Being a little too focused on stomping the dead rat into oblivion, Zook takes his eye off of the goblin boss for a second, but even that was too long. He curses from the pain of Hark's blade sticking into his flesh, and also from the frustration of momentary letting his guard down. Fortunately, he's able to snap his concentration back and put up an adequate defense in order to avoid being stuck again.
Having sustained multiple wounds in this fight, Zook is bleeding pretty badly, and he's clearly beginning to tire. Looking around, he sees that both Hawk and Mandy are also quite bloodied as well. Knowing that one more hit might well prove fatal, he nonetheless decides to remain by their side rather than retreat to safer ground.
Switching tactics, he adopts a defensive stance and puts all of his mental and physical energy into dodging any further attacks, (Dodge Action) while at the same time, making it look that he's still fully engaged as a combatant.
Staying light on his feet, he holds his quarterstaff in front of him and begins doing a little dance while acting out his most absurd goblin impression. He chants "Bree-yark, bree-yark!" in his high pitched voice, all the while looking Hark right in the eyes and secretly hoping for two things: One, that Garl Glittergold will appreciate his blatant attempt at prankish humor in the middle of a fight and protect him from further injury, and two, that perhaps his actions will either distract, or draw Hark's attention so that his other three companions can finish him off.
Bert has to move down the tunnel to see Hark, you only have to move to roughly the position is of the cave they came out of. All rats are now dead (I think) and it is just Hark left. Hawk and Bert can take their turns
Hawk can tell his friends are in big trouble. He will draw his second short-sword, run down the tunnel towards Hark, hoping to catch him by surprise! He focuses all his senses on the leader (Bonus Action: Slayer’s Prey on Hark)
He will lash out with his main hand short-sword!
Attack: 9Damage: 10 (Slayer’s Prey damage: 3)
(Extra attack roll if advantage for attacking from behind: 21)
Bert listens for any other movement in the tunnels. Were there other goblins Bert saw in the chamber where they were eating the person? Was Hark the only one?
There were 2 other goblins but they were both killed. (actually the initial damage killed one of the goblins due to the goblin boss reaction but since I forgot that and Hark shouldn't be dead we will ignore that and let him be dead still)
No one else seems to be coming. It is quiet minus Snigbat making excited noises under the gag
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Bert walks over to his other companions, and tries to make sure everyone is okay. "That was pure chaos, but it seems we did what we meant to do. Is everyone okay?"
He sinks down on his heels and tries to look around for his arrows. He'll also search the dead goblins' bodies (Investigation: 24) for anything interesting. He looks at Snigbat, and pulls the gag off his mouth. "So that went well for you, if what you say is true. Why don't you tell me something interesting about the villagers? You really want us to believe you don't know where they are? What did they say when they came here? Were the ogres expecting them? How big are these caverns? We could be very helpful to your continued professional career and/or existence if you're helpful to us. I write excellent references. I'm also a mapmaker, Snigbat, so that's how I think. How about you scribble on this paper where the rest of these tunnels go?"
Later, Bert will suggest they scope out the next cavern where Hark was eating things with his now-dead friends and look around for anything interesting. (Investigation: 11)
After the fight, Zook drops his quarterstaff to the ground, reaches into his pack and pull out the bottle of dwarves whisky he found back at the inn in Nightstone. After taking a small swig off the bottle, he holds it up, offering a sip to anyone interested.
"Well, that was fun. Speared by an ogre, bitten by rats and stuck by a goblin, all while crawling around dark caves. I guess this is what you referred to as adventure, eh, Bert?"
"I don't feel so good. I need to sit down for a minute or two, catch my breath, and bind some of these nicks. Yes, Mandy, if you have some cloth to spare, I can certainly make use of a few scraps."
Bert replies to Zook, "Well it's more exciting than cartography. Dirtier and more dangerous, but definitely more exciting." He happily accepts the whisky bottle. "I think we can take some time here -- I don't hear anything. But I lucked out sneaking in the dark and you poor sods took all the hits from everyone, so I'm happy to risk myself and sneak around ahead to try to scout a bit, if you and Mandy and Hawk agree?"
"I think that's a fine idea, Bert!" You go do some more sneaking around in the dark and make sure there's nothing else out there that wants to kill us, while Mandy, Hawk and I relax for a bit, sip some more whisky and take a short rest so we can regain some of our strength."
"Also, we should check Hark and see if he has anything of value, like pretty gems or shiny coins, or anything that might help us find the villagers. And Snigbat over here obviously knows that we killed is big mean, green boss. Should we take his gag off and see if he has anything more he'd like to tell us?"
Snigbat answers "villagers were surprised to see us. We were surprised to see them but we had ogres. Snigbat not good at drawing, but don't go in tunnel opposite enterence, the blob will get you."
Searching the cave that Hark was in you find weapons from the villagers, 9 spears, 5 clubs, 2 daggers and 6 wooden shields. Off to the side is also a smaller cave with a human woman cowering in it. Hark has no treasure on him, the other goblins have a total of 11cp
"The Blob might will get us? Well, then I propose that we don't go into the tunnel opposite the entrance. That doesn't sound like the kind of fate that any of us would wish for."
"However, I'll admit, I am rather curious... what kind of blog are you talking about?"
"And you haven't really answered our question... where are the villagers now? Are they still somewhere in these caves?"
(advantage from pack tactics, they are within 5ft of you both, well one is, the other was)
Bert attacks the only target in his sight, the as predicted now dead rat.
Zook attacks the same rat twice, it was dead after the first hit but in his anger hit again (in other words the second missed)
Hark will walk up and attack Zook with his scimitar twice: Attack: 21 Damage: 6
TAttack: 7 Damage: 8
Mandaway and Hawk
After joining more my signature got out of hand so I am now a proud member of the extended signature club!! :)
So now that Hark is attacking Zook, who is over the rat Bert killed, Bert can now see Hark right? Can Bert move such that he can see Hark?
Mandaway swore as the rat bit him viciously, " Stop that!"
They were too close for the crossbow now so he pulled out the Pacifier and brought it down on the creature.
Attack: 19 Damage: 3

Dungeon Master – MelGon's Tales from the Yawning Portal
Hawk of the Night (Hawk) – Level 2 Tabaxi Ranger – Swift's Storm King's Thunder
Lavandula Angustia – Level 1 Tiefling Rogue – LMoP campaign, DM: novaskyr
Bert moves to where he can see Hark and draws his bow in the shadows and fires into the melee at the goblin.
Attack: 25 Damage: 5 plus 4 sneak attack damage
(second attack roll if advantage from being hidden, given Hark isn't actually aware of Bert as far as I know, but obv DM's call: 16)
(Flanking rules used I will say so Hawk hits, there would be advantage for Bert from hiding but missed anyway, just need to add up damage to him)
Well with the massive hit done by Bert before combat, Hark also dies. Combat is over

Bert listens for any other movement in the tunnels. Were there other goblins Bert saw in the chamber where they were eating the person? Was Hark the only one?
Mandaway looked shocked to be alive, " Whose hurt? I've got....well...some clothes I can tear up for bandages, but its better than nothing."
There were 2 other goblins but they were both killed. (actually the initial damage killed one of the goblins due to the goblin boss reaction but since I forgot that and Hark shouldn't be dead we will ignore that and let him be dead still)

" Sure, I can take a spell. Lets see if theres anything else here Sniggy wants to tell us about."
(Bert addressed some of this in #792, with an investigation roll or two too)
(will get an update soon. You left me with a lot to read)
