Ryner begins approaching the cart, snow falls from the tree, landing in a soft thump nearby. He gets closer to the brown blobs in the snow, even as Marius slows down the wagon. Realizing however, that the brown lumps are in the way of the road anyway, making passage impossible unless they were moved, or the cart risked going around, and based on how the snow went nearby, it looked like a deep embankment was on one side, while the thicker forest was on the other. Not impossible, but time consuming.
Salazar cowers in the cart, as Marius begins to check out the surroundings.... Though he can't tell from where, he hears some unnatural shuffling from the left side of the cart, in the tree's, but he cant quite place what it was. He hears some grumbling in an odd, gutteral language (Goblin) Ryner and Salazar notice this too, just as three arrows shoot out from the opposite side, where no sound had come from, two of which, aiming at Ryner, the other, at Salazar in the cart.
(3 goblins passed your passives by a long mile, the other 2 did not.)
Surprise round. G1, 2, 4.
Goblin 1 and two both shoot at Ryner - Attack: 20 Damage: 6 - Attack: 10 Damage: 8 the first shot, goign right between Ryners shoulderblades. The second one his left shoulder. Both sinking just barely inside, due to the crude make of the goblins arrows. Goblin 4 fires at Salazar, from a nearby tree - Attack: 23 Damage: 6 sinking deeply into Salazars hip, chipping the edge of the bone before finally stopping, and knocking the wind out of him momentarily.
Everyone may take a free turn, and then roll initiative.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Ryner, having just been hit by the two bolts, catches himself as he nearly falls over from both the force and pain. He grits his teeth, groaning from the intense pain, but pulls out his blade, quickly casting Hellish Rebuke on the Goblin that just hurt him.
(Reaction and need a DEX save from 1st goblin that shot him) Damage: 17
After which, regardless of the outcome of that spell, Ryner pulls out his blade and stares at the tree line, looking for his closest target.
((OOC Apologies... Forgot to mention, Ryner is now aware that the blobs in the road are the corpses of two horses, and the red/black around them is their frozen blood.))
(Not to make too light of the situation, but... this sums up Salazar's initial reaction pretty well, even if a hip shot)
By the grace of his god, Salazar maintains concentration just long enough to slow time to his perception. The pain remain and for the most part he could scarcely see past it(1 Hp remaining). "Okay, okay, okay.. Just need to -- Ah! No.. can't pull it like that." He mutters, wincing and groaning in between breathes as the thing sent waves of suffering through him with every breathe.
Just vaguely making out the ambusher that shot him, Salazar's eyes widen first with fear... then narrow in grim determination. "H-Hear... C-can you hear it, Goblin? The bells of fate?" He asks in goblin while pointing a shaky finger at it. A mote of light pops into being at the tip of his finger for only a brief moment before fading as bells toll in the mind of the goblin. Not wanting to wasting a second more out in the open, Salazar crawls his way carefully over the wagon edge, and then under it with tears budding in his eyes. Soon as he felt safe enough to do so, he carefully pulled out the arrow and tossed it aside before covering the wound.
Action: Salazar Casts Bells of Fate. Target(G5) must make a DC 14 Wis Save OR take 2 necrotic damage.
Not expecting the Goblins Marius is slow to react but he quickly surveys the situation and takes aim at the goblin near Ryner on the left side of the road from him. Attack10 Damage: 6. Perhaps the hours of driving and cold had a played a toll on his fingers as his shot is far inferior to what he knows he can accomplish but now isn't the time and he quickly drops the bow and moves to grab his Glaive so he can start making his way over to the nearest Goblin he can see.
Marius shoots at G3 and will try to get within 10 feet of G5. Though I am not 100% sure I believe dropping the bow would be a free action and the glaive could be seen as being part of his move action, as a bonus action, or taking up the move action.
Goblin 1 manages to dodge the majority of it, taking only half (rounded up) of the intended damage, the fire that sailed past him 99 setting the tree he was in ablaze, roaring to a hellish inferno almost immediately, the goblin takes another 2 fire damage as the tree ignites into flames.
On the other side Goblin 2 also takes 2 fire damage as a result of being in the same tree, ruining his stealth, and revealing his location for sure. On the other side of the road, Goblin 3 hears some odd bells, noises echoing through his mind - he's never experienced such a thing, and takes the full brunt of the attack, reeling in pain, but still standing, just barely.
Marius' arrow sails into the tree, and seems to pass on by, flying deeper into the forest.
