before coming forward to you.
The giant responds in giant "Oh, a small folk who knows the giant tongue. What a pleasant surprise. I am Zephyros. I love interacting with Small Folk such as yourselves."
Zook climbs the cloud stairs with a little more difficulty than his taller companion, but he relishes the challenge and follows them up to the top. He marvels at the fact that he’s now standing on top of a cloud that feels very much like solid ground.
Of all the introspective musings and ponderous ideas he’s had during throughout his life while peering up at the skies, this little gnome never imagined that one day, he’d actually climb up into it and stand on one of those whispy, white pillows.
He remains silent as he takes it all in, and then when he sees the giant emerge through the doors of the tower, Zook simply bows a simple greeting. Not being sure quite what else to do, he figures that a polite greeting is at least the right thing to do. He’s even more amazed when Bert begins speaking with the immense being.
Mandaway stared, his mind awash with conflicting emotions and not a little PTSD, " Greetings Sir.", Mandaway also said in Giant....though heavily Stone accented.
" I am Mandaway Gurumal, and these are my friends."
"What if I told you I was Bert? And that we just came from Nightstone? We heard a story about a flying castle dropping stones, hurting people, and then stealing the dark stone in the center of town for some reason," Bert says in common. "How do you know ou names, sir?"
Bert then steps back, alarming himself with his (polite) boldness, glancing around with sudden timidity.

" Of course! ", said Mandaway quickly, then looked around at the others wide eyed, realising that he may have spoken for the group accidentally.
" I'll leave my tools here to use to assist with repairs while I'm gone."

" Shall we go then? Can't be too far. "
" Make sure you don't let those Zhents back in!", he grinned at the dwarf.

Mandaway stared at the tower as the stairs descended, " Uh.....what sort of mushrooms were on that toast this morning?"
" I'm not the only one seeing this, right? Cos....I mean I did spend a day or so talking to a boulder one time."