(Yes, you may have your glaive on your next turn to attack with, and since it has a 10 foot reach, you can reach the goblin in the tree without having to make any checks, but it's AC will be higher due to half-cover.)
Rasec still has his free turn, as hellish rebuke was a reaction to the attack, as opposed to an actual action, then Rasec gets another turn as he's first in the initiative order.
Free Turn (thanks, wasn't 100% sure what you meant by free turn) Ryner, still a ways away from the goblins, will aim his free hand at the 1st one, firing of a Eldritch Blast at it, before moving to attack the second Goblin in a moment.
Attack: 13 Force Damage: 10
Round Turn Once he is close enough, he'll swing his blade at the 2nd Goblin, if the goblin is still in the tree, he'll attempt to high jump high enough for his blade to reach it.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(What the.. I had responded to this hours ago.. I was wondering why no one posted.... Gah, thanks DNDB, and sorry everyone else)
As Ryner charges towards the tree, he realizes the goblin would be out of reach, but using his momentum he attempts to jump onto it, and then kick off (Athl: 9) almost pirouetting as he spins in a slashing strike unfortunately the goblin saw him coming through the fire, and backed up just enough despite the raging inferno to make his attack miss - Just before Ryner lands deftly back on the ground, a few feet away.
Goblin 3 takes aim at Marius, firing its bow Attack: 7 Damage: 4 but marius manages to dodge out of the way, and the arrow sticks into the cart, the tip piercing the base, and poking out just in front of Salazars face, luckily, not hitting him. Goblin 5 says something insulting in goblinoid to his partner ,as he too takes a shot at Marius Attack: 11 Damage: 7 this time, as Marius dodges, he undercompensates, and the arrow sinks shallowly into his shoulder, causing minor pain, but nothing more. Goblin 4, having seen Salazar go below, attempts to shoot him as he scuttles underneath Attack: 21 Damage: 6 but the shot falls harmlessly into the dirt.
Goblin 2, still inside the inferno, panics, and jumps from the tree wildly, taking another 1 and nearly dying in the process, but it seems relieved to not be on fire anymore. Regaining its wits, it sees that things are going south fast, and Dashes to the right (mapwise) even as it Disengagees with it's nimble footwork, preventing AoO's. Shooting off into the forest.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Salazar hears more arrows fly and immediately curls as much into a ball. But another jolt of pain from the hip calls him to cry out instead. "Bad idea. This was a bad idea, Zanidar! Why did I let you talk me into this?" He complains to himself(?) before risking a glance out from underneath the cart. As another gets a bead on him and misses, Salazar crawls out enough to get sight on the shooter and jabs a finger in its direction, saying in goblin, "Y-You too! Go away, you big meanie!" More bells toll, but this time for Goblin4 this time around. Afterwards, he painfully pulls himself back further under the cart.
Action: Salazar Casts Bells of Fate. Target(G5) must make a DC 14 Wis Save OR take 7(if undamaged) or 11(if already damaged) necrotic damage.
(They really have a pension for going for the harder targets. Ranged attacks are at disadvantage on a prone. Plus, aren't they all in the trees? I get at least some seeing him crawl under there, but did he climb down as well to actual get an angle? Because part of the whole point of Salazar doing that was to get some heavy cover.)
Marius gets ready to swing his glaive but as he is swinging it the arrow catches in the shoulder and throwing his blow off and causing his glaive to thud mightily into the tree. Pulling his weapon back at ready he can't help but look back towards the wagon to see how the stuttering scholar was doing. As for calling out or roaring Marius instead remains silent as he fights focusing on trying to efficiently handle the enemies.

G4 save: 14
Goblin 4 heaves out some puke as parts of his body rot from the inside, bringing him closer to death himself, but still nto quite there. Some of the goblins are tougher than others (rolled HP).
Goblin 1 does much the same as Goblin 2, jumping out of the blazing tree before he takes anymore burning damage, also falling down and suffering 3 damage. As he gets up, he spots Salazar below the cart, and weighs his options... Salazar is just barely in range for the goblin to get to, and it snarls angrily, drawing it's scimitar before thrusting the blade at the cowering man who currently had his back, or side to the creature.
Attack: 23 Damage: 5
Despite the slight cover he got from the wheels (adding 2 to Salazars AC) the Goblin managed to prod him fairly hard in the side of the gut, sending the Genasi into the throes of death. (Roll a death save on your turn Salazar)

The flames slowly begin to spread from the tree the goblins were in before, igniting more trees.
Ryner ignores the flames, instead focusing on the Goblin that just attacked one of his comrades. Not giving much hesitation, he lunges at Goblin1 and vertically slashes at the small humanoid creature, with both hands on his blade.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Attack: 8 (seriously? I feel like the forum wants a tpk on our first encounter)
Marius' concern for the cowardly scholar only grows as he sees a goblin go for an attack on the one target who seemed to have practically no fight in him. Thankfully Ryner seems to spot the issue and moves to defend their weak companion but in his distraction Marius once more misses his target as he swings his glaive at the goblins remaining in the tree.
Ryner and Marius, both in panics over the fate of Salazar miss their intended attacks against the goblins. In both cases their weapons being parried away, dodged, or falling just short. The goblins began to grin wickedly, as they saw their odds improving exponentially. Goblin 3 and 4 both take shots at Marius
Attack: 7 Damage: 6 - Attack: 7 Damage: 3
But both shots go so wide that Marius doesn't even have to dodge. As Ryners attack misses Goblin 1, G1 counters with his own attack (Dynamic AOO) Attack: 8 Damage: 4 Missing Ryner, as Ryner himself parries (You now get a Dynamic AOO against G1 outside of your turn)
Goblin 5 takes a shot at Ryner as well Attack: 12 Damage: 6 missing his eye by a hairs breadth.
Salazar, slips closer to the void with a single failed death save.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Cursing Marius runs to where Salazar is, trying to avoid getting within range of the goblin engaged with Ryner, and attempts stabilize the downed scholar while hoping Ryner could hold off the enemies to give him enough time to do so. As he moves to do this he drops his glaive by his side to free his hands to administer any emergency measures he might needs to stabilize Salazar with the limited means available to him...
...thankfully this wasn't Marius' first time doing this and he is able to stabilize the downed comrade. With Salazar as well off as Marius can assure he then refocuses on the battle and works to pick up his weapon so that he can defend his downed comrade and stave off the ambushers.
(OOC: so if needed he will soldier crawl if needed, believe that reduces causes each square to count as 6ft for him, and will use his action to stabilize and then bonus action to pick weapon back up if allowed. should he have enough movement remaining he will stand up but I believe that requires 15ft)
Main turn: Ryner, having played parry with this goblin long enough, attempts to finish off the little sucker. As enjoyable as the fight was, he wasn't in the mood for games.
(If the goblin is still alive, he'll attack again, if not, he'll fire off a Eldritch Blast at G3) Sword Attack: 22 Damage: 10 OR Spell Attack: 14 Damage: 5
Goblin 1 parries and counters twice - Attack: 12 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll. - Attack: 24 Damage: 10
Missing with both, just before Ryner finally found an opening in the goblins armor, splitting him literally in half, blood, and viscera spilling everywhere, staining the snowy dirt.
Goblins 3, 4 and 5 seeing Marius attempting to stabilize Salazar, shout something at each other in goblin ew tsum dnuorrus eht namuh nopawe!
All of them jumping down, and charging at the barbarian, surrounding him. Goblin 3 and 4, attempt to grapple (with 3 helping 4)
Grapple check Vs Athletics or Acrobatics: 18
Regardless of pass or fail, Goblin 5 will make a strike, attempting to cripple Marius' thigh.
If grapple succeeds Attack: 11 Damage: 8
If grapple fails: Attack: 22 Damage: 6
If the attack hits, Marius will no longer be able to move more than 10 feet per turn until a long rest + DC 15 medicine check passes.
So Marius, do a 'grapple check to determine if you're grappled or not, then take or dont take the appropriate damage. if the attack missed.. DAOO, then your turn.

So... Ryner. You get in this order. Two DAoO's, followed by your turn actions.
Initiative order: Rasec - 19, goblin 3 - 19, Goblin 5 - 16, Goblin 4 - 11, Salazar - 9 Marius - 5 Goblin 1 - 4
Occassional Dungeon Master.
Dynamic AoOs:
Attack: 10 Damage: 14
Attack: 7 Damage: 7
Main turn:
Ryner, having played parry with this goblin long enough, attempts to finish off the little sucker. As enjoyable as the fight was, he wasn't in the mood for games.
(If the goblin is still alive, he'll attack again, if not, he'll fire off a Eldritch Blast at G3)
Sword Attack: 22 Damage: 10
OR
Spell Attack: 14 Damage: 5
Initiative order: Rasec - 19, goblin 3 - 19, Goblin 5 - 16, Goblin 4 - 11, Salazar - 9 Marius - 5 Goblin 1 - 4
